The small Government bucket dredge used for clearing channels in the Coquille and Coos rivers will finish the Coos River work on the north fork within a few days, and will then be taken to the Coquille River for the Summer, where shoals will be reduced and some new work between the county seat and Myrtle Point will be done. The channel in North Coos River is excavated to a depth of four feet at mean low water and the channel in the Coquille will again be deepened to its required 10 feet, providing naviga tion between Bandon and Coquille for small ocean steam and gas schooners. 11:19 11:2 Tides at Aatoria Tuesday. Bowles Declares No Expansion of Ills Ortsnlia tloa Will Be Necessary. "That just takes up the slack In our capacity." was the remark last night of Joseph R. Bowles, president of the Northwest Steel Company, on his re turn from Washington in discussing contracts for eight more 8800-ton steamers he closed for there last month with the Emergency Fleet Corporation. Mr. Bowles said he had not been In Washington for a time before start ing home, as he had business else- I where. He added that the eight con tracts would not result In any expan sion of the plant. Official notification reached the Al bina Engine & Machine Works yester day that rive more steamer contracts had been awarded the plant, thev to have a deadweight capacity of 3500 tons, and it la expected delivery will be made between February and June. 1919. Oria-inally the vessels were of 3800 tons, deadweight, but the Government made changes in the plans, "fining up" the hulls so the capacity Is less ened. Ths Albina yard started with six contracts from Norwegian and Danish shipowners, but before they I were ready the Government requisi tioned the ships. The first two car riers were of 3300 tons and the other four 3800 tons. Later the Govern ment awarded four contracts and they are tor 36uo-ton vessels under the mod ified plans, those reported yesterday Deing sister snips. .
