Living Wage, Reasonable Hours, Equal Opportunities and Pay for Women, Among Objects. NEW YORK, July 14. Protestant churches of A. ..erica should be brought into closer relations with the wage earners of the nation, says a statement issued by the commission on church and social service of the federal council of the churches of Christ in America. To accomplish this purpose, the com mission proposes that hundreds of pow erful, highly socialized and democratic ally organized churches should be es tablished in industrial centers. It suggests that seminaries should train ministers to know how to admin ister such churches, men who will know economics and social problems, as well as theology. It proposes an alliance of the church with the workers themselves. "to achieve the great objects for which the workers are struggling, euch as living wages, reasonable hours lor conditions of labor, equal opportunities and pay for women, participation in manage ment and ownership and abolition of child labor." It is proposed also by the commission t' t the church denominations should agre among themselves to establish non-competing parishes for these churches in industrial centers and that the denominations should close churches which compete. NEWS FROM SOUTH WANTED LATEST MEXICAN" "INCIDENT" AROUSES INTEREST. Word Regard! ii Attack and Rob bery of Boatload of America u Sailor Is Kxnccted Soon. WASHINGTON, July 2. Although neither the state nor navy department received any further information today regarding the attack and robbery on July H of a boatload of American saiiors from the U. S. S. Cheyenne in the Ternesi river, near Tampico, Mex ico, the incident continued to eclipse all else in interest in official circles. There was no attempt to minimize the gravity of the situation as expressed in official circles when the first re ports reached the state department yesterday. Additional information is expected by both departments within a very few days, probably tomorrow. At the navy department it was said there has been nothing received to indicate whether the note of inquiry addressed by Sec retary Taniels yesterday to Com mander Karl Feck Finney of the cruiser Topeka at Tampico. who re ported t he attack, had been received by the officer. Some delay in the receipt of an an swer was anticipated because of in ability to communicate direct by wire less with, the Topeka due to the ex istence in the Gulf of Mexico of what is known by radio experts as a "static." The secretary's message undoubtedly would have to be transmitted over land wires from Galveston to Tampico and t e lepra ph ic communication over Mexi can wires is subject to considerable delay. W bile Commander Kinney undoubt edly had investigated the affair thor oughly, it was pointed out that in view of the request for a "fuller report and result of investigation." he might deem it expedient to inquire further before replying. One-third of the school children in Czecho-Slovakia are absent from school every day on account of hunger, ac cording to Red Cross investigators re port. Many of the children in the schools were found so weak from lack of nourishment that they could not hold their heads erect. Frequently children had to be carried home be cause they had not the strength to walk. Miss Kdith Hoyt. of Washington. I- C. and Mrs. Kthel L. Jbarle. of New York city, two of the trained social workers sent by the Red Cross into 17 towns in the Erzebirge district, re ported that in this section 90 per cent of the children were actually straving. To relieve this situation, arrangements have been made for the establishment of public kitchens throughout the country. The Americans are supervis ing their operation and the distribution of food supplies to them. "The children were undersized and backward." writes Miss Hoyt, "both physieallq and mentally. They showed signs of tuberculosis. rickets and anemia. We went through school-room after school-room asking, 'how many have had no breakfast this morning? In a. class of 4$, 19 little hands went up. This wa typical of the situation throughout the district. "Nettles, a weed, form the principal b- 8 Hardware b- 9 Buildings and Lands b-10 Fabrics b-11 Scrap b-12 Shop Equipment b-13 Office Equipment b-14 Miscellaneous item of diet In the poorer homes, and only one town we visited had any potatoes. Children of seven are like children of four. Chil dren of 10 or 12 are the size of a normal six-year-old. Their faces are gray with jailor and abnormally sad and gloomy."
