PARAISO NOW IN POSITION Company Starts Cutting Tios to De liver in Great Britain When Tonnage Secured. Chartering of the 6teamer Egeria for Australia and the Japanese steam er Kongosan Maru for north China ports, both with full cargoes of lum ber, was announced yesterday. The Kongosan Maru, substituted by Mitsui & Co. for the steamer Horaisan' Maru which loaded on Puget sound Instead of coming to Portland, will Bo on berth here between July 1 and July 15. The Pacific Export Lumber company will. supply her full cargo. The steamer Eeeria, completed from a shipping board hull by H. E. Pen nell and a group of associates, is now expected to be ready to start loading about August 1. She has been char tered by J. J. Moore to carry lumber from Portland to Sydney. Australia, at the prevailing rate of J35 per 1000 feet, and has been fixed, also, with a return cargo of coal from Newcastle to Honolulu. The outward cargo of lumber is to be supplied by the Doug las I'ir Exploitation & Export com pany. Strainer Went Ivan Loading:. Besides a full cargo on the Kon gosan Maru, the Pacific Export Lum ber company is supplying all the lum ber for the steamer West Ivan of the Waterhouse fleet, which is loading at the Clark-Wilson mill, and the steam er Olen of the Admiral line, which is finishing at the North Pacific Lum ber company's mill. The- Douglas Fir Exploitation & Export company is supplying cargoes for the steamers Paraiso and. Van couver a'ul ;he schooner Oregon Pine, all of wliic; are now loading in the locrl harbcr. The Taraiso, operated hv W. It. Giace & Co.. moved into yostti m last ninht at the Portland liUrnbiT company's mill, to start load ing for the west coast of South America. The Vancouver Maru shift ed yesterday from municipal terminal No. 4, where she has loaded steel, to the West Oregon Lumber company's mill to start loading lumber for north China ports. This lumber, amounting to l.r.00.000 feet, has been sold in China by A. O. Anderson & Co. Tonnage Sought for Tics. Future orders on the books of the Douglas Fir company are a full car for the schooler Oregon Fir, which will start leading for Australia about June 21, a full cargo for the barken tiene Kate G. Pedersen, expected to be ready in two or three weeks, and 500.000 feet on the Admiral liner Coaxet, due here Saturday from the orien t. This company has also started cut ting 15.000,000 feet of railroad ties ii the Columbia river. These were sold in a single order for delivery in the United Kingdom, but no tonnage has a?, yet been fixed for its movement SCHOONBH AVILIj UK BLOWN 11' JJjiiumilc to Be Used by Wrecking Company lo Salvage Metal. ABERDEEN. Wash., June 9. (Spe cial.) With the flow of high tide on the Copalis beach June 15, the last chapter in the tragic history of the schooner Janet Carruthers will be written. On that date the hull of the schooner, wrecked on the beach over a year ago, will be blown to pieces by a heavy charge of dynamite. The dynamiting will be done by the West ern Junk and Wrecking company, purchasers of .the vessel, who will salvage the metal fittings and bolts from her timbers. D. B. Drifus, manager of the wreck ing company, has just returned from Seattle, where he purchased two 12 imh centrifugal pumps, which will be used in removing the sand from the hold, so that the dynamite may be planted deeply. It is expected that practically all the metal can be saved. The salvagers expect to get 100 tons of bolt fittings from the fittings from the hold. The night tide of June 15 will reach the 10-foot mark, the highest point until next December. , The Mexico Maru of the Osaka Shosen Ralsha line U due at Victoria, B, C, to morrow noon and should arrive In Tacoraa about Monday. She will load a central cargo for the orient at the Milwaukee docks. COOS BAT, Or., June !. (Special.' The steamship City of Topeka arrived thin afternoon from Kan Francisco and brought passengers and freight. She will not leave for Portland until tomorrow morning at o'clock. The new steam schooner Ryder Hanify, constructed at the Kruse Banks ship yard, had her trial trip this afternoon and remained in the lower bay until after w After being in port for several days ths gasoline schooner Tramp sailed for Rogue river with general freight at 5:30 o'clock this morning. The steam schooner Martha Buehner ar rived from San Francisco at 1:50 this aft ernoon and Is taking on a lumber cargo at the Buehner mill. The C. A. Smith was laden with a lum ber cargo of l,2r0,000 feet when she sailed for Bay Point this afternoon at 4:00. The