When the dredge Titan ends her toll
this week in the slip at Municipal Dock
No. 1. which extends from the harbor
Una to Front street and has a least
depth of IS feet, she will be prepared
for another1 siege across the river, as
ha is to dig iu front of Montgomery
dock, where a cement-gravel formation
Is said to resist the equipment of ordi
nary suction diggers.
There is from 20 to II feet of water
available a short distance from the
face of the dock, but it shoals at the
harbor line. Since the Government en
gineers have prepared a blueprint of a
survey made recently between the Burn-eide-street
bridge and the flour mill,
a better idea has been gained of the
amount of material that must be re
moved to obtain a uniform depth of 3S
feet.

Central American Pilot Chart.
The Hydrographic Service of the
Navy Department is issuing, through
its branch office In the Custom-House,
the first pilot chart for the seas of
Central America which has been pub
lished. With the opening of the Pan
ama Canal the concentration of vessel
routes to this limited area demanded
a more detailed description of those
waters than the North Atlantic and
North Pacific pilot charts show, built
as they are for more exteaaive areas.
This chart is a compilation of data
gathered from the earliest days of the
service according to a system laid
down by Lieutenant Maury, pioneer
hydrographcr and meteorologist, and
represents a labor of over half a cen
tury of observations by sea officers of
the world's maritime nations. f
