The 51st annual commencement of
Oregon Agricultural college was held
in the men's gymnasium this morning"
when 264 men and women received
degrees. B. K. Irvine, regent of the
college, delivered the address of the
day. He emphasized the need of the
home in the development of the na
tion to the greatest and best. Mrs.
Lelia Gordon baling of Portland sang
several groups of songs, accompanied
by Ella Connell Jesse of Portland.
The senior honor students, number
ing 2L were presented by President
AV. J. Kerr. The Clara H. Waldo
prizes for women and the A. J. John
son prizes for men were other honors
conferred.
The Joseph II. Albert prize for
.seniors was presented to Robert M.
Wait of Bay City, who also received
senior honors in agriculture and the
A. J. Johnson prize for men. Five of
the students graduated received their
master of science degrees, two of
them being women. Three women re
ceived degrees in agriculture, one of
them being a master's degree. Of the
264 graduates. 106 were women.

Reports that have ffone out from
Salem that it would not be surprising
f Governor Olcott requested the
resignation ot Robert A. Booth or
Simon Benson, or possibly both, in
the interest ot harmony among the
inembess of the state highway com
mission, are without foundation. This
was made plain today by Governor
Olcott. who said he had not given the
minor personal differences of Mr.
Benson and Mr. Booth any thought.
Reports of friction between Mr.
Booth and Mr. Benson J-t a recent
meeting of the highway commission
were brought to the capital by James
S Stewart, ex-representative from
Wheeler county and now a resident of
Corvallis.
Since it was rumored that the two
men had clashed and that the removal
of one of the men would not be a sur
prise to friends of the governor, sev
eral applications for the office are
said to have reached Salem.

Winfield Dryden of Corvallis won
the industrial news writing contest
for the spring term with a total of
1347.5 column inches of published
matter. Claude P. Palmer, of Port-!
land was his nearest competitor with
total of 1050 inches. Both served
as correspondents for Portland papers
part of the term. Palmer was mili
tary editor of the Barometer during
the entire year.
William Van Allen of Redmond
won contest B which was for those
who had not won any contest and
were taking practice industrial news
writing. E. Glyde Cone of Corvallis
received second place. Hazel Kelsey
of Portland received first place in
contest C which is restricted to those
taking class work only. Laurie Lind
of Portland was a close second with
only a few inches less.

Robbers Overlook $100 In Cur
rency on One Victim.
ABERDEEN, Wash., June 8. (Spe
cial.) A series of five street hold
ups took place between 9 o'clock last
night and midnight. 1 hose roDDea
woro John Karl, an employe of a
tailor shop; Henry Hannah, owner of
a cranberry farm near Grayland, who
broke away from the robbers and
escaped: Harry Wootan, of 332 West
First street; J. Boston, address unre
ported; and Fred Davidson, of Mon
tesano.
Kari was held up on the O.-W. K.
& N. bridge shortly before 10 o'clock.
Wootan was held up on the corner of
First and L streets at 10:45 o'clock
and Boston between E and Market
streets shortly before 12 o'clock.
Wootan lost $71 in bills and coins and
a gold watch and chain. Boston lost
$45. Kari's loss amounted to only a
few cents. Hannah had $400 In bills
on his person which robbers failed to
get. Both robbers were armed and
masked.

Tillamook county to succeed T. B.
Handley. who resigned recently to
accept an appointment as state cor
poration commissioner. Mr. Claussen

granted Willamette university, the

state to be admitted into the national
organization. Theta Alpha Phi Is one
