Alfred Powers has been made Secre tary of Social Welfare in the Exten sion Division of the University to suc ceed Ben Williams, son of Colonel J. M. Williams, recently commissioned as First Lieutenant in the United States Army. Mr. Powers came to the University of Oregon as a student from the Uni versity of Oklahoma in 1907, and was graduated in 1910. He taught two years in the public schools at Florence before his election as Superintendent of Schools at Oakland. Ridgefield Couple Are Married. RIDGEFIELD, Wash., July 22. (Spe cial.) The high-pressure area, off the British Columbia coast still persists as well as thd low-pressure area throughout Central Cali fornia and the Southern Plateau region. Pressure is also high over the Upper Missis sippi Valley and along the Atlantic coast and low over Southern Canada with a read ing of 29.44 Inches at Edmonton. Temperatures continue above normal in Centra California and over the Rocky Jvlountaln region generally. Scattered thunder Etorms were reported over central and east ern portions of the country, with rain ac companying in the Upper and Middle Mis sissippi and Ohio Valleys. Portland temperature at 5 P. M. was six degrees below normal. The conditions are favorable for fair weather in this vicinity during: the. next '2 hours, with northerly winds. FORECASTS. Portland and vicinity Fair; moderate northerly winds. Oregon Fair; cooler east portion; moder ate northerly winds. Washington Fair; moderate northerly Winds. Idaho Fair; cooler southwest portion.
