Portland for Holidays.
Colonel C. H. Martin. United Statea
Army, who has been stationed with his
command, the Eighteenth Infantry, at
Douglas. Arl for the last several
months, baa returned to Portland with
Mrs. Martin to pass the holidays here
and renew old acquaintances. They
are at the Hotel Mallory and expect
to remain about two weeka.
Prior to leaving Portland, about a
year ago. Colonel Martin waa In com
mand of the Third Infantry, Oregon
National Guard, by special detail from
the War Department. Colonel Martin

WASHINGTON, Dec 20. Closure of
foreign banks in Mexico City and de
struction of. Mexican credit are pre--dieted
in official communications to
day to the State Department from some
of the European Embassies, should
Carranza carry out his intention forci
bly to compel the banks to redeem their
notes in gold Immediately when pre
sented by the government.
Strong representations have beea
made to the State Department by the
Embassies.
Representations against closing
banks unable to pay bills of exchange
in gold were sent today by the State
Department to J. R. Silllman for trans
mission to Carranza. The chief bank
affected is the National Bank of Mex
ico, a concern whose stock is held
chiefly by French investors.
