Portland will co-operate In making the benefit military pageant at, Camp lwis Saturday and Sunday a big af fair. As a result of an appeal to Mayor Baker yesterday by soldiers In charge of arrangements for the affair he set the ball rolling for a big attendance from Portland. Arrangements were made for a spe cial train Saturday morning to return (Saturday night and if sufficient res ervations can be obtained a special will be run on Sunday also. The Mayor issued a proclamation yesterday urging all citizens of Portland who can, to attend the affair on one or both of the epecial days. The exhibitions are to be for the benefit of the 35,000 troops Stationed at the camp. Mayor Urges (Itlxen. to G. The Mayor's proclamation follows: The People of Portland have been invited to attend a great military exhibition at Camp Xewle, American Lake, Waah., Saturday and unday, December 15 and 16, for tha benefit of the 35,000 troops stationed there. A bis repreaentatlon from Portland should attend this affair, which will be for a good pur pose and ot a spectacular. Inspiring- and ed ucational nature. 1 urge all citizens who can to visit the camp on one of the two days. The exhibition will be under the auaplces OI the Auxiliary or Kemount Depot, Wo. 831. and wlll.be participated In by all separate organisations of the division. It has been authorized by the commandant of the camp and will Include exhibition drills of all kinds and exhibitions in horsemanship by many of the most expert horsemen of the world, who have taken part in the great con tests at Pendleton, Miles City, Cheyenne. California, Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver and other places. A visit to this great army camp of the Northwest is inspiring. The attractions for Saturday and Sunday, together with duced rates offered by the ralfroada, afford an excellent opportunity. The Oregon State Hotel Association knade arrangements for the special train on Saturday. The Chamber of Commerce has taken up the task of ar ' ranging for a special Sunday .morning. All Sunday reservations should be made at once through the Chamber of Com merce. One hundred reservations are necessary to obtain a special train. Hotel Men Charter Special. The Oregon State Hotel Men's As sociation has agreed to guarantee 100 passengers for the Saturday special. The fare will be J6.66 for the round trip. The train will leave at 7:30 A. M. from the Union Station over the O.-W. R. & N. and will reach Camp Lewis at 11 A. M. Returning, the train will start from the camp at 5:45 P. M., reaching Portland four hours later. Tickets will be on sale at the hotels cmd the Chamber of Commerce today, or they may be procured from the railroad. Dining cars are to be attached to the trains and are to be in service through out the day. Lunches may be carried if desired. While the train is parked at the camp the engine will be kept attached, so that heat may be furnlBhed and a com fortable place provided for those who desire to rest. Tickets will be good, only for the return trip aboard the special. Owing to the absence of accommodations at the camp, it would be useless for Port landers to stay longer than the one day. The excursion is receiving the strong backing of Portland business men and Officials. Soldier Like Rose City. Seattle is barred to soldiers from the camp, and Tacoma has all the busi ness that it can attend to. Last Satur day the men at Camp Lewis guaranteed a. special train to Portland in order to spend Sunday in a city where they know they are not only welcome, but which their officers have no objection to their visiting. Portland liked the compliment, and the visit to the camp next Saturday rwill not only be a return call, but . every man and woman will be fur ' xiished a badge guaranteeing a cordial welcome and fair treatment at any time the officers or men desire to come liere. It is probable that arrangements will be made to bring a special to Portland from the North each Saturday. En route to Camp Lewis a commit tee of prominent men will he picked out to wait on the commanding officer end assure him of the Intentions of Portland. This city is said to have made a great hit with soldiers because no merchant, hotel or restaurant has ever raised prices of goods the men wanted to buy. Camp Worth Visiting. . Portland residents should go to Camp Lewis and see what is being done there In the way of making an army, as well as to see the big Wild West show that Se being put on there, according to Ralph R. Duniway, a local attorney, who has just returned from the camp after a few days' visit there. : "It Is wonderful what the Govern ment Is doing there," said Mr. Ouniway. 'I was surprised and every one else who has seen it has been surprised at what is going on. r. Calvin S. White, former state health officer, has charge of an important branch of the medical work there. He took me through the hospital and other buildings and Bhowed me what has been accom plished. "It seems to me that the people of Portland should take a keener interest in the camp, as it is certainly a won derful thing to see. The business that Is being transacted there Ab wonderful and the features providM for camp life, for health and. recreation are arreat." LIQUOR VIOLATORS JAILED Four Men Arrested In Few Honrs Dy Special Officers. Special Agent Scott and Deputy Sheriff Stipe early yesterday arrested four alleged offenders against the pro hibition law. Gus Katz was taken at Third and Washington streets. He is alleged to have had one full quart and a part of another quart of liquor in his possession. Warren, veteran Northwest and Alaska police official, took up his duties as Seattle's chief of police today, vice C. L. Beck ingham, who