government dredge Oregon Is being slightly overhauled, preparatory to going to the Coquille river to dredge. ASTORIA, Or., June 9. (Special.) The steamer West Comak, In ballast from San Francisco, arrived in the river at P. M. hist night and proceeded to Portland for c s rgo. The Standard Oil tanker Captain A. F. Lucas and barge 03 arrived In the river this morning with gasoline and fuel oil jor foniana. The Associated Oil steamer W. F. Herrln, with a cargo of oil. arrived here at 6 A. M. today and proceeded tin river to discharge. The steam schooner Tiverton arrived this morning in ballast from California and will take on ship timbers here for the south. For March, 1920, the net operating income of the roads was $10,206,576, compared with $9,306,592 for March, 1919. Operating revenues for March were $450,470,217, against $368,096,045 for March. 1919. Estimated items not included in the partial summary may increase the net operating income In the final sum mary, the commission stated, if the completed responses of the carriers warrant their inclusion. The steamer Princ Rupert has been chartered to bring them to Puget sound. SAN FRANCISCO, June S. (Special.) I Preparatory to his departure for Wash ington tomorrow. Captain Irving L. Evans, director of recruiting service for the United States shipping board, who has been here for the patt 10 days, made the following announcement today: There will be a complete change in the method of training apprentices for the merchant marine to be initiated when the present, training ship Iris Is disposed of by tlie sales division oi the shipping board and one of the 8S00 deadweight ton cargo vessels Is substituted. The plan is to have the vessel fitted to carry 150 apprentices and the vessel will probably be placed on the triangular run between this coast. The steamer Rlchooncal, Captain Zuvlc, left here today to load oil at San Luis lo. Honolulu, where the fuel Is badly needed for shipping. Project on- Yaquina Bay Estimated to Cost $500,000. NEWPORT. Or., June 9. (Special.) Construction work on the north Jetty of Yaquina bay will commence soon, according to a telegram from Senator Chamberlain received today by B. F. Jones, secretary of the New port port commission. The message states that the estimated cost of the Jetty Is $500,000. The residents or lart, near tne mouth of the Siletz river, will- soon have a dock constructed for their re let by the port of Newport, of which that locality is a part. Mr. Jones, at a meeting held by the commission to day, made a motion that an engineer he annointed to draw up plans ana specifications at once instead ot waiting until Port engineer vvrigm had time to take up the work. The steamer Diablo, represented at Ta coma by the Pacific Steamship company, is due here Kriday from Afrira with about 000 tons of ore. It is understood that the steamer will load general freight for the east coast and Europe. Representatives of the Pacific Steam ship company dock here became con fused yesterday and had the Queen In in stead of the Dewey from San Francisco. The newer sailed this morning after load ing for California ports. Captain Lyon, of the Haxtum, was around the morning fanning with local marine men and. recalling early days of the American-Hawaiian line for which company he sailed as chief officer. Cap tain Tapley, Captain Green and Captain Nichols all came in for their share of reminiscences. The Haxtum will sail from here Friday, it appears. Captain Walter Mllnor who took the Fastern Cros from here to the Atlantic coast W'lll make the same voyage with the Eastern Tempest, which is to be op erated by the Grace company. Captain Mtinor has earned the title of "transconti nental mariner." Ninety-nine deep-sea vessels with a totat tonnage of 149.1.V2 tons visited the port of Tacoma during the month of Mav aoeordlng to the monthly report of W. G. Rowland, harbor master. To load a part cargo of lumber for Brazilian ports, the Pallas, built at the Todd Drydock Construction corporation sailed for Everett yesterday. The Pallas and the Rotarlan will be operated by fiwavne Hoyt or San Francisco on newly established route between the sound, J 7:35 P. M The steamer West Hartland of th Admiral line, which recently arrived on Puget sound with rubber from Singapore, is not expected to be here before tner d- elnr.lng of next week to load her nxt outward cargo of flour for Europe. Her arrival on the sound completes the West Hartland's second voyage to the orient and it is customary to drydock the ships for Inspection every other