THE MORNING OREGONIAN, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1920 16 CITf "BUBOO" SETTLED WORRY OVER COXTAGIOX HOS PITAL, COMES TO EXD. Site lo Bo Olfereil Adjacent to Vnl Tcrsiijr of Oreson Medical School by Mackenzie. Members of the city council heaved sishs of relief yesterday, for the worst buiaboo which has worried city ooniniissioiit-rj for the last few yearn has been settled the contagion ; hospital. ( For more than two years, effort ; naa oeen made to bring about suffi- ' cient Rvntimtiit to force the city coun cil lo -rect a contagion hospital, with sufficient facilities to handle all contaicu.s cases. Other projects retained $he attention of the city of ficials, and usually the question of the hospital was passed to the county commissioners with the hope that the county would furnish the money to build the hospital. Epidemics, however, forced the city commission to furnish facilities to handle the patients. All of such facilities were makeshift affairs, with cost of operation exceedingly high. All efforts to bring about authority : to construct a real hospital failed, until Mayor Baker last November ; decided that the hospital was a neces- j sity and that it was the duty of the i city council to construct it. ! JMans were drawn and work com- ; menced, but suddenly it was dis- I covered that no funds were available. After more delay the council finally i discovered that certain appropriations j could be canceled, and that certain ; money due the city could be col lected, and money to build the hos p i tii 1 was t bus raised. Yesterday Or. K. A. J. Mackenzie, clean of the medica 1 school of the Vniversity of Oregon, announced that a site for the hospital would be fur nished the city adjacent to the med ical school now under construction by the university. The formal pres entation of the offer will be made in M-ivor liaker earlv neit week, al though Dr. Parrfsh. citv health officer. I is of the opinion that too much money has been expended on the pro posed site of the hospital, adjacent to Kelly Butte rockpile, to justify the city to change its plans on a local ion. According to every member of the city council no further worry is necessary concerning the contagion hospital, as nothing will be per mitted to interfere with the plans of tiie city in completing the hos pital prior to June 1. The City club at its meeting yes terday unanimously indorsed the en tire plan of immediate construction of a contagion hospital, recommend ing that it be placed on the medical vchool grounds. Karly C losing Hour Advocated. OKXTUALIA, Wash.. Feb. 20. Special.) At a meeting held last nig-ht by the retail clerks union, ac tion designed to forre local merchants to close at 6 P. M.
