Reno was out-Renoed yesterday tnorning In municipal court when Judge Rossman instituted an Innova tion by "divorcing" an unmarried couple. The case came before the Judge as an assault and .battery- hearing against Carl Lacy; proprietor of a soft drink establishment at 54 Second treet. The complainant was Mrs. Neva Wlckham, pretty proprietress of a barber shop on Madison street near Second. The two admitted that they had been "keeping company" for pome time but that the path of love had often been made thorny by lovers' quarrels, culminating in a "battle royal" Tuesday, which took place where the two have adjoining apart ments at 300 Jefferson street. Each accused the other of taking the ini tiative in the "beating up." which they averred occurred at that time, and the quarrel broke out afresh be fore the judge. QuarrellnB Starts Too Soon. "Here you are not yet married and you are fighting like cats and dogs." declared Municipal Judge Rossman when he had a chance to get in a word. "What you need is a separation before this goes any further." The judge announced that in order to make certain that Lacy would Btay away from the girl he would keep the $100 bail which he had up until such a time as the court con sidered the separation had proved to be an accomplished fact. In case Lacy did not leave the girl alone the Judge announced that his bail would be forfeited and additional proceed ings would be started against him which might land him in jail. The girl was also admonished to leave Lacy alone. "That big boob wants to get you under his control and for no good rea son," declared Judge Rossman. "I am giving you a chance to be free. But If you go back to him in spite of it all, you will get no further help from the authorities." Just what occurred during the alleged "mix up" Tuesday was diffi cult to determine from the varied accounts given by the two parties to the affair, in court. Each declared that the other "started it." Lacjt. declared that the girl was all right but that she had a hot temper and that she had broken three um brellas on him in the past. "And I'm always the goat because I have to buy a new umbrella," he aid. "She has been beating you up that way and yet you always went back to her again?" dem nded the Judge. I.acy Doean't llnd".buse. "Tee," was the reply, "we always made up again. I don't mind a little abuse. J Just, got ouV of the army not long ago." Lacy declared that the girl ' used him for a bouncer. He said he had moved to the apartment adjoining her (, a man had been following her around and she wanted his protec tion. "Then'Monday when she was sick I got her breakfast, cleaned up her room and rubbed medicine on her t chest." he continued. "And this is what 1 got for it," he declared turning to her. "I am ar rested the next day. "I am a different caliber of man than you are accustomed to dealing with. You're a lady barber and you are accustomed to working" with easy marks." "Judge, everything he said is a dirty lie," declared the woman in the case. She also declared that Lacy had taken her away from her former hus band. "He made me run my husband out of town," she tyiid. (Spe cial.) At a meeting held yesterday by the Women's Legislative council of Lewis County Mrs. F. T. Camp, Mrs. E. C Truesdell, Mrs. F. G. Gil bert, Mrs. C. A. Charlton, Mrs. C. E. Prince and Mr. S. S. Fair were ap pointed as a committee to arrange for a legislative institute to held in Centralla May 26 an! 27 under the auspices of the council. A banquet will be a feature of the programme". Mrs. Jackson Silbaugh of Seattle, superintendent of the legislative de partment of the Women's Legislative council of Washington, will attend. At yesterday's meeting Mrs. P. A. Tilmont reported on the work of the convention of the state council, held last week in Yakima. Chapter A, P. E. O. sisterhood, is to give a benefit card party this after noon at 2 o'clock in the Laurelhuut club rooms. Chapter C, P. E. O. sisterhood, will meet tomorrow at the home of Mrs. Christmas on Lombard street. . The women of the Church of the Madeline announce an open-air apron bazaar and food sale in their church hall Saturday afternoon and evening! May 8. The girls are planning an attractive pro gramme to be given on Sunday, May ftat 4 o'clock in the social hall of the Young Women's Christian associa tion.
