The first Walla Walla asparagus reached
the street yesterdsy and was put on sale

changed Day's Run
Is Small.
There was a light run of stock at the
yards yesterday and trading waa not very
active. Cattle and sheep continued firm,
but hogs were reported weak, though the
eastern hog marketa were strong and high
er. The best price on hogs bid by local
buyers was $18.33 or 13 cents under the
previous top. and the bulk of sales during
the day were at this price.
Receipts were 41 cattle, S calves. 042 hoga
and 10 sheep. The day'a sales were as

The tone of the mtlrfeed market was weak
yesterday, because of the placing of the
large government flour order, but millers
point out that a considerable part of the
flour sold has already been ground and
the mlllfeed gone rnto consumption. There
Is alas reason to believe California wtn soon
come Into the market for a large supply of
feed. and. therefore, sellers are not Inclined
to make concessions at this time.
The government floor order Is figured at
about 85.000 tona Some of the miners. It is
said, were taken unawares and sold more to
the corporation than they Intended. It was
not anticipated the government would ac
cept S3 per cent of the bids, ae In the pre
vious month It took only 23 per cent.

Wool Sells Higher at Eoadon.
LONDON. April 2. Ten thousand, three
hundred bales of wool were sold at auction
here today. The attendance waa larae and
there waa a strong demand. Good merinos
and fine croaa-breds were 10 per cent and
other gradea from unchanged to 3 per cent
over the government minimum price. All
the allies except America mere buyers.

Eastern and San Francisco trade re
ports received by wire yesterday at the
local office of the bureau of markets:
Chicago. Some activity developed on this
market late yesterday afternoon and this
morning there was a satisfactory buying In
terest to again advance the quotations lttc,
some sales being recorded later In the day
as high as 64c. Receipts appear to be still
too light to operate this market on a basts
of prices much lower than those at present
in force. However, dealers are not buying
much beyond their immeaiate needs, and a
slight undercurrent ot nervousness is sill,
noted. There was confidence in some quar
ters that cars or centralized wou.d bring
He over the quotation, but no sa.es were
ceported at this figure up to the aomsnu
New York. Only a fair amount of
wholesale trading took place today, due lu

NEW YORK, April 2. Regardless of the
fact that many substantial gains were made
and . fairly well sustained, trading on 'the
Stock Exchange today was the most psr
functory and least Interesting of any session
in several weeks. The volume of trading
kept pace with recent moderately large aver
ages. Steels and equipments, as a whole, were
strong. United States Steel scoring an ex
treme advance of 1 to par, but yielding
fractionally at the end with other leaders.
Including the Investment rails.
Shippings, oils, coppers and the distilling
ana toou snares commanded greater atten
tion, however, at gross advances of 1 to 4
points, moderate impairment resulting on
selling for profits. Numerous secondary
specialties, such as chemicar and paper is
sues, also American Woolen and Hide &
Leather preferred were firm to strong, but
motors and other subsidiaries reacted 1 tc
points under moderate pressure. Sales
amounted to 865,000 shares.
For the first time since the "un-pegglng"
of rates, the market for exchange on Lon
don was distinctly strong, Italian remit
tances also steadying, but francs eased
again.
Foreign bonds were quiet but steady. Lib
erty issues varied slightly and domestic
rates snd utilities hardened. Total sales,
par value, aggregated $4,150,000. Old
United States bonds were unchanged oa call.
