THE MORNING OREGONIAN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1919. 13 TAKIHG.0F CENSUS STARTS JjUHHY 1 19 Questions Will Be Asked by Enumerators. WOMEN ASKED TO ASSIST Penalty Is Provided Tor Failure to Answer Questions or to Receive Canvasser. and the houses were a few log cab ins by the river, was a visitor in the ! city yesterday. He came in search j of his brother, A. L. Fitzgerald, whom he has not seen for many years. Mr. Fitzgerald heard that his broth er was here a month ago and he came to Portland as soon as the news reached him at Bay Center, Wash., but a search here failed to disclose the whereabouts of A. L... so J. J. Fitzgerald will return to Bay Center and visit his son and daughter until after Christmas and hope that he will be able to get some information re garding the long lost brother before the holiday. - Mr. Fitzgerald is the father of Jesse Fitzgerald, who is now In service in Germany, and who was with the fa mous first division for 16 months at the front. If the young man and the long lost brother could get to Bay Center for Christmas the Fitzgerald family will have a happy reunion, de clares the pioneer. A. L,. Fitzgerald Is a native of Marion county and lived in Portland many years. If your mother-in-law lives in your house and you don't know whether ber father was born in Dublin or Cork, ask her and ask her now. If you aren't sure whether father paid ff the mortgage last spring, you'd better find that out also. If your sick-abed uncle from the old country doesn't know the date he took out his naturalization papers, you'd better look that up along with the rest. There's a reason. On January 1 Uncle Sam, or rather his assistant, William D. Bennett, supervisor of the census for this district, will send out 110 solicitors, whose special task it will be to fill in 19 blanks for per sonal Information concerning each member of every house in the city provided In the census schedule. Warning I Issued. Housewives are warned to familiar ise themselves with the questions and obtain Information from others liv ing with them, in order that the work may go as rapidly as possible. Only two weeks are allowed for the collection of statistics. Mr. Bennett makes the request that they also be prepared to take solicitors into their bouses and provide a table on which the long blanks may be tilled out. In the case of foreign-born it Is abso lutely necessary that all papers re lating to naturalization should be left at the house during the month of January, so the enumerator can see them. This applies-not only to mem bers of the family, but to all other persons who reside there perma nently. All enumerators have been select ed and are ready to begin work. In Multnomah county 1625 applications for positions were received, only 28 of these being for the canvass of ag ricultural districts. Of these 850 were asked to fill out blanks and 640 responded. 487 taking the test and 296 passing. Twenty-three agricul tural applicants took the test and 14 passed. Out of the 296 successful 237 were women, 133 being housewives. Although special attention was given to soldiers, only 18 applied, nine took the test and six passed. Two have since withdrawn. Penalty Is Provided. A summary of the questions to be asked is given below. The govern ment has provided a penalty for re fusal to answer these or to receive the enumerator. The schedule is as fol lows: 1. How many members of the family are there living: permanently at home? 2. Who la the head of the family? I The two are said to have run away from Saskatoon together about Sep tember 1 and the girl has been sought since that time by her parents through the Saskatoon police. Cir culars giving the number of the man's car and other information were re ceived In Portland some time ago. Inspector Craddock had some busi ness at Broadway and Glisan Street yesterday afternoon and while walk ing down the street noticed a Canad ian car standing at the side of the street. A girl was sitting in the car and she was soon joined by a man "Good afternoon, Mr. Langstaff," said the inspector, walking up and greeting the man. ' The man replied in kind.
