THE MORNING OREGOXIAy, TUESDAY. JULY 22, 1910. . CANTALOUPE MARKET -IS WEAKER 111 THE Trade Is Overloaded With In ferior Stock. IMPROVEMENT IS EXPECTED Imperial Valley Season Is About .Finished Standard Turlocks Meet With Fair Demand. There was a generally easier feeling in the local cantaloupe market yesterday, due in part to the liberal receipts of the past few days and In part to th relatively poor qual ity of a good deal of the product sent in from the south. Front street dealers, how ever, vero confident that he market soon would take a turn for the better, for tha indications are for a somewhat lighter ship ping movement this week and next. "Hea-y unloading here of inferior Im perial Valley stock the last of the week was In the main responsible for the breaking of the local market," said a Front street handler yesterday. "The southern shippers had considerable stocks to move and they were obliged to get rid of them as best they could. It seems that they picked Pprtland as the most promising outlet for their sur plus and proceeded to unload here. "A very considerable portion of tfce Im perial Valley stock sent here the past few days was more or less off in quality and some of it overripe, and this naturally had a bad effect on a market already none too strong. The indications for the near future, however, are more favorable, for the Im perial Valley season Is about finished. Ship ments from that quarter from this time on will be lipht and shortly will cease alto Rcther. We look for at least a slight im provement in the market this week. Prices may not Improve materially, but a better market tone is promised." Receipts from California yesterday to taled 0 cars, including both Imperial Valley and Turlock stock. Imperials sold generally at $2 to $2.50 a standard crate, while Tur locks of good quality met with a fair de mand at $3.50 to $3.75. Off-grade stuff went at whatever prices were available, and in some instances these were very low. The supply of watermelons was adequate and dealers generally reported good quality in the offerings. Prices ranged from $2.75 to $3 a Hundred, and with the weather warm there was a good demand. The outlook Is for a heavier movement of watermelons from .this time on. COARSE GRAINS SHOW STRENGTH Higher Trices Are Quoted Locally on Both Oat and Barley. At yesterday's session of the Merchants' Kxchitrige bids were raised on No. 2 white feed oats and on standard feed barley as well, the former going up 50 cents and the latter 50 cents to $l.ro. The advances here reflected the generally stronger situation in the eastern grain markets. Chicago reported advances on both oats and barley. Broomhall's latest report says" of wheat and barley in the northwest: 'Drouth and heat are cutting the crop of wheat severely in the three northern Pacific states. The outturn will probably be 70, 000,000 and the barley yield will also likely be about 50 per cent." Figures given out on the American visible supply were as follows: Bushels. CROP REPORTS KXAGCKRATED Irrigation Districts Will Fraduc. Big Tonnage of Alfalfa and Hay. HBt.ENA. Mont.. July 21. Charles D. Greenfield, state commissioner of agriculture, said today that some reports regarding Montana crop conditions are exaggerated. He has prepared a review showing that 1.075.000 acres Jn tho state will give good crops. The Irrigated districts do well, he hsld, and fanners In dry areas do well when they understand the- dry farm roe-.hods. "It i unfortunate that the belief should go abroad that all other parts of Montana are dried up and that there is no feed In the state." Mr. Greenfield said. "The fact I that Montana hts a very large area under irrigation in southern, central and eastern Montana which will produce a very larje tonnage of alfalfa and other hay." CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS.