resigned yesterday at the request of Mayor Gill. "I am taking office assured of a free hand in re-arranging the force," War ren said. He added that he would not know for several days whether he would make any extensive changes. Meanwhile a citizens' committee of 25 continued Its efforts to have Mayor Gill impeached for alleged failure to work for the removal of an order bar ring Camp Lewis soldiers from visiting here on account of vice conditlona said to exist here. "If the City Council votes to impeach me, I will not attack the proceedings In court, but will ask for an immediate trial and will conduct my own case," Gill asserted last night. "What we want to do is to lift the ban from Seattle and do it as quickly as possible," Chie Warren declared in a statement issued today. A negro "red cap" at the Union Sta tion was lugging a suitcase containing 25 bottles of liquor when the two of ficers hove( into view. Phil Nolte was picked up at Tenth and Morrison streets. The officers say they found 116 bottles of liquor in his room. Bootlegging charges were filed against the quartet in the District Court. HOLIDAY RATES ANNOUNCED Railroads to Reduce Fares for Two Week-Ends. Holiday week-end rates are an nounced to Clatsop Beach and to the Washington beaches at the mouth of the Columbia, by, the Spokane, Port land & Seattle Railway, in connection with the O.-W. R. & N. Special fares of one and one-third rates for the round trip are offered for both the Christmas and New Year week-ends. Sale dates are fixed for December 22, 23, 24, 29, 30 and 31. Return limits are the Wednesday following the date of sale, 'which would be December 26, for Christmas trippers, and January 2 for the excursionists who want to spend New Tear's at the seaside. The reduced rates Include Portland, and all points on the S., P. & S. Astoria line as far west as Klatskanie. WASHINGTON, Dec 12. New House committee assignments were approved today at separate caucuses of Demo crats and Republicans subject to ac ceptance at the regular session to morrow. The meeting of the Republicans was prolonged by an effort to recommend seven members with Miss Rankin as chairman of the special House com mittee on suffrage, instead of the six allotted by the majority to the minor' ity. The plan, which would have pre clpltated a fight on the floor, was finally abandoned. Miss Rankin w named the Ranking Republican on the committee. The Democrats chose Rep resentative Raker, of California, chair man of this committee. Representative Shirley, of Kentucky, was selected by the . Democrats as chairman of the House appropriations committee to succeed Representative Fitzgerald, who has resigned, and Rep resentative Sims, of Tennessee, was chosen for the chairmanship of the House interstate commerce committee in place of Representative Adamson, of Georgia. The House tomorrow will take up the seating of S. W. Beakes, Democrat, of Ann Arbor, Mich., over Representative Mark R. Bacon, of Wyandotte, Republl can. There 1s little party interest Id the contest and the seating of Beakea was forecast by leaders. MR. WEST IS OPTIMISTIC Mill Men Say Facilities Ample for Working Spruce Here. Efforts are being made to arrange for local sawmills to do the work on Oregon spruce for airplane stock in stead of having it done -East. At a spe cial meeting of some of the men in terested yesterday encouraging reports were received, including one by tele graph from Oswald West, who said he had called with Senators Chamber lain and McNary upon the Air Craft Board on this subject and had met with success. Mr. West is in Washing ton on various matters, including this one. Local mill men declare there is am pie capacity for handling this work here. When fitting dead wood around the stern post on hull 23, in the G. M. Standifer Construction Corporation shipyards here at 3:30 o'clock today, Jacob Petty fell 10 feet after slipping and losing his balance. Fellow-workmen carried nim to the first-aid room, and Dr. R. D. Wlswall was called. Mr. Petty soon ' regained consciousness, but it was found he had suffered a fractured cheek bone. AIRCRAFT LOSSE SHEAVY Germany Reports Destruction of 2 89 Planes and Balloons in November. BERLIN, via London, Dec 12. Air craft losses by the entente allies in the month of November totaled 22 cap tive balloons and 205 airplanes, the German general staff announced today. The German losses in aerial battles, the statement adds, were 60 airplanes and two captive balloons. LUMBER PLANT ENLARGED North. Bend Company Plans $160, 000 Improvement. UORTH BEND, Or, Dec. 12. (Spe cial.) The Buehner Lumber Company has asked the City Council to vacate a strip of the waterfront road 10 feet wide by 2183 feet long, to permit the company to lnstal a sidetrack to the Southern Pacific system, connecting the main, line with a mew planing mllL The Tiffin Flusher Company will furnish the two street flushing ma chines to be added to the city's Street Cleaning Bureau. The City Council yes terday awarded a contract for this type of machines, the cost of the two to be $13,950. The Northwest Auto Company sub mitted a lower bid for the machines, but City Commissioner Bigelow, who has charge of the Street Cleaning Bu reau, considered the Tiffin proposition best because the Northwest Company machines have not been tried out lo cally. The Northwest company's bid was $13,800. PROSPERITY IS TOO GREAT License on Streetcar Advertising May Be Boosted to $1000. Tha eetnpany handling the street, car advertising franchise is making too much money, according to City Commissioner Keilahe, Accordingly, h presented an ordinance to the City Council yesterday boosting tha license on this business from $256 a year to $1000 a Year.
