Up SMITHERS PLEADS GUILTY Special Agents Said to Have Made Only One Arrest In Southern Oregon in Two Months. MEDFORD. Or.. Oct. 18. (Special.) That Sergeant C. C. Tripplet and Ro- liceman Charles Smithers, of the State Police, who have been in Southern Ore son the past two months rounding u bootleKSers. have themselves been fre quent violators of the bone dry law, was a sensational development in in hearing today of l'oliceman Smithers. arrested in a local apartment house early this morning: charged with main talninir a Dublic nuisance. The raid on s-mithers' room was made by Poiice Cnief Timothy and Nisht Policeman Adams. The police interrupted ' hilarious drinklns party consisting of Smithers. a well-known Grants Pass mining man giving the name of John Brown, and two waitresses from the Hotel Medford. Triplett's home is in Springfield and Smithers is a. residen of Salem. Liquor Supply Increase. These two officers hire- been sta tioned in the Siskiyous for several months for the especial purpose of catching professional bootleggers smuggling whisky into Oregon from Calitornia. In view of last nights rata and developments it is averred are com ing Medford authorities understand why liquor in wholesale quantities has gotten by the officers the past few weeks. The smugglers in nearly every instance were later caught near Kose burg by Deputy Sheriff Hopkins, of ljouzlas County. Hundreds of quarts of whisky have been confiscated in Douglas County and about $21100 in fines Imposed at Koseburc in the past two weeks from the several wholesale automobile smug piers apprehended. Chief Timothy had been watching Triplett's room for a vk or more. He says that last Tues day night the same two young women and Triplett and Smithers were in the room, drinking. Orly One Arrest lat Month. Feeling'sure of his ground, the chief obtained a search warrant yesterday afternoon and shortly after midnight made the raid. Triplett was absent at Portland, for which city he left Wednesday with Deputy United States Marshal Tlchenor to take some oooi legger prisoners to the state metrop olis. In their entire two months service here Triplett and Smithers made dui one arrest of a man who had two quarts of whisky in his possession. Follow ing the raid County Prosecutor Roberts was summoned and ine prisoners were taken to his office, where they were clnselv auestior.ed. A warrant charging Triplett with maintaining a nuisance by giving away intoxicating liquors in his room has been sworn out and will be served when ho returns. The state authorities have been notified of the charges against Triplett and Smithers, and their immediate discharge from the state nniiro force is expected. It is claimed that the Chief of Police. of Ashland has also some interesting evidence relative to the conduct of Triplett and Smithers in Ashland. I.IQCOR CARGO REACHES SALEM Six Alleged Bootleggers and Slack ers En Route to Portland. EALEM. Or.. Oct. 13. (Special.) Six alleged bootleggers and two al leged slackers, with 500 quarts of bot tled in bond whisky valued at $4000, arrived here by automobile from South ern Oregon tonight under charge of Deputy United States Marshals J. O. Wilson and K. B. Tichenor. The men are under guard at the Marion Hotel and will leave for Portland in the morning. William Block, called "the million aire slacker." and George Williams, are the alleged draft evaders. Barney Pearlnian. George B. Goldie and Morris Minsky were arrested at Ashland, and George Lewis, Mrs. Christine Lewis and John Doe Farker were arrested at Rose burg. S. P. Brannon, who was shot In the shoulder at Roseburg. Is still in a hos pital therfe and will be taken to Port land later. ITALIANS TAKEN IX DOUGLAS Liquor Vendors Plead Guilty and Pay Fines at Roseburg. ROSEBL'RG. Oct. IS. (Special.) Two Itatiarfs. giving their names as Mike Yakovenikar and Pete.- Beregowsky, were arrested two miles south of the citv this morning on a charge of trans porting liquor. They had 100 quarts of whisky In their machine, wnicn tney alleged was taken on at Hornbrook. Yakovenikar, owner of the automo bile, was fined .'50 and his partner Iloo.
