20 THE MORNIXG OREGONIAX, TTJESDAT, JAXTJAHY 21. 1910. INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC APPARENTLY CHECKED Only 169 New Cases Reported for Past 48 Hours. 33 DEATHS IS HIGH RECORD Many of Totalities Occurred Darins Last Four Days of Last 'Week. Autos Are Needed. AUTOMOBILE OWNERS ATTK1V TION! Automobiles and their drivers are needed at once for the trans poration of nurses who are mak ing calls upon people suffering from influenza. These calls are upon the people who cannot af ford nursing service. If you can spare your car and driver for a few hours each day, register at 1015 Spalding building or call the Consolidated Health Bureau. IR. E. A. SOMMER, Director-General Consolidated Health Bureau. - v -J Portland's influenza epidemic, or at least the second wave, is apparently well checked, according to health offi cials. Only 169 new cases were re ported to the city health bureau for the 48 hours ending last night. This is the lowest 48-hour period report that has been received for more than a month. Thirty-three deaths from influenza were also recorded, an exceedingly high report. Many of these deaths occurred Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of last week, and, according to physicians, are losses which must be charged to the eecond wave of the epidemic. Crest of Epidemic Passed. The unusually low record of new cases may be due partially to failure of physicians to report new cases, but in view of the eplendid record attained in this regard by the physicians during the past two weeks, such a view Is not likely. Dr. Sommer, director-general of the body which is directing the fight against the disease, stated yesterday that the crest of the epidemic was passed. Proper precautionary meas ures, he stated, would bring the num ber of new cases down to a minimum. Twenty-three nurses from Camp I-ewis arrived in Portland last night and will be assigned to duty by Dr. Sommer today. Some of the nurses, secured through an appeal to Surgeon General Blue in Washington, will be sent to the private hospitals, others will be assigned to work in the Mult nomah County Hospital, which is now being used exclusively for the care of influenza patients, and others will be Rivento the Visiting Nurses' Associa tion to aid in its work of caring for indigent persons suffering from in fluenza. Appeal Made for Automobiles. An appeal for the donation of auto mobiles to aid the Visiting Nurse Association in its work of making calls has been made by Dr. Sommer. "The Visiting Nurses are doing a splendid work," said Dr. Sommer. "They are now forced to ride on streetcars, but if automobiles were furnished they could increase their work, which is solely caring for the people who can not secure or pay for nursing care. Automobile owners who can spare their cars and drivers for a few hours each day have an opportunity of doing much good work in connection with the anti influenza campaign." The barracks erected on the Mult nomah County Hospital grounds are ready for use. Influenza patients are being cared for at the hospital, but if it should be filled the adjacent barracks will be utilized. , STOCKMAN IS SELF-SLAIN J.
