"William Greenfield, IS, employed in the wholesale department of Sherman, Clay & Co.. was severely bruised about the face yesterday afternoon when he thrust his head into the freight-elevator shaft to ascertain the position of the elevator. Ha was hit by the roof of the elevator, rising from below. He was taken to Bt. Vincent's Hospital. Damages of 87000 Asked. Damages amounting to $7000 are asked in a per sonal injury suit . filed yesterday by Xeah Zavin against A. Rossi for -alleged injuries sustained June 14, last, when Rossi's son drove his machine Into a car in which she was riding. All members are requested to pre pare to express their views on the sub ject. Editor-Educator Visits Portland. A. E. Winshlp, editor of the Journal of Education, and an educator of Na tional repute, was in Portland yester day on his way south after having spent some time in the Pacific North west. Mr. Winshlp called upon Su perintendent Alderman, of the city schools, an old friend. Synagogue to Give Plat. "Chanu ca," or the feast of dedication, will be concluded with appropriate exercises at the Sixth-Street Synagogue on Sun day evening at 7 o'clock. In connec tion with the programme will be fea tured a comic play in which cast will be Included some of Portland's talented young folks. Passenger Agent in Citt. C. B. Benjamin, general passenger agent of the Canadian Paclfio Ocean Services, Limited, trans-Pacific lines, of Mon treal, was in Portland yesterday, call Ing upon passenger men with head quarters here. Mr. Benjamin expects to reach Chicago for Christmas. Traffic Manager Here. Charles S, Fee, passenger traffio manager for the Southern Paclfio Company, of San Fran cisco, reached the city last night from Puget Sound on his way back to head quarters. He will be in this territory several days. He is at the Portland Hotel. Benefit Sale Arranged. Henry Hipsher. a Crook County farmer resid ing near Prinevllle, yesterday pleaded guilty to being a slacker and was sen tenced by United States Judge Bean to serve 15 days in the County Jail. At the expiration of his sentence, Hipsher will be certified to the Gov ernment for military service and will be among the first to be selected under the next draft. When arrested, Hipsher was uncertain as to his correct age, although he insisted he was 33 years old. Deputy United States Attorney Goldstein communicated with Hipsher's father at Chico and was informed the young man was only 28 fears of age. His arrest followed. Glasses to Be Returned. Informa tion received by the State Council of Defense. 488 Northwestern Bank build ing, from George F. Porter, chief of section, co-operation with states. Coun cil of National Defense, Washington, D. C, says the Navy Department has decided to tag all binoculars, spy glasses and telescopes donated to the Navy Department, and at the end of the war to return the glasses to the donors, provided, of course, they have not been destroyed or lost. They are, therefore, only being loaned and they will come back to the donors with the added historical Interest of having seen duty in the great war. De Yarmond Funeral to Be Held Tomorrow. Funeral services for Lon De Yarmond. who died Wednesday after an illness of three years, will be held at 1 o'clock tomorrow from Fin ley's chapel. Rev. W. G. Eliot, of the Unitarian Church, will officiate. The services will be under the direction of the Masons and they will have full charge at the crematorium. Mr. De Yarmond was former president, secre tary and treasurer of Multnomah Typo graphical Union and past master of Mount Tabor Lodge. A. F. and A. M. Birds Will Be Topic. "Bird Boxes and Feeding Stations" will be the sub ject of an illustrated talk by A. L. Campbell at the Saturday night meet ing of the Audubon Bird Club in the story hour room. Central Library. Mr. Campbell will show, besides the plo tures, a complete line of the latest de signs in bird houses and Winter feed ing boxes and shelves. All those who are Interested In the protection of birds are urged to attend, particularly the manual training teachers. Citt to Have Service Flag. The city is to have a service flag. Ar rangements are being made for the raising somewhere about the City Hall of a large banner with 75 stars, rep resenting the number of city employes who have enlisted. An ordinance pro viding for the purchase of the flag will be eent to the City Council Wednes day. The enlistments will include those from all branches of the city service. Alibis Are Established. Detectives yesterday released Jessie Bowland, a colored woman, and Emmett Pittman, of 230H Larrabee street, also colored, who were arrested Wednesday night in the course of an investigation into the death of Prince Menelik, a colored man who was found dead in his room. Both succeeded in establishing satisfactory alibis, and convinced the detectives that they had no connection with Menelik's death. Finances Subject of Talk. At the weekly meeting of the City Club, to be held this noon at the Hotel Oregon, Edgar H. Sensenich, cashier of the Northwestern National Bank, will speak on the subject, "How to Read the Financial Page of the Newspapers," It is the belief of the members of the bureau of industrial and port de velopment that this subject will be of keen interest to the City Club's members. Dr. DeBusk to Address Civic league "The Child in the Institution" will be the subject of an address by Dr. B. W. DeBusk, of the University of Ore gon, before the Oregon Civic League at ts weekly luncheon Saturday in the Multnomah Hotel. The annual meeting and election of officers of the league will be held on Tuesday night in the Central Library, Hill Students to Hear Piatt. John Piatt, who has just returned from France, where he served nine months in the ambulance service, will address the students at Hill Military Academy