If the Presidency contest is settled, s SenateV Moser stales, the Speaker ship is as far from solution as ever, apparently. All the candidates for Speaker are still In Portland and none appears anxious to overlook any bets. Speaker Contest la Doubt. Representative V. V. Fuller, who was in Portland a couple of day, was pulled toward the Herbert Gordon ramp, but had a talk with Seymour Jones, and says "the latest thing- I've heard is that I'm for Bjrdick." Fuller lias also been considered in the Kubli column. ' Mr. Jones is believed to have the following: as his support: Dedman, Cross, Schuebel. Brand. Thomas. El more. Looney. Weeks. Hughes, Martin and Thrift, and. counting-, himself, 12 votes. ' Mr. Gordon is believed to have Gore, .' Bean. Grips. Lfpren and three others, not including himself. Mr. Burdick is said to have at least nine of the 11 Eastern Oregon delegates and' in addition Ballagh. Lwis. Coffey and McParland. Mr. Kubli is believed to have Rich ardson, Hosford. Fuller and votes scat tered in the Willamette Valley and along the Coast, Mr. Sheldon's positive strength is not known, nor have any names been men tioned. He says he has some votes in Eastern Oregon and some in Multno mah. Feelers Are Seat Oat. The foregoing list of names is found ed on "information and belief." and is given as an indication of the way ru mors run. In no sense is it authentic. but it is approximately correct. Interest is centering in the Multno mah delegation. There are 13. lnclud lng Lofgren. Joint Representative. Of the 13. two are candidates. The way the shop talk runs, this is the way they are leaning: Lofgren is for Gordon. Coffey. Idle man. Lew If. McFarland are supposed to be Burdick supporters; Joseph Rich- srds is for Kubli and so is Hosford. Richards will go to Gordon when the latter thows six Multnomah votes for Gordon. Moore. Home and Smith are unplaced, but Jones' friends are try ing to bring them into the camp of the Marlon covnty candidate, and feel ers are sent out by other candidates. Speaking of feelers, Gordon tele graphed to an Eastern Oregon Repre sentative staling that he contemplated a tour in that section In behalf of his candidacy. He received an answer thai the trip would be a waste of time. Reed. Everett K., Rugby, Va. .oilier. julan !.. Luray. Vs. Cecil. KotMrt, Richmond. Va. Eastwood. Henry, Buffalo Junction. Never before, in the loner succession A of happy holidays, has Thanksgiving 1 4 come to Portland at a more significant j Ta season. Victory and peace are sauces IJ that will lend zest to the humblest ; dinner, and prosperity has decreed that 1 few festal repasts need be humble 1 41 although conserving- food that may nedj exported to feed the hungry millions rA of Europe. ' ,Kd So Thanksgiving comes this morning . to Oregon and Portland, with the cer- j A tainty that wheresoever it may knock Kd there will it find faces of gratitude. It F is true that here and elsewhere the 0 holiday guest will descry some window A with a gold star on the service f las- I JJj But ir the hearts within are quesuoneu. jr thanksgiving at the return of peace and 0 A WORLD AT PEACE Pastors . Makes This iav t At Once an Occasion of Great Joy and Great Gratitude To Be Fittingly Observed With Due Measure of Both SH1P CONTRACTS ASKED AD CLUB APPEALS TO EMER GEXCT FLEET CORPORATION. F. C. Knapp Hints That Government Has Treated Orders for Vessels as "Scraps' of Paper." Appeals-to the Emergency Fleet Cor poration to withdraw cancellation of ship contracts and to grant the privi lege to build on foreign contracts were made yesterday ,by the Portland Ad Clut?. F. C. Knapp, member of the Port Commission and a shipbuilder, sug gested that the Na.tion Is disregarding the sacred obligation of contracts. Robert H. Strong spoke on "Plans for Port Development" and Walter P. La Roche, City Attorney, outlined "The Proposed Plan to Remove Swan Island to Create a Turning. Basin for Ships." Marshall Pana was chairman. "The proposition that confronts" us today." said Mr. Knapp. "is where are we going to land f this Nation of ours continues on its present course. Great nations have spilled their blood in order that obligations of nations shall not be considered scraps of paper. The thousands of workers who have been rendered idle by cancellation of ship contracts may soon be In need of relief, unless they are given employment. We should be trying to build ships, not souphouses, along the Columbia River." Walter P. LaRoche told of the plans to dredge . the west channel of the river and transfer the land included in Swan Island to the 426 acres of Mock's bottom and the 700 acres of the west shore. Robert H. Strong described the work that has been done by the Port of Portland Commission, and said: "I am told thaj you can't gtft the spirit of port development where you can't ! smell the sea. 11 that is true, then we are laboring against something that was created for men to overcome. 1 am going to propose that we obtain the services of an engineer of established reputation, whose survey will not be influenced by any considerations of local matters, but -will be guided by what will be best for the foundations fnr a great shippfnjr business." the triumph of a righteous cause will be dominant, although the giving is never to be forgotten. In the churches congregations will celebrate with prayer and message and song. Pastors find before them the richest theme of the season, transcend ing even Christmas in the year of grade 1D1S, aa an inspiration to utter the truths for which thousands of American boys have died in a foreign land.
