16 THE MOHXIXG OREG ONIAX, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1918. TOLD TO STAY PUT Misunderstanding Widespread Explained Away. CALL MADE WHEN NEEDED Not All Are Qualified for Employ ment in Service Deemed Essential. There has been some misunderstand ing on one vital point in relation to workers in non-essential Industries," eaid Franklin T. Griffith, director ot the United States Public Service Re serve for Oregon, yesterday. "Simply because an industry has been declared non-essential does not mean that workers engaged In such industry are slackers, or that they should leave that employment to seek service in es sential industries. On the other hand, every worker is urged to remain at the task at which he Is employed until transferred to other work by the di rector of the United States employment eervice. Persons employed in non essential industries, who are not quali fied to perform work in essential pur suits may be allowed to remain where they are. They may be doing the most useful work of which they are capable right where they are at present. Director to Make Tranafera. "The State Advisory Board believes that men now engaged In non-essential industries, who are physically capable of working in war industries, ehould make the change at the earliest practicable date, but should do it through the director of the employ ment eervice. It Is desired that each worker not now engaged in war work send to the director of employment eervice a statement of his experience and qualifications, as a means of de termining in what place he would best serve, if a transfer is deemed advisable. "The advisory board has heard of a man 55 years of age, engaged in con ducting a small fruit and peanut stand, who is disabled for heavy work, but who upon reading that his industry was non-essential thought it necessary to abandon his business and seek some 6ort of work in the shipyards. Mistaken Idea Held. "Being a conscientious citizen the man in question felt that to continue his business would cause the odium of be ing considered a slacker. That is a mistaken idea. Considering that man's physical incapacity for heavy work, there would be no justification in caus ing the abandonment of the little busi ness he has established. "Employers engaged in non-essential industries are urged to retain their em ployes until called for by the employ ment service, so that the worker will be subjected to no hardship in the change from one occupation to another. Employes now engaged in non-essential operations are urged to remain until after their applications have been acted upon and definite call made for their services in war industries. "Employers in non-essential indus tries are willing to do everything that may be necessary to help the Govern ment. They make this statement al most without exception, but they do not wish to be made to suffer any unneces sary hardship in readjusting their in dustries to conditions enforced by the war. Naturally, many of them believe their industries are essential and en deavor to prove It." Prisoner Attempts Suicide. VANCOUVER, Wash.. Oct. 10. (Spe cial.) Charles Mehringer, an Austrian serving 30 days in jail on a charge of vagrancy, attempted to commit suicide last night. The rope broke and he was then transferred to the County Jail. Mehringer had attempted to break out of jail earlier in the night. Phone your want ads to The Orego nian. Main 7070, A 5095. MEETING NOTICES.
