A BATTLE between an intellectual vampire and a faithful wife for possession of the latter's hus band a fight that starts in the drawing-room and ends in the kitchen is rirpicted in "Women's Weapons," the Paramount photoplay opening today at the Liberty Theater with Ethel Clayton and Elliott Dexter as the leading players. The artistic vamp, yearning for a roul mate, plus someone to pay her bills, affixes herself to Nicholas El liott, an author. The wife, realizing flie hold the vamp is getting on her Jiusband, maneuvers so that the scene of battle is shifted to a seaside cot use. The husband is cured of his in fatuation when his soul mate is ex posed as lazy, a. slattern, stupid and bad-tempered. A Christie comedy and a Robert Tiruce scenic are other features on the Bin. Another "Little Era." Another 'Little Eva" has been dls rovered in the ranks of motion picture stars. It seemed that when Lillian Lor raine. Pearl White, May Allison, June Caprice and Mary Miles Minter proudly said they began their careers in the role of "Little Eva" in "Uncle Tom's Cabin." the drama had done much for the screen. Dater it was divulged that even Wallace Reid was cast as "Little Eva" on one occasion. Marguerite Clark even played the part on th screen. Now comes Edith Roberts, rather be lated, with the admission or perhaps its a. claim that she made her theatri cal debut in New York in tho popular role. The Universal star thought her s:agn career ended when she "died" in the school play, but it was only tre beginning. Screen Gossip. ftsna Q. Nilsson at last has earned the right to be starred. Metro will pre sent Jier in a Yukon story, with Joe King as her leading man. Anna has been supporting many of the most prominent masculine stars, appearing recently with Bert Lytell. Marguerite Marsh, who played in the H'eudini serial, is to be star, or co-star. in the Craig Kennedy serial soon to be made. Herbert Rawlinson will be the other star of the serial. D. W. Griffith has signed Richard Marthlemess as one of his leading men. Dick is at present with Dorothy Gish in the making of "Boots." Robert Leonard, who recently wedded Mae Murray, is now Norma Talmadge's director. Bill Farnum is at it again. He's pic turing in Florida, but devoting much of his time to hunting and fishing. Far num is the angling king of pictures. It wasn't so long ago that Gloria Swanson was earning $3 a day at Es sanay, playing everything from nurse to queen. Then came her comedy car reer with Mack Sennett. Now she's a leading woman of the dramatic pic tures, Cecil B. DeMille giving her a chance in "Don't Change Your Hus bands." The film rights to the Hall Caine novel, "The Woman Thou Gavest Me," have been purchased by Paramount and the story soon will be picturized. The length of time between Jack Mower's last engagement and his pres ent one was just one haircut. He fin ished a picture at the Universal stu dios, then hustled to the barber shop, where he had his overgrown hair cut. and then hustled to the Metro studios, where a job awaited him. Mower is the chap who used to be leading man with Margarita Fisher, the Oregon girl. Dorothy Dalton will have Thomas Holding and Tully Marshal with her in an early picture. Views of the exterior and interior of Thomas H. Ince's new seagoing yacht will be taken shortly in making a new Ince photoplay. Forrest Stanley, who of late has been appearing exclusively upon the stage, has returned to moving pictures, hav ing been engaged to play opposite Shir ley Mason, the beautiful young Para mount star, in her new photoplay. Mr. Stanley was formerly a screen star with Morosco-Pallas. Sereendom's youngest star. Llla Le, has returned to the West Coast to re sume her work In Paramount pictures after a rest of some six weeks. PENDLETON DEATH TOLL 38 650 Cases Up to January 1 Are Re ported by City Physician. PENDLETON. Or., Jan. 23. (Spe cial.) Thirty-nine deaths, due to in fluenza, occurred in Pendleton up to January 1, according to report of City Physician avanaugh. Brothers Are Arrested and Held on Snspicion of Having Been Implicated. NEW YORK The lure of the "great White Way," according to the police. was responsible for an alleged robbery of $350,000 worth of bonds by a youth of 19, Cornelius Cregan. from the stock brokerage firm of McClure, Jones & Read, of 115 Broadway. Crezran hu not yet been arrr.id, but his brother Lester and James J. Tun- ney, both 20, were taken into custody, the former at 699 Eagle avenue, Bronx, and the latter at 752 West End avenue, on suspicion of having been implicated m the alleged crime. The police charge that ComeMus Cre gan stole the bonds a few hours after he had obtained employment as a run ner for the firm. They say he began work at 9 o'clock December 30 and at 2 o'clock that aftemocn was sent to the Bank of Commerce with SO $1000 lib erty bonds, 200 bonds of General Mo tors. 300 of Ohio City Gas, 100 of Read ing Railway, 100 of Republic Iron and Steel, 20 of United States Steel and 100. of American Locomotive, which were never delivered. According to police all the bonds were negotiable and a close search Is now being mide for the certificates. Detectives who examined Lester Cre gan at headquarters say he admitted receiving $45,000 worth of bonds from Cornelius, which were sold to a broker at 125th street and Park avenue for $925, payment being made with $50 In cash and a check for $S75. The name of the seller was not given. It was also stated that young Tunney was given $300 and that he had $270 of this when arrested. The arresting officers say Cornel ins Cregan has been living away from home for several months and staying in Broadway hotels, where the ex penses were far above his ordinary In come. For three years he was employed by the brokerage firm of Domintck & Dominick. the police say, and bore a high reputation there for Industry and hones ty. SONS OF DEMOCRACY START Spokane Chapter, No. 1, Great War Veterans, Organize. SPOKANE. Wash. Spokane chapter No. 1. Sons of Democracy, Great War Veterans, is the name of an organiza tion of returned soldiers which has been formed here. According to the by-laws, which have been approved by the executive committee of the associa tion, honorably discharged officer and enlisted men of the Army. Navy men or Marine Corps who aerved In the world war are eligible to membership. The purpose of the organization Is declared to be "to bind together the honorably ' discharged veterans who shall further the welfare of the Gov ernment, both in a political and an ) ecnnomll way, and to further the mu tual Interests of the members." Each member must take an oath to support the Constitution of the United States and the articles of war. Local backers of the organization hope to widen Its scope to Include chapters throughout tne Nation.
