12 TITE MORNING OREGOXIAX, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1918. F0M1N BOATS TO SHIP CREVVS HERE Sea Service Bureau Is Asked ,- to Supply Men. GENERAL SERRET IS FIRS Entire Steward's Force Aboard Standifcr Boat Kineo Recruited . Xrom Among Colored Race. Success attending the work of th Sea. Service Bureau of the United States Shipping Board in manning the newly constructed American vessels, all which are being sent away with delavs experienced on tho score crews, has resulted in the Portland office being requested to supply men for the French vessels being turned out bv the Foundation Company. Lieutenant Jones, of the Sea Service Bureau, said yesterday the first French carrier to which the office would un dertake to give a full complement of men mas the General Serret, which was launched September 4, and goes on he official trial trip this morning. The Nancy, Aviateur de Teriines. Belfor and General Gallieni are being fitted out and hulls for the Luneville, Gen eral Maunoury and Soissons remain on the ways. Thorndyke & Trenholm ere agents for the French vessels and. as ail of them are being loaded on this Coast as rapidly aa delivered, it is expected to be proven much more desirable to ship American crews than to wait for men to arrive from France. Preference expressed by men to be ahipped aboard the steamer Kineo, which the G. M. Standifer Construction Corporation built at its Vancouver wooden yard, was explained yesterday when Lieutenant Jonee announced that the entire steward's force was recruit ed from among colored men who had seen previous service on dining: cars of different railroads operating into Port land. The steward, two cooks, mess men ana pantrymen are of the same race and the well-known ability of col ored cooks, coupled with the fact they have been engaged in dining-car serv ice, has given rise to the expectation that the cuisine aboard the Kineo will be far above the average.
