14 THE HICliA-Sii Cli-il-SlAX, MONDAY, JAXTTAHY 8, 1917. NICKEL TAKER DIES RICH STREETCAR COSDCCTOR, 73, LEAVES FORTUXB OP 500,0O0. Man M'lio AlTrays Worked and SaTed little Suspected of Wealth Death , Conn While at Post. CHICAGO, Jan. 7. Henry Torborg filed here Saturday leaving a fortune of $500,000, most of it accumulated during- the last 40 years while conductor on a streetcar of the Blue Island ave nue line. He was 73 years old and died while at work. Between the age of 14 and 19 Tor torg saved ?500. In the next 10 years, always saving money, he worked on sugar plantations along the Gulf of Jlexico. He then came to Chicago and invested his savings in real estate. He Sot a Job with the Btreetcar company, continued to save and to invest in out lying property. The growth of the city to a popula tion of 2,500,000 tells the story of the growth of his fortune, but few persons of the millions who have handed their nickels over to him dreamed that the methodical old man had all this wealth. Two sons inherit the fortune. Torborg had a number of sayings: "Good spenders may be good fel lows, but a bank account needs no friends. "Never pay for having work done that you can do yourself. "Make your vacations pile up your dividend. "The man who stops work Js like the old mill out of use; he falls to pieces." The last tit of philosophy is said to account for his sticking to a Job which for many years he had ceased to need as an Income producer. AMTSEMTCNTS. BAKER 5 THEATER roadway & Morrison.
