If the Maccabees of Oregon manase
to keep this state amor.g the eight
blithest In membership increase, they
can send a delegate to the National
fraternal congress, which meets In
Philadelphia next August. The big;
drive for new members which will de
cide whether or not Oregon will have
-a representative at the convention
started May 1 and will continue until
August 1.
J. W. Sherwood, of Portland, state
commander of the order, is the dele
gate whom the Uarcabees of Oregon
decided to send to the congress at their
convention Wednesday afternoon.
V. P. Marker, supreme commander
of the Maccabees, whose visit to Port
land is the occasion of the state con
vention, enjoyed a trip up the Colum
bia River Highway yesterday as Burst
of Mr. Sherwood and other high offi
cials of the Marcabee Lodge. Mr.
Marker addressed the various meetings
of the convention. Under his leader
ship the order expects to push its
membership up to 3,ouv before 111),
and the Oregon tents are going to be
among tha biggest membership in
crease rs in the country If they keep
up their present record
Sunday Mr. Markey will address the
mi mortal service which Is to be held
in memory of tha Maccabees who have
died during the past years. The serv
ice will be held In Orient Hall. East
Sixth and Alder streets.

been placed at the disposal of the
American Red Cross at Robstown. near
Corpus Chrlsti. by rltlxen of that com
munity, and the entire acreage I being
planted tn cotton by volunteer.
The land also will bo cultivated and
the cotton picked by volunteers and the
entire gross proceeds will go to the
Rd Cross. It la expected that 11000
