THE- MORNING OREGOXIAX, FRIDAY, AUGUST 13, 1919. 17 3000 ELKS UTTEHl STATE Portland Ritualistic Team De feats Medford. "SILVER CUP IS AWARDED Klamath Falls Attendance Swelled by Influx of AutoUts and by Special Train's Arrival. KLAMATH FALLS. Or.. Aug. 14- fSpecial. Klamath Falls is the mecca of Klkdom of Oregon today. Every road leading into the city was u-ed by Elks who came by automobile. The special train brought in nearly 1000 rf the antlered horde i-o far. 3000 are attending the second annual convention vt the Oregon State Elks' association. Portland was the winner In the rit ualistic contest, the first official event o!the convention. Although Portland was returned the winner, the award was only by a small marcrain over Medford. Portland scored Sa.4 points, while Medford obtained 02. 1 points. Silver Cup 1m Awarded. This contest was staged for a beau tiful silver cup, donated by William F. McKenney of Portland, a man who has worked continuously tor -the suc cess of the state association. Although Portland lodge won the cup, it will be necessary foi- this lodge to win the cup next year to obtain permanent posses sion of the trophy. Incidentally, Portland lodge will meet the winner of the ritualistic con ttst staged by the Washington Eiks' fcssociatirn at North Yakima, next week, io an Inter-state contest be tween Oregon and Washington. On every hand one hears compliments bestowed upon the members of Klam ath lodge for their hospitality. Hotels and private residences have beci thrown open to the lodgemen and their families. The executive- committee, headed by K. B. Hall, manager of the White -Pelican, arranged for the open ing of the. new courthouse, in which liioo cots were installed for the accom modation of the Elks. Conrtbounes May Be Vscd. Another new courthouse, for be it known that Klamath Kails has three courthouses, one in use and two others awaiting the decision of the' circuit court for disposal, will be utilized Jj. it becomes necessary. Many of the isitiug lodgemen are camped in the grounds prepared by the local committee. Hot and cold water has been piped to them for the conven ience of the visitors. A review in brief of the accomplish ments of the Elks' lodge during the progress of the war was given by George I. Baker, mayor of Portland, principal speaker at the opening of the victory celebration at the Elks' tem ple tonight. BolKhevint Uarniiis (;iien. Two thousand Elks there assembled heard Mayor Baker sound a note of warning against the bolshevists who are endeavoring, he said, to assume control of the government and run this country in the manner that wrecked Russia. Mayor H. R. StruMa., of Klamath Falls, in hji enthusiastic address, wel comed 'the "visitors, although none of the antlered herd who have assembled needed any such assurance, as the ac tions of the citizens of the citv had already made this statement a fact. The first business session of the con- ' vention will open Friday with Presi dent William S. Kennedy presiding.; Among matters of importance which 1 will come before the convention is the report by Walter S. Tooze nr.. of Salem lodge X. 338, who is chairman of the memorial committee. Mr. Tooze is father of Lieutenant Leslie B. Tooze. who gave his life for his country in the battle of Argonne. A check today showed Mr. Tooze to be the only elk in attendance at the convention who had lost a son in the world conflict and who had sons who were all offi cers in the United States army. Bend Delegation Heard. No delegation of Elks in Klamath Falls is attracting: the attention ot making more noise than the delegation of Bend Elks, members of the "babv lodge" of the state, led by "Pat" Me-ha-ffey. banker of Bend and exalted ruler of the newly instituted lodge. This delegation is seen everywhere. Only two members of the lodge are not in attendance and they, it is said, were delegated to remain in Bend to carry on organization activities there. Harry G. Allen, secretary of the Ore gon State Elks association, is aspiring to succeed Dr. Kennedy as president of the state association. II. Alexander, vice-president of the association, also is an aspirant to this position. Salem seems to have the edge on the contest for the 19 ml convention, Pendle ton having decided to wait another year before making a contest for the annual meeting. The convention will close early Sun day morning w ith a "Mardi gras" aance on the streets and with a confetti bat tle between picked teams from the Roseburg. McM inn ville and Portland lodges, assisted by the women. HOMES TO BK "SPRITLD VP" Prizes Tor Airactive I.awns Are Of fered at Klamath Kails. KLAMATH FALLS. Or., Aug. 14. (Special.)
