Inauguration of a state-wide occu pation campaign has been announced by the Young Men's Christian associa tion through the interstate committee for Oregon and Idano. of which W.' J. Ierr of Corvallis is chairman, and thm Portland Y. M. C. A., by W. M. I-add, - president. The object of the campaign is to meet tho needs of older boys and young men in rural communities and cities of less than 6000 population, and is in the nature of an enlarged extension programme. An appeal for co-operation of men ef Portland has been sent out. and an Additional contribution of from 25 to 40 per cent for state and international work is desired. Thoso who have not pledged their subscriptions for this year will b asked to make a com bined subscription. The proposed programme will make possible the organization of county associations, leaders declare, and will Frve to add to the progress and char acter of city life through the medium of rural communities. LUMBER CROWDING STEEL HIGH COST OF 3IETAXS GIVES TIMBER BIG OPPORTUNITY. Russell Hawkins Predicts Prolonged Activity for Coat Mills After Eastern Trip Future Is Safe. There are three good reasons why the lumber industry, and other industries, for that matter, must go forward at an unprecedented pace to an era of nation wide prosperity the delayed produc tion of the war period, which comprises an industrial deficit, the normal de mands of the present, at home, and the abnormal demands of Europe during the reconstruction period. Such is the conclusion of Russell Hawkins, of the Whitney company. Ore gon timber operators, who returned Wednesday from a month's visit in the east and at Detroit, headauarters of the compapy. During his absence from Portland. Mr. Hawkins sought every available source of information relative to business conditions of the near fu ture, receiving the unanimous assurance that American industry is at the thresh hold of its biggest task and greatest prosperity. "The outlook for the lumber industry is especially fine," said Mr. Hawkins, i yesterday. "The existing high price of steel, which shows no tendency to de cline, is inducing a great many eastern concerns to go in for 'mill construction that is, the building of new plants from lumber, not steel, by employing the slow-burning construction plan, which has been found , excellent as a safe guard against fire losses. what appltes to the lumber business, in my opinion, applies to nearly all American industries."
