FOR SECRETARY OF STATE
Good Reasons for Supporting Him
1 One dollar out of every $3 of state taxes is paid
by Multnomah County. Select Mr. Schulderman
of Multnomah so this county will have a direct
voice in handling the state money.
2 The Secretary of State is a member of the State
Board of Control. If Mr. Schulderman is elected
there is no danger of it being a one-man board.
3 Business judgment and an understanding of the
value of a dollar are needed for the Board of Con
trol. Mr. Schulderman's record as Corporation
Commissioner proves he has these qualifications.
4 Executive ability is required to produce efficiency
of service in the clerical routine. Mr. Schulder-
man's conduct of his present office demonstrates
that he is capable in this line.
5 Proof of Mr. Schulderman's effective economy is
shown by the fact that his office was operated in
1919 for practically the same expense as before
the war. There is scarcely another, if any, office
in the United States which can point to such a
remarkable condition.

A As Corporation Commissioner, appointed by the .
late Governor James Withycombe, he has kept
Oregon free from swindling stock salesmen and
has protected the widows and other small in
vestors from stock sharks.
B "World's Work" (issue of March, 1919), in a sur
vey of one thousand shady stock-selling concerns
which fleeced the people of millions of dollars,
shows that Oregon, thanks to the alertness of Mr.
Schulderman, has the cleanest record of any state
in the union. Not one of these thousand pirates
operated in Oregon.
C Notwithstanding that extravagance has run riot
throughout the nation, adding heavily to the high
cost of living, Mr. Schulderman has held down
the operating costs of his department and in
creased its revenues 100 per cent in 1919 over
1918.
D He has independent judgment and initiative; he
knows the state and its institutions.

Henry Schulderman is the man behind the law.
He has served the people well, painstakingly, care
fully, investigating every applicant as judiciously as
though he were looking after his personal invest
ments. Not once has a "wildcat" scheme evaded his
edicts or deceived his examiners. No legitimate cor
poration has complained of his findings. Without in
the least presuming to slight other candidates, we
believe Mr. Schulderman is best qualified for the of
fice by education, temperament and experience. And
we sincerely hope the business men of Oregon will
display their appreciation of his handling of the
corporation office by elevating him to the higher

He is the only official in Oregon and doubtless in
the United States who operated his department last
year for about the same cost as he did in 1916. That
fact is of real interest to taxpayers. This feature of
Mi. Schulderman's record is an outstanding one and
will doubtless cause every voter to ask himself the
question: "Is this not the man we want as secretary
of state, the one office in Oregon that must not have
a rubber-stamp official?" Klamath Falls Herald.
Schulderman is a Multnomah county man, well
known there, and has a good chance to take in the
Multnomah county vote, which will decide the issue.

They Praise His Fitness
For five years he has conducted the office of Cor
poration Commissioner in a manner to incur the en
mity of wildcatters and win the respect of sub
stantial business men. Part of the duty of that of
fice is to administer the Blue Sky law, which was
enacted to protect innocent investors from the rav
ages of shark stock salesmen. To have handled its
administration in a manner that was an insuperable
obstacle to the fly-by-night promoter while not im
posing obstructions in the road of legitimate financ
ing has required caution and business judgment as
well as firmness and actuarial ability. Oregon Voter.
Henry J. Schulderman, present Corporation Com
missioner, is pre-eminently qualified for Secretary
of State, and his record as Commissioner is a guar
antee that if elected the affairs of the office will be
administered honestly, economically and efficiently.
From the viewpoint of economy as well as efficiency
his administration is without precedent in the state.
Mr. Schulderman is equipped to perform each and all
of the duties connected with the office of Secretary
of State and he is certainly entitled to the promotion.
He was born in Oregon and lived here all his life

No, person acquainted with Mr. Schulder
man's official or private career questions his
fitness for the exacting duties of Secretary
of State. He has had a lifetime of practical
business experience and as Corporation Com
missioner has the technical knowledge to aid
in conducting the greatest corporation in
Oregon, which is the state government itself.
It is no job for an office boy.
No political machine is backing Mr. Schul
derman. He is not indorsed by the little slate
makers, nor is he capitalizing fraternal
orders. His candidacy is presented on the
grounds of his ability to perform the functions
of a real Secretary of State.
Mr. Schulderman is a native Oregonian,
whose Americanism is shown by his record,
whose patriotism has prevented owners of
Liberty Bonds from being trapped by trick
sters in disposing of these government securi
ties for worthless schemes, as has happened
in other states.
The presidential primaries have overshad
owed all other contests. That is why this
large advertising space is bought to remind
voters that they are called on to select a
Secretary of State, the most important and
responsible state office to be voted on this
year.
The press commends the qualifications of
Mr. Schulderman. His nomination has been
predicted in newspapers. Make assurance
doubly sure by voting for him, No. 59 on the
Republican ballot.
Don't throw away your vote. If you, as
taxpayers, want economy, business judgment
and good service, then
