SCHOOL TO OPEN JUNE 24 About 150 Men Already Have Been Accepted and Limit Probably Will Be Held at 2 00 In structor Selected. Well-known Portland business men ribbed elbows yesterday with anxious draft eligribles in the throng of appli cants who flocked to the rooms of Colo nel John Leader, seeking to be recom mended for entrance to the TJniveristy of Oregon military training camp. About 130 men had been accepted for the camp. Colonel Leader announced, while the list of desirable eligibles who are sure of places will all but round out the ISO limit to which it is hoped the enrollment may be confined. Only authoritative and vigorous pressure will induce him to enlarge enrollment beyond this limit. Colonel Leader said. "In order to handle the men well," said Colonel Leader, "and give the In tensive individual training we plan, It is necessary to limit enrollment. I started with the idea of accepting only 100 applicants; now 150 is the limit, and we will certainly be urged to In crease this." The Colonel's reason for expecting urgent demand that late comers be fzlven a chance at the training was 'disclosed when he smilingly admitted he had already received between 350 and 400 applications. Late Comers Considered. Five approved application blanks were left in Portland with Captain John B. Hibbard. adjutant of the Ore gon Military Police, Morgan building. So far as Portland Is concerned, about the only chance a qualified citizen has to win enrollment for the military courses depends on how quickly he reaches Captain Hibbard's desk. It is an aim of the training camp to sift the "rookies' into three groups, the highest of which will have prefer ence, when desired, in recommendations to future officer training camps of the War Department. For men of draft age the training to be obtained at Eugene will insure early promotion to non-commissioned posts, if it does not open the way to an officers' training camp. For those who may intend, for the present, mere ly to work with Home Guard, Boy Scout or similar organizations the courses will prove valuable. The university training camp is mod eled after the famous Platteburg civil Jan camp. Colonel Leader yesterday sketched roughly the kinds of training to be given through the four weeks, as follows: Courses Are Outlined. First week Close-order drill, sema phore, judging distance, lectures, bomb ing, bayonet work. Second week Mathematics, skirmish ing, attack and defense, advance by rushes, field engineering, hasty en trenchments, topography mapping, tac tics, birdseye sketching, irst aid. Third week Permanent trenches, In telligence, field days, trench war. Fourth week Advanced problems and sub-caliber shooting. Four companies are to be organized, the segregations being according to qualifications. Company A Is to be composed of those most advanced in military knowledge, and others having had limited experience will go Into Company B. All enrollea ror advance ment to engineering, artillery and avia tion branches will be grouped In Com pany C. All not classified la these units will comprise Company D. One company will be housed In the university dormitories, one in the fra ternity houses, another in the gymna sium, while the fourth unit will have the fun of living under canvas. The training camp will open June 24 and is to last four weeks, conclud ing on July 20. Those accepted for the camp must report at Eugene not later than the evening of June 23. OUTDOOR STUNTS PLAN Y. Bf. C. A. INITIATES ENTERTAIN MENT FEATURE FOR SOLDIERS. CAMPUS CLEARED FOR ACTION Colonel Leader Estimates That 1200 Men Will Seek Training. TJXIVERSITT OF OREGOX. Eugene. June 14. (Special.) With 80 men already selected from among the 300 who have made application for admis sion to the university Summer training camp, which will open on the campus June 24, Colonel John Leader, com manding officer, today announced that the enrollment would be kept below the 300 mark and limited to' 200 If pos sible, in order to give the men benefit of as much Individual instruction as possible. All of the requirements for admission into the camp are being strictly en forced and only those applicants show ing exceptional qualifications for the work are being admitted at the present time. At the rate applications are coming In now Colonel Leader esti mates that there will be 1200 on file before the full number, is selected. A large percentage of the men already selected, as well as the greater portion of those making application, are from Portland and, while the names are being withheld until the enrollment is completed, it is understood that sev eral prominent young business and professional men of Portland are in cluded in the number. Besides the United States Army officer to be detailed to the encamp ment by the "War Department, Colonel Leader has announced the following appointment of staff officers for the Summer course: Captain W. F. G. Thacher, chief of staff; Captain K. W. Onthank, camp adjutant; Captain Dean Walker, instructor of bombing and bayonetting: Major Charles Comfort, head of officers' school and drill master; Lieutenant E. H. McAllster, in structor of engineering; Lieutenant W. D. Smith, instructor of topography; Lieutenant A. E. Caswell, quarter master. Cove Registers 10 Over 21 Years COVE, Or., June 14. (Special.) Portion of South Parkway to Be Used for Games and Programme on Sat urday Evenings Hereafter. Entertainment "a la Paris" has been planned for soldiers from Vancouver military post by the Y. M. C A. for this evening and for successive Satur day evenings during the Summer. Through action by the city adminis tration the park block at Jefferson and West Park streets has been obtained. The city will furnish lights, fencing and seats far 600. The 7. M. C. A. will arrange for the band music, pro gramme, decorations and refreshments. The band from the Albina Engine & Machine Works will furnish the music this evening. The programme proper will begin at 8:20 P. M. Mrs. Fred L. Olson will sing, Weber's Juvenile Orchestra will play. Carl Caignl will give musical numbers on his accordeon, Mrs. Herbert G. Reed will furnish a reading and Buck Dunn, of the Pantages circuit, will render several tenor solos. J. Frank Hennea y will sing and Assistant Manager Randall, of the Multnomah, will tell some stories. Preceding the programme volley ball, potato races and other games will be supervised in a cleared space by 40 young ladies from the Y. W. C. A. After the programme there will be a good old-fashioned "sing." The re freshments will be furnished by the women of the First Methodist Church. County was probably the first to en train its quota, the board there having sent a message yesterday noon to state draft headquarters telling that its men were being forwarded. Other distant boards of the state started their In ductees toward Portland last night. Puzzled Portland board .members yes terday called the office of Captain J. E. Culllson, state draft executive, to Inquire just how they can comply with the order to entrain their quotas "for Portland, Or." They were advised to put the men aboard streetcars, which will land them near the Benson school, if inclined ta follow orders so literally. When all rach the newly-estsbllsh'd Army training school there will be an enrollment of 309 men. Arrangement! to receive the men have been quit1 fully completed. Captain Robert A. Roos, of the United States Army, is tha officer In charge. BARTON DOING GOOD WORK Soldier-Writer Is Popular. With Boys In France. Frank W. Barton, former member of The Oregonian staff, is helping to kill off Kalserlsm with his pen as well as the sword In his dual role of soldier with the 18th Engineers, Railway, in France, and contributor to "The Spik- er" and "The Stars and Stripes." Mr. Barton has been editor of a breezy column in "The Splker," entitled "Private Musings of a Private." and his contributions have been greatly en joyed and appreciated by his fellow soldiers. In a letter from R. J. Kirk, associate editor of "The Spiker," much praise is given to Mr. Barton for his clever verse and paragraphing. The letter an nounces that Barton has been drafted by the "Stars and Stripes," which is the chief publication of the American soldiers in France.
