Newill, president af the Oregon Civic leagud and member of the Port land school board, today accepted, a position as member of the Oregon com mittee of selection for the Rhodes scholarships. Mr. NewlU Is himself a graduate of Oxford. university and will be of great assistance to the committee m making the best selection for Ore gon's (wo representatives who are to be chosen this fall. SAN FRAItCISCO, Aug. 28. The war savings' committee here received to day notification from the treasury de partment at -Washington that a cap tured German .cannon had been award ed Alaska for the work of that ter- rltory -in ' oversubscribing Its quota of) tha Victory loan. The cannon will be i sent to Juneau. - I The quota of Alaska was $354,390 and' $1,428,850 was subscribed. HISTORY TO BE PICTURED Pageant to Be Presented at Colum bia Park Today. A programme of entertainment, con sisting of folk dances and a historical pageant, will be given at Columbia park this afternoon at 2:30 to mark the closing of the park for this season. About 100 children assisted by a de tail of Boy Scouts, will present a series of dances, and a group of scenes. and tableaux depicting striking in cidents of early pioneer history In the west. .- The programme will be conducted by C.
