EXPORT DEMAND BEGINS TO ENLARGE
Progress of Domestic Business Revival Is
Vigorous.
NEW YORK, Juno 27. Dun's Review to
morrow will say:
With the signing of the peace treaty,
which Is now Imminent after months of
waiting, gateways of commerce that have
long been closed will be reopened and broad- 1
er international trade relations permitted. I
Behind the domestic business revival that I
Is vigorously In progress there Is not only I
the practical assurance of another year of
agricultural prosperity end the present ex- 1
ceptional retail distribution In this country,
but also Europe s dependence upon Amerl
can markets for products needed during the
reconstruction era, and it is significant that
the export carl is already expanding in many
quarters. The result of the enlarging home
and foreign demands is clearly seen in the
Increasing scarcity of supplies of various
articles, notwithstanding the rising tide of
production, and reports of goods being vir
tually withdrawn from sale are becoming
more common as manuractunng capacity l:
engaged farther ahead and still higher prices
an near inevitable.

Short Covering Leads to Frequent
Rallies in Spite of Some
Pressure.
CHICAGO, June 27. The corn market
weakened today, liquidation carrying the
July delivery more tnan 1 cent lower.
Trading was not of large proportions, how
ever, and while the distant months de
clined with July, their recovery was more
pronounced. The close was steady and for
all but the near-by months well away from
the low point of the day. Final figures were
lc lower to c higher, with July $1.78
to 11.78 'i; September. $1,759. to $1.75.
and December, $1.5301.53. - Oats closed
unchanged to c lower and provisions
closed 30c higher to 2oc lower, pork regis
tering the gain.
While some pressure was noticeable
throughout the session in the corn market.
frequent rallies due to shorts seeking to
cover kept pricea fluctuating.
Oats were unsettled and moved In sympa
thy with corn but within narrower limits.
Crop and weather conditions showed Im
provement in some sections and the cash
demand was slow.
Provisions showed fair strength on ad

Motors Are Spectacular Feature ot

NEW TORK, June 2T. That speculative
interests are now almost wholly dependent
upon the movements ot money was striking
ly illustrated today, the stock market rally
ing very generally and trading expanding
perceptibly as the rates for call funds re
laxed.
The opening for loans was. S to tier
cent, those quotations being the lowest
initial rate lor the week and thi .am .ir-
nificant, as all loans made today hold -over
uuiu i lie coming week.
These rates compare with yesterday's high
of 9 per cent and the previous day's 15 per
cent, and bespeak a favorable weekly bank
statement, indicating also that next week
mia-year settlements have been largely an
tlcipated.
There was only one noteworthy exceotion
to the higher prices achieved, rails lagging

Trip Over Columbia Highway AVith
Cliinook Salmon Feast Ends
1019 Meeting.
As a convention city, from every
angle of gratified anticipation, Port
land is the finest in America, accord-
ne to the dictum of more than 300
members of the Greeters of America,
who concluded their annual assembly
last night and scattered again to the
undreds of hostelnes and clues irom
which they pilgrimaged.
Yesterday, with the business ot tne
convention concluded, was the social
ay of tho session, wholly devoted to
an automobile tour of the Columbia
highway and to the enjoyable pro
gramme of entertainment which un
folded on the celebrated scenic drive.
Leaving the city in early morning,
ith a fleet of automobiles the Greeters
hirled away to Eagle creek, where
they sat them down to a salmon oaKe,
ith 17 royal Chinook salmon as the
feature of the feast. The salmon were
prepared by the chef of the Hotel
Portland, and members of his statr,
ho made tho trip to Eagle creek for
the specific purpose of seeing that the
e fish came from the pan in style
that did not hazard their wide repute.
The day concluded with a luncheon at
Chanticleer Inn. followed by dancing.
Many of the Greeters left on early
trains yesterday afternoon, but.the
majority of the convention crowd de
parted at midnight, immediately after
the return from the highway tour.
the 23d enginors, former f tate highway

Prank Booth of this city, has returned
from overseas service. Mr. Booth gave
up his position with the state to enter

Murder, as Feared.
An old hair mattress, which a tenant
who formerly lived at 247 Whitaker
street had left behind when he moved,
stirred the police bureau late yester
day with the thought that they had
another "trunk murder" to solve.
J. Sadler, the new tenant in the
dwelling, discovered the mattress in an
old milk can. Seeing the hair, he
thought the can contained a corpse, and
Telephoned for the police. Inspector
Mallett answered the call and, utter
gingerly digging to the bottom of the
can with a stick, decided that the re
mains were not human.

SHOWER BENEFITS GRAIN
Rain Near Pendleton Ovcrjojs
Wheat Growers.
PENDLETON, Or., June 27. (Spe
cial.) Farmers in the vicinity of Pen
dleton are overjoyed as the result of
a heavy shower last night. The rain
was heaviest around this city and .at
Cayuse in the wheat section eastward.
A good shower in the Pilot Rock sec
tion may have been the means of sav
ing a good part of the grain there. Hay
ing, now in progress in some parts
of the county, was not interfered with.
