THE MORNING OREGONIAN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21, 1920 OHIN BAG PRICES FIRMLY MAiNTAINED Market Holds in Line With Strength at Calcutta. SHIPMENTS BACKWARD Quantity Purchased for This Coaet Will Probably Be Sufficient for All Requirements. Buying; ef "bags by dealers has been l!hter this week, owing to the slow de mand from farmers, but prices remain very firm. Hellers to the country quote cat-lots at 22 cents coast. The latest Calcutta cables report 85.000. 00O bass bought to date. Shipments from Calcutta to the end of March were 10,750. 000 bags, so there will have to be a heavy movement in April and the first half ot My to get the bass to the coast In time. The Colusa is now loading a full cargo at Calcutta for San Francisco and it is be lieved there will be enough tonnage avail able for the remaining shipments. Before the war the Pacific coast re quirements averaged about 50.000,000 bags annually. Increase In bulk handling of ffraln has cut down the bag needs some what. Dealers figure there are Just about enough bags In sight to take care of the crop thia year, but there is nothing to In dicate a surplus. The price of grain bags is made in Cal cutta, not here, and Calcutta advices do not show any signs of a weakening market. Last eeason the coast bag market opened at 13 cents, slumped to 10 cents and later worked back to 20 cents and over. Predic tions of a 25-cent market this season are made by some bag men. STRONG MARKET 'OR COARSE GRAIN Eastern Bulk Oats and Barley Are ot Quoted on Local Board. The Merchants' Exchange association de cided yesterday not to call for bids on east ern clipped oats and eastern bulk barley until market conditions change. Extrem high prices in the east have resulted In inactivity in these lines for several weeks past. The markets were all firm. May corn bids were raised 50 cents and blue feed barley were G0c9$l higher. Sacked oats ringed from unchanged to 50 cents higher. Broomhall cabled from Liverpool as to the corn market: "Trade in Plate has broadened considerably of late and busi ness is now on a more active scale. The market for Plate later ruled weak. Oats turned weak owing to large tenders on contract.." ' Terminal receipts, in cars, were reported by the Merchants' Exchange as follows: Wheat.Barley.FIour.Oata.Hay. Portland. Miller's weekly review of the flour trade says: "Flour prices have gone up sharply along the line in 'the past week, patents advancing 30 to 70 cents per barrel. The week's flour output waa presumably by far the smallest for the year, owing to the railroad employes strike, which re duced production at several of the ter minals to a merely nominal amount. The strike and the car shortage combined to make buyers in the large consuming mar kets realize the danger of letting stocks fall too low and Inquiry for flour was so . tlve with a fair volume ot buying. Mills at 'many points are finding it.almost im possible to secure freight cars. "Mill feed Is higher than ever, bran last week passing 900 per ton In eastern markets. "The Kansas-Oklahoma hard winter . wheat mills report a flour production last week representing 42 per cent of capacity the Ohio valley soft winter wheat mills 3ft per cent and the spring wheat mills 34 per eent. CUBE BITTER OFFERED FREELY Kellers Ask M Cents for Extras Eggs Are Firmer, Butter waa offered more freely yester day, but . sellers held out for 66 cents for cube extras. The egg market waa firmer with better local -demand and orders for ship ment to a number of outside points. Bids of 37 cents case count were made .to coun try shippers. Poultry receipts were- of fair size and cleaned up at steady prices. Veal plentiful and the lower grades especially were weak. Pork was steady. Steady Decrease In Visible. Oata gained lo higher. In provisions the outcome varied from no changed figures to 70c lower. Commission houses apparently over reached themselves in pressing the bear side during the earlier trading. Until about midday the majority of leaders held to the view that bullish (actors had been dis counted. Then, however. sentiment changed, owing more or less to extremely pessimistic reports of a leadimr crop au thority regarding domestic wheat and. oats. Oats, like corn, receded at first, hot then rose to the highest prices this eeason. Provision were weak. The Chicago market letter received yes terday by Overbeck A Cooke company of Portland said: Corn Inability of the market to turn readily from strength to weakness was again demonstrated today when heavy offerings were absorbed by a scattered commission house demand and the mar ket rallied sharply from the low point made early in the day. tt waa noticeable, however, that buying power lacked the nap that haa been so conspicuous of late and the undertone waa not strong. Re ceipts were small but the - spot market nevertheless was easy with sales un changed to two cents lower. .A report that Argentina may place an embargo on wheat exports wae responsible for the late advanee. It is understood that a concerted effort is being made by govern ment officials in a position to -bring re sults to relieve the car situation through the grain belt, which might be reflected in a substantially Increased movement dur ing the next 30 days. Country elevator stocks are unusually large and the fact that farmers will be busy with field, work should not Interfere with arrivals at ter minal markets. The eastern demand is at a standstill as evident today by can cellations totaling 190,000 bushels. Oats Considerable pressure waa put en the market early, but not in sufficient volume to over-run the outside demand Induced, by unfavorable weather and crop reports. Some talk was heard that ex porters were asking for offers, but there was no evidence that the report had any foundation. It is by tar too early in the season to predict extensive crop losses and when the sun peglns to shine the country will very likely take on an ap pearance that will be astounding to the pessimists.
