Another ancle to the war procramme. m which Coos and Curry counties have i een prominent Is in the liberal aub- -rlptlons to all the various funds. Bend especially, made records In promptness and liberality. North Bend waa the first city In Ores-on to trive Ita quota on the second liberty loan tarlrd her subscription with 110.000. This city afterwards raised jir Y. M. C. A. quota In three hours, and then went over and helped Marshfleld. Port Orford and other Curry County towns subscribed much over their quotas In tha second loan. Powers, a small com munity where 5 per cent of the In habitants are Iorr-ts, over-subscribed lis quota by 500 per cent. A number of loKRlnir camps In Coos County found every inhabitant a subscriber, and many took several' hundred dollars' worth. Camp One at Sumn.T. was not satisfied with havin: every man, woman and child in the camp holding a bond, but tooK Sip a subsequent col lection and bought a $50 bond for their Sunday school. The student body in the Coos County high schools made a high record In aiding the Y. M. C. A. drive, and every school In the county sub scribed 100 per cent more than re quested. liarshfleld had a tremendous task. It appeared .to meet the requirement of aiding the Government with $242,000 in the second liberty loan, but after a discouraging early campaign came through with a little over the amount. Municipalities were liberal in helping the Government, and the city of Marsh feld holds over $5000 worth of 4 per cent bonds. Coos County was sjnong the counties in Oregon which furnished many more men to the Army than were requi sitioned in the first draft, and there fore had no quota to make up. She has furnished more than 100 men for the Navy and probably 400 for the Army. Her 11th Coast Artillery Com pany, organized in Marshfleld, went away July 25 with a Ehortage of only five men, taking 105 privates and of ficers to Fort Stevens.' The county has men in nearly every department of the Army, and several are now In France with the Aviation Corps, others are in the regular Army, still others in Y. M. C. A. service, more in the Signal Corps, some with the Ambulance De partment. With a contribution to date of more than 500 men in service, the county has yet 1900 men of military age, drafted In the conscription. Curry County, when the first call came, owed the Government 21 men, but they have been furnished. That coun ty lost heavily through enlistments in the Navy, to which a great majority of t'ie boys, bred on the water, were nat'Jrally drawn. Port Orford fur nished in one consignment 11 men. who enlisted and took examination at Tort land. The county furnished several athletes and a number of musicians for the National Army. Food Output Ooubled. Food production and conservation havereceived quite as much attention as requested from the Government, and later on by Food Administrator Hoover. The signatures to the food conserva tion programme were almost unani mous in both Coos and Curry counties, although a very few were found in iso lated localities who refused to sign. These largely were people who claimed to he saving judiciously and therefore looked upon a pledge as an imposition. The extra production in Coos County could reasonably be placed at 50 per cent more than usual in some crops, potatoes in particular. The county raised the best crop, and the largest, in potatoes, in her history. Every ranch er has from a few hundred sacks to several thousand on hand. Beans were produced 'in the Coquille Valiley in al most an increased ratio of 100 per cent. GAIN BY. LINCOLN COUNTY IS GREAT ril.KHO. Lincoln er Sea Flekla aa4 Dalrylaa Asaaaa? thief ladaatrtro !arat la Oappllrd. Or, rec. Jl. (Special.) County has an area of 47.- acres, and a population of about oo. , Uric percentaae of Ita popula tion la divided between the towns of To ledo and Newport. Toledo la the county seat, and In the center of a rood dairy and stock country. Newport la fa mous as a beach resort and haa a large Summer population The principal activities of the county consist of deep-sea fishing along the Newport coast, the goat and sheep and cattle Industry, dairying and farming. Tha county la rich In undeveloped re sources. While the country Is broken In character, there are numerous rich valleys and bench land that Invite the homeseeker. promising good returns for labor and Improvement. All kinds of grasses do well here. Oats yield bountifully, and there Is scarcely anything In the vegetable line that does not give prolific yield. Fruits and berries attain fine perfection. Manx carloads of cattle are shipped yearly from Lincoln County. It is estimated that the Silet rerion alone has I S.nnn.nno.onn feet of timber Douglas fir predominates, but con servative estimates place the quantity of airplane spruce in the Siletz at 2.000.000,000 feet. The'aawmlll at To ledo has manufactured about 200,000 feet of airplane spruce and shipped two carloads of tent poles. A considerable revenue has been de rived by fishermen on Yaquina Bay the past season. The herring run in the hay. was profitable, the halibut schooners taking the entire catch for bait at goad -figures. In addition hun dreds of (Jollars' worth of oysters, clams, crabs and salmon have been hipped to Portland markets this year. JLincolt&County ha the largest an nual mohair pool of any county in the state. For the past six years. Includ ing 1917, the total number of pounds sold was 149,235, -nd for the same period there was realized by the grow ers the eum of $60,135.03. Lincoln County has four cream eries whose annual output of butter will aggregate more than 200,000 pounds. At the present price of but ter that would mean a net profit, less operating expenses, of $100,000 a year. This estimate does not Include the butter fat shipped to outside cream eries, which is estimated at 60,000 pounds annually. The ports of Toledo and Newport have voted $836,000 to improve the bar leading from Yaquina Bay. It is ex pected that a like sum will be appro priated by the general Government, which, when expended, would give a depth of 20 feet on 'he bar. The ports of Toledo and Newport have placed $150,000 worth of bonds on the market, and If sold they will proceed under su pervision of an engineer to improve the south Jetty. The export of tanbark from the Siletz this season amounted to 200 tons, valued at v3000. One hundred and fifty tons of Cas cara bark were shipped from Lincoln County this year, netting peelers ap proximately $25,000. Lincoln County sent her quota of 23 soiaiers unaer the selective draft, while more than twice that number volunteered. The county also raised J3S.000 for Liberty Bonds under the second call. The subscription to the Red Cross fund to date Is $1211.75. 3i H M ' "i ! i i 1 3 T a The CHANDLER H. J. McKeown, Proprietor. European Plan Rooms $1.00 per Day and Up.
