With the exception of a belated advance In call money to 4 per cent, the highest rate for thia form of accommodation pi nee December, 1014, most developments and advices of a marked char acter over the holiday were accepted as distinctly favorable. United States Steel served more than any other one stock to stabilize the market, be ing freely absorbed in blocks of 1000 to S20O shares at StP,4 to 87", closing: at a mere fraction under its best in the face of con tinuous profit-taking. Seel's contribution of about 60,000 shares represented approximate ly 1 'J per cent of the day's business. Some of the recently weak munitions and rquipments were better by 1 to 3 points. Shipping- stocks were in steady demand. United Fruit making an extreme gain of more than 3 points. There was renewal of last month's Inquiry for the better-known stocks and a fair degree of activity and strength was shown by Pears-Roebuck, Woolworth and May Department Stores. Transcontinental shares led the railway division. Northwestern, Canadian Pacific, Roo and "Union Pacific advances being l to almost 3 points. ALL LINES ARE STEADY MODERATES RUN OF" STOCK AT NORTH PORTLASD. Buyers Again Pay $8.53 and SS.OO for Best Grade of Hog Cattle Unchanged. There was a steady market for all classes of livestock yesterday, with a moderate demand and a run of 14 loads. Attention was given chiefly to the hog division. Monday's prices were again In effect, buyers paying $8.55 and JS.BO for top quality. Cattle sales were made within the previous range of prices and sheep also sold at former quotations. Receipts were lua cattle, four calves, 362 hogs and 1248 sheep. Shippers were: With cattle Lydston & Pickett, Wash ington, Idaho, two cars; G. A. CHICAGO, July S. Bullish cable advices lifted the wheat market today, but the. ef fect was nearly wined out later, owln chiefly to the smallnesa of the decrease in the United States visible supply. Quotations closed nervous, 4c to H&c net higher, with July at $1.03 and September (1.05. Corn finished 4&c to c up, oats oft a 16th to ct and provisions unchanged to 15c higher. Wheat prices were highest at the start, and were nearly the lowest at the ciose. Distinct weakness In the market developed when the United States visible supply was posted, showing a decrease of only 19,000 bushels in seven days, whereas last year at the corresponding time the falling off was 2.246,000 bushels. On the decline commission-house buying revived, and a rally was in progress as the session came to an end. Corn displayed considerable firmness esplte ideal weather for the growing crop. Oat were weak. Provisions rose to the highest prices yet this season and held firmly notwithstanding that trade was light .and that hog values were on the decline. CITY ACCEPTS LAND OFFER Ordinanco Passed Provides That $1000 Sliall Be Added to Fund. The City Council yesterday passed an ordinance accepting the offer of the Ladd estate xor free use of the 160 acre tract near Heed College for a golf links. The measure will not go into effect for 30 days during which time the referendum may be invoked by petition if anyone wishes to contest the ordinance. The ordinance provides that the offer of the Ladd estate for use of the ground for five years at no cost to the city shall be accepted and that the city shall appropriate $4000 next year to add to the $3000 raised by subscription. which money Khali be expended in the buildina: of the links. Tt has been 'the GARBAGE PLAN ISSUE AGAIN Collection System to Be Worked Out Tli rough Taxation. A 'municipal free garbage collection system is to be an issue again at the next city election. The City Council yesterday adopted a recommendation of Commissioner Daly that City Attorney LaKoche prepare a proposed charter amendment to be submitted to the voters. The action was taken on recommen dation of the Multnomah Council of the Parent-Teacher Association. It is proposed to have a. general garbage col lection system operated by the city and paid for from general taxation. iSuch a measure was on the ballot at the last city election and was defeated.