thla morning at 10:30 on his experiences at the front. Ervin McPrerson Missing. Mrs. A. MoFherson reported to the police yes terday that her 14-year-old son, Ervin, has been missing from her home at 6S0 East Salmon street since last Tues day. The boy is described as weighing 100 pounds and wearing a gray suit and cap, and leather leggings. Dancing In new Moose Hall postponed until further notice. Adv. Germans Forced to Move. MARSHFIELD, Or., Dec. 13. (Spe cial.) The family of Gus Bromser, a German, who was working at the Powers logging camps, were ousted from their home near the Englewood radio station, under the order that aliens may not reside within half a mile of any Government wireless sta tion. Mrs. Bromser had four children, and, when obliged to vacate her home, went to friends at Bunker Hill. Mr. Bromser is selling his home and furni ture and will move to Ashland. GAMP LEWIS CALLS Many Will Board Special for v Brief Visit Tomorrow. MAYOR TO INVITE SOLDIERS Portland People Will Assure Boys of Hearty Welcome Here When They Go North to Attend Mili tary and Riding Pageant. Portland business men, officials and others will do the double work Satur day of patronizing the big benefit mili tary pageant to be staged by the sol diers at Camp Lewis, American Lake, and extending to the soldiers an invita tion to come to Portland to spend their Saturdays and Sundays. A special train Saturday morning will carry several cars of persons Intent on seeing the bis" show, visiting the camp and inviting the soldier boys to Port land. The Oregon Hotel Association, which arranged for the Saturday special, re ported yesterday that several hundred persona have expressed a desire to make the trip. Mayor Baker has been appointed chairman of a committee to meet Brigadier-General Irons, camp commandant, and extend an invitation to the boys to visit Bartland on their days. off. Arrangements will be made for special trains to travel between the camp and Portland. The delegation making the trip possi bly may include Governor Withycombe. Members of the City Council and rep resentatives of various civic organiza tions will be aboard. On the special train also will be many going for the express purpose of seeing the big show and the camp or visiting relatives or friends. The Chamber of Commerce Is listing reservationaor a special train to the camp on Sunday for the second day of the pageant. If 100 reservations are made, this train will bo run. Reserva tions for Sunday should be sent to the Chamber of Commerce. The Saturday special will leave the Union Depot at 7:30 A M., arriving in Camp Lewis at 11:30 A. M. It will be sidetracked at the camp along with dining car service and other accommo dations until 5:45 P. M., when the return trip will be made, arriving In Portland at 10 P. M. On account of the lack of accommodations at the camp the plan of the party remaining over for the Sunday doings has been aban doned. The military pageant will consist of large and spectacular drills and exhibi tions of horsemanship by e-pert riders now at the camp from all over the West, including Pendleton and Cheyenne. The affair Is being given for the benefit of the troops. ANNA HELD WILL APPEAR Visit to Forts at Mouth of Columbia River Promised. Anna Held, whose war relief work is widely known, will visit the LowerrCo. lumbia district Sunday and sing and recite for the soldiers at the forts In Oregon and Washington at the mouth of the Columbia. Miss Held has been asked to appear Sunday night at As toria, and F. M. Hamlin, of that city, has guaranteed the performance. In a telegram to W. T. Pangle, man ager of the Helltg, yesterday, plans for Misa Held's visits to the forts were revealed. "Colonel Hills, in command of the Lower Columbia, has placed Government boat at Misa Held's dis posal upon her arrival, for purpose of visiting different ports aa social guest," the telegram read. Miss Held opened her Portland en gagement last night and will give a popular matinee today and the regular matinee tomorrow. Good Morning ! CHINESE MURDER CLEARED "China Sam" Divulges Name of Man Who Killed rtoseburjf Chinaman. ROSEBURO, Or., Dec. 18. (Special.) That "murder will out was illus trated here yesterday 'when an aged Chinaman, known as "China Sam," In formed the officers that he had knowl edge of the man responsible for the murder of a Chinaman in this city about two years ago. The viottm was killed during the night and his body was found the following day by offi cers. The murderer went to Portland, then to Seattle, and later located in Salem, where he died a few weeks ago. "China Sam" said he was afraid to give out the informatior before for fear he would meet a fate similar to his mur dered countryman. EARLY MAILING IS URGED Postmaster Myers Announces Sched ule for Christmas Deliveries. The early mailing of Christmas pack ages sent by parcel poet is urged by Postmaster Myers to insure their de livery on Christmas day. According to a schedule announced yesterday at the postofflce, the following dates should be observed in the mailing of paroels if their delivery on Christmas day is to be reasonably assured: Par cels to points east of Chicago and the Southern states, December 15; parcels WOMEN DEMAND "SMOKES" Kelly Butte Problem Passed On by Mayor to Other Officials. Here's one of the hard ones Mayor Baker now has to face. City Health Officer Parrlsh reported yesterday that the women oonflnad in the city's de tention home for women at Kelly Butte demand the right to smoke. Dr. Parrish says the great majority of these women are addicted to the to bacco habit and insist that they be provided with cigarettes and pipe to bacco. Some, he says, roll their own while others either smoke pipes or fancy cigarettes. The Mayor "passed the buck" back to Dr. Parrlsh and Chief of Police Johnson.
