The stale's principal witness la the arson trial of Mrs. Daisy Miller has disappeared. "Hilly" Cross, whose testimony. It Is said, was largely responsible for the Indictment of Mrs. Miller, has dropped from slsht and left a bole in the case of the state. The absence of Cross became appar ent for the first time yesterday. Cross was In I'endleton shortly before Che trial bcxan. and was under subpena to sppear for the trial. lie failed to come. A telecram to the I'endleton herlff disclosed the fact that Cross bad departed, supposedly for Texas. Mrs. Miller in chsreed with burning her ho-me on Thirteenth street to ob tain 11200 Insurance money. Cross. It la alleged, was llvlnc In tbe same houaa at the same time the fire oc curred. (Spe cial.) Mr. Frederick Frldley. aged 78. died Isst nlcht at the home of Thomas Powell In this city. Mr. Krldley. while a native of Switzerland, was one of the oldest settlers in Lewis River Valley, and was active on his home stead, which he acquired about 23 years ago. until about five years ago, when a sudden attack to bis eyesight rendered him totally blind, since which time he has made his home with bis old friend, Mr. Do well. Pendleton to Decorate Streets. PENDLETON. Or.. Nov. 2. (Spe cial.) I'endleton business men in an Informal meeting today decided to deco rate the streets for the holiday sea son. The Pacific Power & Light Com pany have agreed to put up light streamers, and a carload or so evergreen trees will be brought from Mem ham. The work of doi-oratirur will start at once and they will keep the gala festival appearance until New Year'a. ART WORK SOON RELEASED Ashland Benefactors to Secure Ital ian Fair Exhibits. ASHLAND. Or, Nov. 29. (Special.) G. S. Butler and D. Perozzie. bene factors of Lithia Park in this city, have contracted for a Frilli master piece from the exposition grounds in San Francisco with which to adorn park surroundings. The cost will be $3000, and the work of art will be re leased from the Italian exhibit Decem ber 6. G. S. Butler, in behalf of his step father, Jacob Thompson, a pioneer of Southern Oregon of 1847, has also pur chased a statue of Abraham Lincoln al a cost of $2500, at present in the Ital ian exhibit at San Francisco, which will be released in order to be placed in the old settlers' cabin.
