BIG REDUCTION IN OVERDRAFTS
Evil Largely Eliminated by Efforts of Con
troller of Currency.
WASHINGTON, D. C Aug. 2. Tho Con
troller of the Currency has in th past few
day received the following communications
from different aectlona of the country relat
ing to the matter of overdrafts:
The Superintendent of Batiks of the State
of Oregon, under date of July 23. 1915,
writes from Salem ss follows:
"It Is gratifying to note the substantial
reduction made in overdrafts during the past
year. The overdraft in State Banks have
decreased 30S.77O.42, or 33 per cent; over
draft In National Bank have decreased
$104,057, or 09 per cent
"It appears thst your efforts to eliminate
tho evil have not been in vain snd this
office -will continue to co-operate with you
to secure further reductions."
A nntlonsl bsnk examiner, writing from
Dallas, Tex., in a letter dated July 27, 1915,
ay:
"In further connection with the overdraft
practice, beg to advise thst I have just com
pleted a trip of several week In my dis
trict and found only one bank with an over
draft and that bank had on account of
recent date for 2 cent. It I a uncommon
to find a bank now with overdraft as It
wss In tho psst to find one without them.
"Some of th bsnkers who objected the
most strenuously t discontinuing the prsc.
tic or now making th statement thst It
wss th best thing that could have hap
pened in that respecL The letters sent out
by you relating thereto was of untold value
in eliminating th practice and baa been re
sorted to in a majority of esse where the
best results hsve been obtained."
Prior to th promulgation by th Con
troller of tba Currency, of bis order on tbe
subject of overdraft", the overdraft of th
National bank of Texa exceeded tho of
any. other State In th Union, amounting at
the time of th December 3L 101. call to
$1,781,664.
The president of a largo National bank In
Oklahoma, under date of July 30, 1913,
writes as follows:
Can but commend you for your famou
overdraft order and st tho sams time csll
your attention to th fact that although a
number of th bsnkers seemed to think It
impossible to conform to the requirement
of your order, many of the directors adopted
resolutions favoring your order and doubt
less as a direct result of th same, overdrafts
in banks in this country have been de
creased. "On every hand I hear word of praise
in reference to tho order, where many
months ago I heard criticism."
