THE MORMNG OREGONIAX, SATURDAY, MAY 24, 1910. POLICEMEN OW DUTY IN SUSPECT RESORTS 'Children's Playground Open Today Shoot the Chutes, Merry-Go-Round and Swings Fifth Floor 2 iteffa&tie: The-Quality- Store Zu&&& 62 Years in Portland 7hlzZj$&r. I Established 1857 ZtxZJ&z Sea Xews: .for All the Family Mayor Adopts New Campaign Against Gambling Clubs. 22 sonaole SUITS IN COURT EXPECTED Council Will Be Asked to Revoke Licenses of Places Against Which Evidence Found. Police officers were stationed in every alleged gambling- house in Port land last night, at the direction of. Chief of Police Johnson, to collect evi dence which will be utilized in future prosecutions. This plan has been adopted following the decision of the circuit court that the so-called barred door ordinance was illegal. It is probable that the action of the police in this connection will result in injunction suits by the attorneys rep resenting the men who are operating social clubs in Portland, in which the police allege gambling is conducted nightly. In fact, in adopting the new plan the police department has disregarded ad vice given by the city attorney's office, which has ruled that the placing of police officers in regularly licensed clubs is irregular and will probably re sult in disastrous court action against the city. Mayor Orders Movev The plan is not a new one, having been tried out in many cities. In sev eral cases damage suits filed against the cities by the clubs which were entered by police officials have been won by the club managers in the high est courts of the land. Mayor Baker, who has approved the plan, said yesterday that he was will ing to try the plan as a means of breaking up gambling in Portland. It was thought that the "barred door" ordinance would be a successful weapon, but with this given a death blow by the court. Mayor Baker said he was now ready to resort to any measure which would aid in breaking the gambling ring which is said to be operating in Portland. Another plan which has been de cided upon in connection with the plac ing of the police officers in the various clubs is the presentation of all avail able evidence to the city council, in iin effort to have this body revoke the licenses held by the various clubs to operate card rooms. Some May Escape. - Perhaps not all the card rooms in the city will be affected by this measure, said Chief Johnson, but all against which, the police have already secured tny evidence, and all those in which the police secure data in the future will be cited before the city council in this way. A similar plan was invoked against rooming houses, which enabled the city officials to keep a. careful check upon all lodsring houses and hotels in the tity. Through the license plan many rooming house owners who were not conducting legitimate business were forced to retire, and those that are conducting, their establishments upon legitimate lines have not been mo lested. Mayor Baker and Chir-f T'hnson are of the opinion that the li plan will no more, perhaps, than an., -.her meas ure to eliminate professional gambling In Portland.