trip. It is probable also that minor repairs will have to be made before she comes bere. The sttarner Eastern Glen, loading a cargo of flourvfor Europe, is expected to be ready for sea at noon Friday. The steam schooners Willamette and Multnomah of the McCormick line sailed from St. Helens yesterday afternoon with freight and passengers tur San Francisco and San Pedro. The schoorer William H. Smith move down from the Inman-Poulsen mill yes terday to the American Can company's dock to finish preparations for sea and to make room at the mill for the steam er Delisle, which moved up from the Pa cifc Marine Iron works to load for ths wet coast. The oil tankers William F. Herrln and Captain A. F. Lucas, the latter towing barge No. v-i. arrived in tne Columbia river yesterday. The barge is discharg ing at Astoria. The Herrln and Lucas brought their cargoes of fuel oil to Port land. The tanaer uieum was auc on toe mouth of the river last night. Olen TTiiabie to Get Fuel Here Because her operators have been unable to obtain fuel oil for her here, the steamer Olen of the Admiral line may have to go to Puget sound, tor fuel before proceeding to the orient it was announced yesterday. The Olen finished loading lumber for China last night and was expected to sail today. When the steamer Paw let of the same fleet was ready to go to the orient last week and had an insufficient supply, of fuel oil. she was supplied from the tanks of the Olen In expectation that this vessel would be restocked by the oil com panies. The oil companies, however, refused yesterday to replenish the Olen's nearly empty tanks. Schooner to Sail Saturday. - The new double-ended steam schoon er Everett, juat completed by the St. Helens Shipbuilding company, will leave Saturday afternoon for Everett, Wash., the city for which she was named, to load her first cargo of lum ber for California, it was announced yesterday by the Charles R. .McCor mick Co., owners and operators of the vessel. The voyage from Portland to Everett will serve as a trial trip, and a large number of guests have been Invited to attend. The fc.vereit is now at the plant of the Willamette Iron & Steel works, where the last of her machinery is being installed. Anotlier Flour Carrier Comes. The fleet of flour carriers ir port was increased to four yesterday by the arrival of the steamer west cam ak. which booked at th Kerr-liif ford Albina dock at 7 A. M. 'tne otners are the steamers Eastern Glen at Montgomery dock, Higho at the Co- umbia dock and West El L'ajon ai municipal terminal No. 1. Specifica tions have been issued and bids asked by the repair and construction, divi sion of the fleet corporation for re pairs to the West El Cajon and she is expected to be aeiayea Beverai aays before starting loading. Tacoma to Have Home for Sailors. TACOMA, Wash., June 9. (Special.) Sailors who come ashore in Tacoma in the near, future will have a home of their own to serve their needs, give them lodging, care for their effects while at sea and do for them what Community Service houses did for the soldiers during the war. The Sea men's Church Institute of America is founding the Tacoma branch. Rev. Frederic W. Keator of the Episcopal church will be in charge. Brecken ridge Long, third assistant secretary of state, has resigned and his resig nation has been accepted by Presiden Wilson. Mr. Long: retires, to make the rac for the nomination for United States senator in his home state, Missouri, and has left for St. Louis to take per sonal charge of his campaign. Officials generally professed to have no information as to Mr. Long's successor. Mr. Long entered the state depart ment as third assistant secretary in January, 1917. The principal work accredited to him by his assistants was the recent negotiation of a consortium- composed of the United States, Great Britain, France and Japan to provide loans to China. He was entrusted" especially with far eastern affairs and represented the department in accompanying the various official missions visiting this country during and since the war. The board took the retfisnaf ion under con sideration- The present school fight In Eugene has centered around Mr. Rutherford Most of the grade teachers signed an agreement several months ago not to teach in the local schools if Mr Rutherford were retained, but the board engaged him for another year. The school fight resulted in a recall election against E. R. Bryson, mem ber of the board, which will take place June 21. Mr. Rutherford came here five years ago from the McMinnville schools.
