13 11 III! CHGRESSM TALK OFFICIAL CASUALTY LIST United War Work Drive November 11 to 18 THE MORNING OKEGONIAN, FIUDAT, NOVEMBER 13, 1918. IA WITH COilSTITIffiS Chamberlain and McArthur Are Guests. INDUSTRIES ARE TOPICS Extended Discussion Follows Break fast Given by Directors of tlie , Chamber of Commerce. Kxtended discussion of after-the-war problems affecting Oregon industries followed the breakfast given by direc tors of the Chamber of Commerce yes terday, at which Senator Chamberlain and Representative McArthur were the gruests of honor. Problems pertaining to wood and steel shipbuilding, the lumber industry, woolen industry and the probable effect upon local indus tries throughout Oreron of the discon tinuance of work on war contracts were discussed. Those present at the table, and who participated in the conference, were: J-C. 1 Corbett, president; Guy Talbot, E. L. Thompson, J. P. Jaeger, W. J. Hof mann, Nathan Strauss, O. M. Clark. Frank B. Smith, J. T. Dousal, Sidney B. Vincent, E. T. Timms, Wllber E. Comas and W. I. B. Dodson, executive secre tary of the chamber. Congressmen Are Complimented. President Corbett complimented the members of the Oregon delegation for the part they have had in the legisla tive programme at Washington that contributed to the winning of the war. He expressed the hope that most vig orous vork be done throughout Oregon to restore industry to a stable condition on a peace basis, without disturbance due to the change. Confidence was expressed that the building of steel ships will continue steadily and the industry be found in a satisfactory condition. As to wood shipbuilding operations, it was the con sensus of opinion that it should be pro tected as far ajs legitimately possible, and that the people of the community, as well as the members of the Con gressional delegation, will have to be on the alert to do whatever may prop erly be done in this direction. Shipping Interests Considered. In connection with the consideration of shipping, Portland's plans for a ship company to operate here were dis cussed. The purpose to secure alloca tions of Government owned vessels for this service was announced, and the members of the delegation cave assur ance of doing everything in their power in oenan ot me interests of the etate and city. Pending tax legislation to ba taken up in Congress came in for considera tion, in view of rapid changes occur ring since the termination of the war. a development hardly believed possible so soon when the pending meaiun ws introduced, it is recognizd that with tne country returning to Deace enndi tions might be seriously embarrassed by the necessity of paying taxes and meeting the exactions of the measure as now framed. Amendment of the tax bill to avoid the impost of destructive burdens, it was agreed, should be the result or careful study before th measure becomes law. Tax BUI 'Will Take Long-. The members of Congress expressed the belief that the new bill could not be enacted, with all of the deliberations that will enforce the peace condition of the armistice to occupy the Congress, until alter tne nrst ot the new yea This, it is believed, will give oppor tunity for full discussion of all the new problems that win arise in the initial changes due to the termination of hos tilitiea. Jjesnaoiiity or securing a successor to Kobei t Pugan, as representative of tho 1'ortland Chamber of Commerce at Washington was discussed also. Mr liiisaii, who acted in this capacity for several months, resigned- to engage in military service. Pending the reor ganization of the Chamber of Com merce, his successor has not been se lected. Harry J. Brown has arted tern porarily anil is now discharging the duties or the place. STUB LINE TO BE BUILT Kino Miles of Railroad to Constitu tion Mine Probable. SrOKAXE, "Wash., Nov. 14.
