A group of Johnson admirers set 20
petitions In' circulation at noon yes
terday urging Hiram W. Johnson to
bolt the republican ticket nominated
nt Chicago and head a new party. If
Senator Johnson Issues a statement
that he will abide by the decision of
the convention, the movement,
launched in Portland and which is in
sympathy with a similar movement
started in New York, will automatic
ally cease.
Those who have banded themselves
together to tempt the Californian to
repudiate the platform and nominees
of the repubiican party are in nowise
connected with the official JohTison
organization which had charge of his
campaign in Oregon during the recent
primaries. It is an entirely volunteer
organization and working independ
ently of the Johnson machine.
W. r. Adams Assists Move.
W. T. Adams, 1037 Chamber of Com
merce building, is the only one in the
group whose identity has been re
vealed. Mr. Adams said that he was
not at liberty to make, public the
names of his associates in this im
promptu movement, at .least for the
present.
The urge for Senator Johnson to
bolt is based on the manner and
method in which Johnson was elim
inated at the republican convention.
During the primary contest in Ore
gon a rumor spread that if Senator
Johnson was not nominated at Chi
cago he would bolt. To set these re
ports at rest. Sanfield MacDonald,
Oregon manager for Johnson, tele
graphed for a statement. A personal
message from Senator Johnson to Mr.
MacDonald followed and with the re
quest that it receive publicity.
Stand With Party Avowed.
In this message Senator Johnson
avowed his intention of abiding by
the decision of the republican con
vention. Since the convention, how
ever. Senator Johnson has refused to
make any statement regarding the
platform or the nominees, and this
has led to the belief that he may con
template bolting. The action of Mr.
Adams and his associates, is calculat
ed to fan the fires of discontent. If
ruch exist in the mind of the Califor
nian.
"Since the nominations at Chicago,'
explained Mr. Adams, who was Inter
ested in local politics about 15 or 20
years ago," a number of people have
expressed their dissatisfaction with
the treatment accorded Senator John
son. Wo believe that he did -not re
ceive a square deal and that he was
beaten out of the nomination by polit
ical trickery. We are satisfied that
he is the popular choice for presi
dent. IVerr lark Petitions Reported.
"Tuesday morning a flash came
over a stock wire in Portland saying
that petitions had been started in New
York asking Johnson to head a third
party, and that 100,000 names had
been secured. We had a conference at
noon and discussed the situation. It
was believed that If the people of the
east were willing to have Johnson
bolt, then the people of the extreme
west, the people of Johnson's terri
tory, should be equally interested. So
we took the Initiative to put out peti
tions asking him to head a third
party. Twenty petitions were started
out.
"It should be distinctly understood
that none of us were in any manner
connected with the Johnson organiza
tion during the primary contest in
Oregon.
Johnson Manager Nat Consulted.
"We haven't consulted the Johnson
managers and do not even know
where they are, nor whether they
lavor Senator Johnson bolting. It is
our own enterprise and it will be car
ried on until Senator Johnson either
announces he will abide by .the Chi
cago convention or will head a new
movement."
J. A. Miller is the only individual in
rortland at present who was identi
fied with the Johnson headquarters,
and he said that he did not know Mr
Adams and that the proposed move
ment for a bolt was news to him. Mr.
MacDonald and Thomas Mannix of the
Johnson organization have not re
turned from Chicago.

RECKLESS DRIVER JAILED
Kaady Said to Have Had Trouble
on Previous Occasions.
A. Kaady. arrested on a charge of
speeding down Belmont street at 30
miles an hour, was fined 125 and sent
to jail for 12 hours by Judge R,oss
man yesterday. Kaady was stated to
have been in trouble on two previous
occasions on charges of violating the
traffic law.
Allen Walsch. who was arrested for
reckless driving at Union avenue and
Beectf street by Lieutenant Ervin. was
fined $25. According to the lieuten
ant, Walsch had a near collision at
that intersection with another ma
chine. Other fines levied included: Sidney
Neie. speeding, 10; Fred Duine,
speeding, $10; P. Cassmiller, violating
the traffic law, $2.50; Joe Launtzer,
bright lights, Jo; Henry Brouwer.

lights, $5; M. Ribock, auto, no lights,
$2.50; A. W. Bartlett, speeding, $10;

Fire Chief Scouts Rumor of In
tended Resignation.

Rumors circulated at the city hall
that be contemplated resigning and
accepting a life pension were denied
yesterday by Fire Chief Dowell. Com
missioner Bigelow, head of the fire
bureau, said that no word of Dowell's
intended retirement had come to him.
Despite this, reports that the chief in
tended to retire about July 1 were
heard'at the city hall yesterday.
"I can't understand," said the chief,
"how the rumor started. Possibly it
is due to a statement I made to
friends last February that when the
time came I might possibly accept a
pension and retire. However, my
plans have changed and 1 do not In
tend to resign or retire. I would reel
'lost' out of the department after my
years iu the harness."
Local Engineers Organize.
Colonel J. R. Slattery yesterday was
chosen as temporary chairman of an
organization of Portland engineers,
formerly in military service in the en
gineering corps. Application will be
made for a charter as a chapter of the
Society of American Military Engi
neers. The initial meeting was held

Grand Lodge of Masons Opens Its
Annual Session Trip to For
est Grove Planned.
Mrs. Ida Umback of Lakeview yes
terday was elected worthy grand ma
tron of the grand chapter of Oregon
of the Order of Eastern Star. Mrs.
Umback had no ODOOSition. She has
served' in all the chairs in the order
except the one to which she was
elected yesterday.
The session yesterday, the second
of the 31st annual convention, was
one of the most enthusiastic in the
history of the organization in this
state. Registration shows 550 mem
bers of the order in attendance of
which 320 are accredited delegates
representing 106 chapters in the state,
In addition to the election of Worthy
Grand Matron Umback, other officers
elected yesterday, were: Worthy grand
patron. Leslie S. Parker. Portland;
associate grand matron. Mrs. Minnie
Letson, Ontario; associate grand pa
tron. Frank J. Metier, Albany; grand
secretary. Miss Nellie McKinley, Port
land: grand treasurer, Mrs. Mary E.
Johnson, Pendleton; grand conductress.
Mrs. Therese Castner, Hood River,;
associate grand conductress, Stella K.

