SPECfALTRAIN URGED Improved Transportation Shipyards Wanted. to PRELIMINARY SURVEY HAD Railroad Men and Representatives of Employers Go Over Ground Between Hawthorne Bridge and St. Johns. Prospects of Improved transportation facilities for shipyards and other in dustries on the waterfront between Hawthorne bridge and St. Johns loomed up yesterday when a party of ship baildera and railroad men made a pre liminary survey of the situation. In dun tries now employing between 10,000 and 15,000 men would be affected by proposed changes. A special train. night and morning. to take care of the thousands or work ers who live In Portland and surround ing towns was the immediate object of the conference. It is known. The proposed train would run on the O.-W. R- A N. tracks along the waterfront to tit. Johns. In the party who made the survey were J. P. O'Brien. Federal manager of the O.-W. R. N. railway; Commis sioner Mann, Eric Hauser. of the Grant Smith-Porter company; F. C Knapp. of Peninsula Shipbuilding Company, and Frank W. Robinson, traffic man ager of the O.-W. R. & K. system. Industries which would be served by the proposed train include the Grant Smith-Porter company; Peninsula Ship building Company, Albina Engine & Machine Works, Peninsula Iron Works, Su Johns Iron Works and St. Johns Woolen Mills. Routing of the train through the Albina terminals presents problems that will be taken up by the con ferees. Speed would be- an essential of such a train. It is declared. More than 2400 of the &400 workers of the Grant Smith-Porter ship com pny come to work every morning from the East or West Side or from Oregon City. Beaverton and neighboring towns, according; to company officials. SHIPPING TERMINAL IS EYED Seattle to Ask Government to Erect $1,230,000 Plant. SEATTLE. Wash.. Aug. 20. Seattle' port commission, it was announced to day. has proposed to the Federal Gov ernment that the quartermasters de partment of the Army erect a S 1,250,000 hipping terminal on Harbor Island here immediately, with the understand ing that the commission will purchase the terminal after the war. The Commission has decided to ask Seattle voters, at an election Septem ber 10. to approve a proposal to issue f 1.250.000 in bonds to provide money for the proposed purchase if the Gov ernment approves the plan. "The proposition is for the Govern ment to lease the land and build the terminal and for the port to enter into an agreement to purchase the piers and warehouses after the war or at any time the Government desires to dispose of them." No one who came to Oaks Amuse ment Park yesterday afternoon and last night will ever forget it. A merrier, jollier, more good-natured crowd never assembled. There were thousands of G. A. R. veterans and thousands of their friends. Such visiting, such reunions, were never before held. And the picnic dinners on the grassy lawns and in the ivy clad arbors were . sights that brought joy to all. Twenty-three or more state societies were hosts to the veterans, and they acted in such an attentive and cordial man ner that every last one of the aged warriors will take home with him pleasant memories of Oregon's hos pitality.
