at Merchants' Kxchange
Noon Session.
Hay is bfftnninr to arrive In larger vol
mt, but the demand is slack. A good part
f the receipts from he country are con

unsettlinff effect on the market. Alfalfa is
steady and growers are not offering their
-slock freely.
All grain bids were reduced at the Mer
chants Exchange yesterday and no business
was put through. Offers for sacked oats
were down ft 1.50 and eastern bulk oats
TV 1 1 50. Corn declined $101.50. North
western barley bids ranged from SI 0 1.50
lower and eastern bulk barley was 12.5-5
under Saturday's bid. The Chicago barley
option market declined 1H63 cents. At
Can Francisco December barley sold at $3.20
against $3.25 Saturday.
Reports from Texas were that new corn Is
ktng offered in good-sized quantities.

An Insistent demand still prevails for corn

"We are patiently looking forward to the
Inrrease In volume of Argentine shipments.
Oats situation In the United Kingdom re
mains about unchanged. Trade In Imported
cats continues on a fair scale. There has
been some Improvement In the amounts of
native offerings. tut these quantities have
sot proved burdensome. Argentina Weather
has been exceedingly favorable for the new
seedtngs of wheat and oats and substantial
acreage to wheat may be expected if condi
tions continue satisfactory. Wheat remains
firm, due to foreign absorption, Australian

CHICAGO, Aug. 18. Liquidation was a

Lowest Quotations of Tear Recorded

Bonds Also Weak.
NEW YORK. Aug. IS Securities were
unaer-severe pressure in today s very nerv
ous stock market, some of the more active
isuses falling to lowest quotations of the
year, while many others completely effaced
the material gains scored in the long-sustained
bull movement which culminated two
weeks ago.
Liquidation was resumed at the outset,
events over the double holiday, notably the
Mex:ran situation and extension of labor
troubies. especially the local traction strike,
provoking further selling.
From the character of the trading the
decline was obviously assisted to a substan
tial extent by heavy offerings from the
shirts, who continued to press the recent
sd vantage on the apparent lack of pubijc
suppo-t. The reversal was comparatively
moderate and held in check during the first
hour, but gathered greater momentum at
midday and in th later dealings, despite
the unusual ease oi money, call loans show
ing no discrimination for all Industrial collateral.
Fitful rallies towards the close lifted ths

SPECIAL SESSION OPPOSED
Immediate Action on Suffrage Sot
Urgent, Saj'9 Mrs. Castner.
HOOD RIVER. Or., Aug. 18. (Spe
cial.) To call a special session of the
legislature for ratification of the wom
an suffrage amendment in the opinion
of Mrs. Charles H. C. Castner. presi
dent of the Orcgron State Federation of
Women's clubs, will be inadvisable,
Mrs. Castner says.
'Ori-jinally I favored gretting- the leg
islators together for this purpose, but
when so many of them reserve the right
to take up other matters, in case of an
extra session, it now seems best to let
the matter rest.
'If the necessity arises I believe the
legislators could be called together for
that purpose, and that every citizen
would use his influence in bringing
about ratification."
