THE 3IORNIXG OEEGOXIAX, TUESDAY, APRTL 11, 1916. "3 PASTORS HME ROW; D R. LAN E R E -ELECTED President of Methodist Minis ters' Association Resigns at Stormy Meeting. MEW VOTE SETTLES FUSS Charges md Counter-Charges Filing Freely, but Peace Is Restored Finally Resolution Against JCnitlng 'Advocates' Adopted. "If any of you think I wanted to be president bad. enougrh to use fraud, he can take his little old one-horse Metho . dlst Ministers' Association and go to thunder with It." This was the way Dr. T. W. Lane, elected president of the association two weeks, ago summed up his feeling re garding the holding of the office. He ended by resigning, asking that the election be declared null and void and that another election be held. After considerable controversy and the expression of varying views on the subject. Dr. Lane's request was granted, and a new election held, resulting in his obtaining every one of the S3 votes cast. Rev. R. E. Smith, of Sunnyside, was elected vice-president, and Rev. A. "Vereide, of the Vancouver-Avenue Norwegian-Danish Church, secretary-treasurer. Stormy Session Is Held. The meeting held yesterday morning In the Sunday school temple of the First Methodist Church was a stormy three hours' session. Personalities, near-personalities, arguments, discus sions and at times general confusion characterized the gathering. Dr. Lane had been elected two weeks previous, succeeding Dr. C. O. McCul loch. of the Epworth Church. After the meeting rumors had been scattered. It was stated, that the election had not been legal, inasmuch as that all who voted had not been entitled to cast a ballot. Dr. Lane said yesterday that he did not have to be president, but that he did have to preserve his integ rity as a man and therefore he de manded another election. Dr. F. L. Loveland, of the First Church, suggested that Dr. Lane be de clared president by acclamation and that he receive the unanimous backing of the ministers. "I object; if there was a doubt, there will always be," said Dr. Lane, "and I don't want what may some time be regarded as a white-washing." Rev. Dr. Hoadley said: "If there were objections made regarding that elec tion, why weren't they made then and there? We are not only 'going to thun der,' we are going to lightning." Rev. A. F. Cramer, former secretary treasurer, who served again in that capacity while the votes were being taken yesterday, declared that at the former meeting 47 votes were cast. Of these Si had paid dues and 13 should not have been cast. Many of the mem bers immediately hurried forward and paid their dues. Rev. Mr. Clne Won't Be Silenced. Rev. C. B. Cllne wanted to know "why all the hoo-hoo and boo-hoo?" He wanted to be shown. Who had made the fuss and intimations of ille gality? Dr. Loveland stood up and tried to interpose. "I won't be hushed by you or any one else." declared Dr. Cllne. Rev. C. C. Rarick, of Central Church, paid that the members or others who had carried the story to outsiders and had informed the newspapers that there was trouble and had implied fraud, should bo reprimanded. Rev. G-. A. Feese. who spoke several times, said "it was an illegal ballot and now we are setting ourselves .-straight." Only those who were eligible according to the constitution voted and peace was restored just before the ad journment for luncheon. Dr. Cline presented two memorials to be sent to the general conference. The first provided for the return of the retired bishops to take their places in the conference from which they came and to put them on the retired preach ers' fund instead of paying them half their former salary. Rev. J. H. Hopkins quoted the laws of Methodism since the days of Asbury. Dr. Cline said the present plan is caste distinction and creates dissatisfaction, therefore he urged his resolution. The motion was lost, 20 to 21. The second resolution was that the general conference be memorialized to discontinue the present areal Episcopal supervision, returning to the time-honored general Episcopal supervision. The resolution was lost. Dr. W. W. Young-son, of Rose City Park, offered a resolution against the uniting of all the "Advocates" under one head. This carried and the resolu tion will be presented to the general conference. ELECTORAL QUESTION UP HARVEY WELLS PILES CANDIDACY WITH REPTTBLICAJT SLOGAN. State Insurance Commissioner Sara He Will Withdraw If Ineligible By Reason of Position. SALEM, Or.. April 10. (Special.) Pledging himself to vote in the elec toral college for the choice of Oregon Republicans for President and "Vice President, if elected, Harvey "Wells, State Insurance Commissioner, today filed declaration of candidacy for elector with Secretary of State Olcott. His ballot slogan is "I stand for Re publicanism, preparedness and prosper ity." The candidacy of Mr. Wells for Prest. dential elector has raised the question of his eligibility to qualify for the position if elected, unless he should resign as insurance commissioner. Under the Oregon constitution, no per son holding a lucrative office or ap pointment under the United States or .state, is eligible to hold another lucra tive office at the same time. I. H. Van Winkle, first assistant At torney-General, said today that, with out having looked into the matter carefully, he believed Mr. Wells would have to resign as insurance commis sioner before he could qualify as Presi dential elector. "If it can be determined without doubt that I cannot act as Presidential elector unless I resign first as Insur ance Commissioner," said Commis sioner Wells, tonight. "I will withdraw my declaration of candidacy." NAUGHTY CUPID MAY DRESS Ashland Women Ave Aroused by Work of Art on Fountain. ASHLAND, Or., April 10. (Special.) ' This naughty little figure is devoid of raiment, and the women urge that the artistic work of the sculptor should be at least arrayed in evening dress. In other words, they want the statue draped with a fig leaf, if nothing more. The women have presented a signed protest to the Springs Commission and threaten to carry the matter before the City Council unless Cupid dons a new Spring suit. GAIN SHOWN IN OFFICE COMMISSIONER OK CORPORATIONS FIXES REPORT. Mr. Scbnldermaii Snows Receipts of 97400 Over Last 'Tear nnd Ei ' prases of 93700 Less. SALEM. Or., April 10. (Special.) With a decrease in expenses of the de partment amounting to $3737.39, and an Increase in receipts totaling ,7864.38 for the nine months of the current fiscal year ending March 31, as com pared with the corresponding period of the preceding year, an exceptional showing from the standpoint of econ omy is made by Corporation Commis sioner Schulderman. Mr. Schulderman filed a comparative report of the work of his office with Governor Wlthy- combe today. The report shows that the gross re ceipts of the corporation department for July, 1915, to March. 1916, inclusive. were $116,303.20, while for the corre sponding period of the year before the receipts totaled $108,938.82. "This increase," Commissioner Schul derman advises the Governor, "is in spite of the fact that the collection of annual fees from banks was transferred in the interim from the corporation de partment to the banking department. These bank fees amounted to nearly $5000 a year." The department's disbursements for expenses for the July, 1915, to March, 1916, period were $12,287.44. as com pared with $16,024.83 for the corre sponding period of the year before.
