"It la very contagious." he continued.
"It should not be treated carelessly, as
It Is dangerous because of the com
pllcationa which follow. Pneumonia
and tuberculosis often camp on the
trail ot the grip. I would advise folk
to shun It Ilk smallpox, for it is easily
spread,"
Mora. Grip Kood Than Colds.
Some physicians report little Increase
of colds and influenza, (or grip) over
normal this year. In spite of the ad
mirable weather for the development
of th disease. Such a one Is not Dr.
a. W. Tamlesle. -
"In 14 years of practice, in Portland
I have never found grip more preva
lent." asserted Dr. Tamlesle yester
day. "There are more sever symptoms
to be found this year and I know few
families which hare escaped a touch
of the disease. I find mora grip than
colds."
Dr. J. C Zanr reports many cases of
bad colds and grip which have oome
under bis observation, but thinks the
number about normal. He finds nu
merous bronchial complications. The
majority of cases are mild and do not
require th attention ot physicians, ha
points Out.
Inclement Weather Blamed.
The Inclement weather and winds
are blamed by most physicians for the
epidemic Tbe heavy east winds that
recently prevailed are mainly respon
sible, they say. Warm Chinook winds
are expected to break up the siege ot
grip and colds.
"Grip ts the cause of much throat
and middle ear trouble," raid Dr. Ban
ner R. Brooke yesterday, "and may lead
to abscess of the brain and other
alarming complications. The Influenza
bacillus s active In spreading It, and
there is a great deal of It about at
present"
City Health Officer 5t B. Marcellus
has not noted a serious increase of
colds and grip this Fall and Winter.
Cases are not reported to the health
office, and ho said yesterday that he
thought tbe epidemic was not un
usual.
Dr. O. yillor Babbitt, specialist In
eye. ear. nose and throat disease, finds
many cases where grip has led to com
plications.
Ear Abates. Prevalence Noted.
"I have noticed that the most preva
lent complication this year has been the
ear abscess." said Dr. Babbitt yester
day. "There have been many double
abscesses and tbe ear seem the prin
cipal points of attack. Grip changes
in its after-symptoms almost every
year. I have noticed.
"Last year it was followed with
throat complications, of which there
are only few mis year. Before that
stomach and tonsils were attacked.
Though I have seen many serious
cases, there have been no fatalities."
Though many teachers are confined
to their homes and some classrooms
are badly decimated by the epidemic
of grip, there have been no schools
or classrooms closed on account of It,
according to City School Superintend
ent Alderman. The Couch School Is
on of the worst affected by the epi
demic, he asserted.

A wave of the grip, assuming epi
demic proportions upon me campus of
the Oregon Agricultural College, has
cauaed a notice to be Issued from the
president's office thst me college would
close for the annual holiday recess
tomorrow night, a day and a half ear
lier than waa planned.
It is estimated that the number of
cases' ranges from 150 to. 200. Most
of me students who go home will leave
on speicai trains tomorrow night, and
few activities are promised for the
holiday season on me campus. The
dormitory women who will remain In
the city during the vacation will live
in the three sorority houses.

cial.) Emll Ranstedt. a soldier, has
filed suit for divorce from his wife
because she hit him on the head with '
a hairbrush and locked him In his room
until released by neighbors. Th cou
ple were married in Seattle September
15. 1913, and her first nam is Ida,.
Mr. Randstedt alleged that his wife
deserted him, and he also alleges cruel
and Inhuman treatment. There are no
property rights affected by the desired
decree.

WOODLAND, Wash., Dec. 20. (Spe
cial.) The Hidgefield basketball teams
of boys and E'r's came over on Fri
day night and both were defeated by
the Woodland teams, the boys winnlnir
by the score of 26 to 3. and the girls
winning over the Ridtrefield girls by
6 to 4. Last night the boys' team went
to Sara and defeated the Sara boys by
19 to 15. The latter game was tied.
