Scenes of the exciting days of '1 were recalled to the minds of scores ef Civil War veterans and their wives today as tbey 'stood or sat in automobllea and chairs beside the parade grounus ana saw the latest recruits to the National Army, more than 10.000 of them, pass In review in their honor. There were cheers and waving of handkerchiefs from the soldiers of yesterday for the fighters of today, and tears were not lacking as the veterans compared the lines of khaki marching by company front with the lines of blue a hall cen turv iko. A light rain, blown across the parade ground by a strong wind, threatened to mar the exhibition, but the rain stopped Just before the command to march, and for an hour the spectators remained In their positions as each company of the 11 battalions on review came up to the reviewing stand and marched off on double time- Considering their short period of training, the men made a remarkable howing. The lines were well kept and there were few breaks In "the precision of step as the men came up before Malor-General Greene and staff and National and state officers of the Grand Army of the Republic, who came from their encampment In Ta coma to attend. It was the first time recruits of less than a month's army standing had been reviewed under arms. As the last company passed the re viewing stand, those who passed first were drawing up In battalion formation on the south side of the parade ground and. at a signal, all 11 battalions came forward, a great mass of olive drab warriors, advancing In a wedge forma tion on either side of a platform before the reviewing stand from which Robert Lloyd, camp singing director, con ducted what is said to be the greatest chorus of voices ever gathered. There was a mighty roar from 10.000 voices as the new marching songs were sung, and then the soldier chorus gave for the veterans "The Battle Hymn of the Re public" and "Tenting Tonight on the Old Camp Ground." Such a sight never had been seen at Camp Lewis before. and officers and men who have been In camp for months Joined the old sol diers and their wives In cheering the men who have made such gTeat strides in Army life within three weeks. hen the last song was sung the men were marched by companies on double time back to their barracks. The Grand Army of the Republic delegates and their wives came to camp Just before noon by automobile and by train. The capacity of the T. W. C. A. Hostesa House was taxed to the utter most to feed the great crowd, and every available vehicle was pressed into serv ice to carry to the parade grounds those who were unable to walk. Between 3000 and 4000 aliens in the Army service at Camp Lewis will have the opportunity to become United States cltisens within the next two weeks without the usual legal formalities. It was announced today. Provision re cently was mitde in a law paased b Congress for giving citizenship to all soldiers whose loyalty is unquestioned. waiving the rive-year clause and first and aecond papers provisions.
