A scheme to raise money without labor uras dirulsed here yesterday through he arrest by federal officers of Harry Wilde and his wife, who are said to be known in various parts of the country under the names of Watson and Clark. The couple are alleged to be profes sional bea-a-ars and a book in their pos session showed that since coming; here on January 1 of this year Wilde had collected St643 from the citizens of As toria and vicinity. The man pretended to be blind. It is Fald. although a test showed his eye sight unimpaired. Ha carried a peti tion In which it was alleged he was sufferins; from a curable affliction of the eyes. He solicited money to assist in sending him to a sanitarium. On coming here he is said to have fors-ed the Chamber of Commerce In dorsement of his petition and this aid ed him materially in raisins; funds. Wilde is said to hare mads a complete statement regarding his operations. He explained, the police aay. that he bought cocaine on prescriptions signed by the Fictitious name of an alleged physician, but a letter found In his pocket indi cated that a physician, whose home is said to be in I'ortland, might hare pre pared them for him. Mr. Wilde is said to be a native of Milwaukie, Or. after service overseas with the JlSth engineers. He was stationed with his unit of the 318th for several months be fore leaving; for a port of embarkation near Coblenz. HOOD TO CELEBRATE PEACE Welcome to Returned Soldiers Big Feature of Festivities. HOOP RIVER. Or., June 30. (Spe cial.) With tho signing; of peace, the commercial club, in charge of the local Fourth of July celebration, will make the day one of joint celebration of signing the treaty at Versailles and of the Declaration of Independence. It will also be a day of welcome for re turned soldiers. The commercial club has sent Invi tations to the mayors of Portland and all surrounding mid-Columbia towns to visit the valley of apples on the fourth. Special invitations have been issued the Portland Ad club and the Port land Chamber of Commerce. Hood Engineer Return!-. HOOD RIVER. Or., June 30. Captain Carroll M. Hurlburt, who at the time he wss called to the colors was Hood River county engineer, has arrived from Camp Lewis, where he has just been mustered out of service. Captain Hurl burt was engaged in road engineering work for nearly a year In France. ST. HELENS TO CELEBRATE JUSTICE THOMAS McBRIDE DELIVER ORATION". TO Hundreds or Portland Artisans, Ac companied by Band, Will Partici pate in Festivities. ST. HELEN'S, Or, June 30. (Spe cial.) The programme for the celebra tion of July 4 and 5 has been com pleted. The fastivities will be held un rfpr the direction of the St. Helens Chamber of Commerce and many vis itors are exnected. Beginning with a sunrise salute on the morning of the 4th. the programme will continue for two days. A patriotic nararip. in which returned soldiers will take part, will be one of the big fea tures. Chief Justice Thomas McBride will deliver the oration. A free bar hecue will be served at the city park at noon. In the afternoon there will be races, water sports, log-rolling con tests and baseball games. At night there will be a grand fireworks display from a barge moored in the Co.umbia river. The Portland Artisans have chosen St. Helens as their meeting place and 100 members of that lodge will be here, coining by special steamers and on the barge Swan. They will bring their own band and two baseball teams. The Chamber of Commerce has posted cash prizes for all contests and the cit'zens of St. Helens will keep open house to the visitors. Elks Initiate Large Class. LEWISTON-. Idaho, June 30. (Spe cial.) The Elks' initiation and enter tainment held Saturday evening was enjoyed by 500 members and candidates from Lewiston and surrounding towns. Following the banquet at 6 o'clock the Initiation ceremony took place. Fifty candidates were initiated. -The pro gramme included several numbers given by Spokane talent. MRS. BENTLEY IS HONORED Reception Given Former President of Canby Relief Corps. HOOD RIVER, Or., June 30. (Spe cial.) Members of Canby Woman's Relief Corps gave a reception yester day to their former president, Mrs. L. AL Bentley, who was elected last week at The Dalles to the presidency of the Oregon department of the corps, and to the latter's newly appointed secretary, Mrs. F. H. Button of this city. Pigeon Taken at Klumatli. . KLAMATH FALLS. Or., June 30. William Swift, who resides on the Klamath Indian reservation, was sur prised Saturday evening when a carrier pigeon came to his home. The bird had a silver band on the right foot on which was inscribed 2716 A-16, and on the left foot a band stamped 1815. CHERRY GROWERS PROSPER Lewiston Valley Crop Returns Esti mated at 950,000. LEWISTON. Idaho. June 30. (Spe cial.) The cherry season In the Lewis ton valley has reached a close Packing houses have closed, and only small ship ments of late fruit from the upper Clearwater orchards will be handled. The total value of the cherry crop in this valley will reach more than $50,000. by far the largest sura ever realized from this source.