Local Chapters Praised.
Worthy matrons of Portland chap
ters are winning the praise of dele
gates from out-of-town because of
the entertainment accorded them. The
Eastern Star chapters are taking an
active interest in the campaign being
waged for funds for the erection of
the Masonic home at Forest Grove, re
ports showing that within the past
year a total of $3040.83 has been
raised for this fund by chapters
throughout the state.
Oregon has 121 chapters of the Or
der of Eastern Star, with a total mem
bership of 14,471, showing a net gain
of l44o members in the last l -
months.
This afternoon delegates in attend
ance at the grand chapter will join
the delegates attending the grand
lodge of the Ancient Free and Ac
cepted Masons in the excursion to
Forest Grove, where the corner stone
of tha, first unit of the Masonic home
will be laid.
Masons Proarramme Changed.
The grand lodge of Masons will
open Its 70th annual communication
with Judge Earl C. Bronaugh, grand
master, presiding. The programme
has been revised somewhat, it being
planned to adjourn at noon today
and reconvene at Forest Grove on the
site of the new Masonic home.
Tonight and Thursday night the
grand lodge will hold special schools
of instruction In connecfjton with the
new ritual for the benefit of officers
of subordinate lodges.
A special feature in the Masonic
programme is the opening of work
by Sunnyside chapter, (Royal Arch
Masons, at the Sunnyside temple.
.East Thirty-ninth street and Haw
thorne avenue. This chapter obtained
a charter from the grand chapter of
Royal Arch Masons Monday.
The closing session of the grand
chapter of the Eastern Star 'will be
held tomorrow. All Masonic sessions
are being held in the Pythian temple,
formerly the Masonic temple, at West
Park and Yamhill streets.

Club to Entertain Thousands.
VANCOUVER, "Wash.. June 15.
Every Shriner in Clarke 'county is
urged to be present at an important
meeting of the Vancouver-Shrine club
tomorrow at 7:30 o'clock in St. Luke's
hall. The Shrine club has the task of
entertaining several thousand visit
ing Shriners here June 22, when Mrs.
Ellis Lewis Garretson, wife of the
deputy imperial potentate of the
Shrine, acts as sponsor for the An
i tinous. at the shipyard of the G. M.
Standifer Construction corporation
The business meeting of the club will
be held first and following this the
patrol, in their new uniforms, will
drill.
Prune Growers Elect Officers.
VANCOUVER, Wash.. '"June 15.
(Special.) The Washington Growers
Packing association, composed of
most of the prune growers of Clarke
county, met today to dispose of bust
ness in connection with the building
of a packing plant to handle this
year's crop, which now gives every
indication of being the largest in the
history of prune growing in this
county. L. F. Russell of Washougal
was re-elected president; Fred W.
Brooker of Fruit Valley, vice-president,
and Henry Crass of Vancouver,
pecreta ry.
Forgery, Xon-Support and Robbery
Charges Against Others Dropped.
AH Plead Guilty.
A quartet of youthful offenders, all
of whom pleaded guilty to various
charges, was arraigned yesterday
before Presiding Judge McCourt.
William Barrow, eelf-conf essed thief
of groceries from at least half a
dozen small stores, was the only one
not to receive a parole. He was sen
tenced to a year in the penitentiary
on each of 'two indictments.
Andres Aguirrl. an 18 -year -old
youth from the Mexican border, was
paroled from a year's .sentence in the
penitentiary on condition that he re
pay about $300, the value of furs he
had stolen. With several other men
he had taken 35 pieces, all but six
of which had been returned.
Forgery of seven checks, amount
ing to about $400 in Portland and
$200 in Seattle, nearly sent Gordon
Nelson to Salem, but his mother's
request that he be placed under strict
parole was granted. The sentence
was three years in the penitentiary.
Nelson, a boy of 18, came here from
Coos Bay and ran out of money for
the entertainment of girl friends and
the maintenance of bachelor quar
ters. Edward Jackson, 22, received the
choice of a year in Jail or payment
of $100 at once to his wife, $50 for
the next 30 days and $30 monthly
thereafter. He was charged with
non-support. Jackson had gone to
Washington to work in a mill after
telling his wife he intended to give
another girl the money he earned.
Nature Conserves Gasoline.
WHITE SALMON, Wash., June 15.
(Special.) Nature is conserving the
supply of gasoline throughout the
mid-Columbia section, over week
ends. Copious rains have not only
prevented joy riding but have been
of tremendous benefit to horticultural
and agricultural crops, as well as to
the strawberry harvest now on strong.
Such precipitation in June has not
been enjoyed for several years.
. Aberdeen Has New Bakery.
ABERDEEN, Wash., June 16.
(Special.) The Federal bakery sys
tem has added Aberdeen to its chain
of 800-odd bakeries throughout the
county.
