He went downtown and took a Turkish bath. About 9 o'clock at night he left the bath and rode home in his ma ll ine. Soon after getting home he prepared for bed. Having undressed, he went to a wmj dow, raised it, and started for bed. As he ' turned from the window he was taken with a pain in his chest and a general aching. Before he could get n bed he knew that he was a sick man. First he had a enm ana men a high fever. By 3 o'clock he had two physicians and a nurse, his fever was high, he was coughing up blood, and delirium was developing. He was a strong, vigorous man, never drank or smoked, and had in no way abused hirnself. In consequence, he was able to.-throw off his disease. After a few days of fever, delirium and splitting blood the disease left about as suddenly as it came, and two weeks later he was able to crawl out of doors for a little fresh air and sunshine. This was the second attack of pneu monia that he has had in three years. This was Just an ordinary case of pneu monia. As happens rather frequently. it developed in the- wake of a Turkish bath taken for the purpose of curing a cold. The only reason for referring to this case is to get the subject of pneumonia before my readers in terms of what is liable to happen to the healthiest of us. Pneumonia causes more deaths than any other disease. Of those who have It practically one-fourth die. It is especially hard on men in the prime of life. It is nearly always fatal in old people. What makes the situation worse is that the disease is getting worse. The modern treatment of pneumonia is no better in its results than the blood letting treatment of the days of George Washington. The highest priced skill of the most renowned city doctor gives no better results than the "yarbs" of the "yarb" doctors of Elbert Hubbard's McLean County days. . A lata discovery may be paving the way for better things. Pneumonia is known to be contagious. The cause Is not the mouth coccus found in nearly every mouth, but is a special pneumo- coccua which one person catches from another. Pneumonia is now a reportable and quarantinable disease in many cities. It is known that the well must keep away from the sick. - That the sputum of the sick must be destroyed and that the mouth of the patient during his sickness and for the first month of his convalescence must be washed with an antiseptic several times a cay. The best antiseptic Is a quinine preparation. The bacteriology of the disease Is being studied scientifically. Let us hops for material improvement in the near future. STATIONS. Never. in the history of this valley has Winter wheat given promise of better returns at a corresponding time of th season than It does now. Last Fall, owing to the late season, much grain was seeded in the dust and it seemed doubtful if all grain thus seeded would germinate. However, when rains did come they came copiously and the un usually warm Winter was further con ducive to growing grain.
