t THE MORNING OREGONIAN, WEDNESDAT. MAY 20. 21 PLANT TAKEN OVER Valley Creamery Association in New Hands. TO REMAIN INDEPENDENT TaJk of Combination in City Butter Trade Denied by T. S. Town send Berry Market Weak ens Hop Contracts. Tl'ith the reorganization of the Northwest Butter & Produce Company complete, W. E. Kly. the new manager of the company, took Yharg-o of the business yesterday. Mr. Ely fays the affairs the association will be carried on Independently, as heretofore, but beyond this he has outlined no policy. He is well satisfied with the prospects before the company. la commenting on statements made In some of the papers of the existence of a butter trust, T. fc. Townsend said yester day: "if there is such a thins as a butter com bine here, I am ignorant of the fact. I cannot understand why, if such is the case, the Government does not take up the matter and make an investigation. I am willing to contribute both my time and money In helping to ferret out this question and bring out the absolute facts. "However, I seriously doubt whether such a combine exists and am Inclined to be lieve that whoever is giving this informa tion to the public Is dome it for the pur pose of gaining a little trade for themselves by pulling down the reputation of other in dividuals and establishing a wrong belief in the minds of dealers and consumers against repirtable houses. "The creamery business is one of many l'.-aks and money can be lost rapidly if it is not conducted carefully and conservatively along business lines. It is possible - that some of the creamerymen who have been unsuccessful are feeling sore and are trying to throw the blame for their failure on other creamerymen who have worked care fully and conservatively for many years and who have been more successful. WASHINGTON HOPS ARE CONTRACTED I'ourteen Cents Paid by McXeff for New mod Old Crop. A lot of ISO bales of Western Washington hops was bought yesterday by McNeff Bros, at 14 cents. This deal leaves only 450 bales of last year's crop unsold in the northern state. The same firm contracted for S0.OOO - pounds of 1014 Washingtons at 14 cents. - Total beer sales in the United States In April, as unofficially reported, show a de crease of about 3 per cent as compared with the same month last year. For the 12 months ended March 31, 1914, beer sales have been 60,303,713 barrels, as against 64. 7G,5S1 barrels in the 12 months ended March 31, 1913, a net Increase of 2,117.137 barrels, or 3 1-S per cent. For the year end ed March 31. 1913. the sales were 1,410,407 barrels more than In the preceding 12 months. A. change has occurred in the member ship of the oldest hop firm in the United States, Charles Green Bralnard Son & Co., of Waterville. 1 T. I. T. Bralnard retire from the firm, which will be conducted by his so a, C. G. Bralnard. SUGAR MARKET HAS MORE STRENGTH Indications Are for Advancing Tricea I'reu Now On. The sugar market has an upward tend ency. Raws were firmer in the East yes terday and the-prospects -are for an" carry advance hi refined sugar, here. In com menting on the situation, an Eastern au thority says: "Refloers having secured a good aggre gate of raws were less disposed to follow the rise, except where -the offerings came in handy to-fill -gaps. They are waiting for the active movement of granulated to work off meltings, the withdrawals being gener ally disappointing in view of the recent ex citement. However, a jtpell of hot weather will change the situation and in the mean time the conditions have been favorable for the--fruit crop, which promises to be large and Insure a big preserving inquiry thii Summer.' MORE MONEY IS ASK. KB FOR EGGS In .Vim e Quarters 21 Ms Cents Is Obtained. Chickens Sell Well. The esse market was quoted ' firmer on the street. The general quotation was IM cents, case count, but in some quarters haif a cent better was obtained. Candling op e rax Ions show an Increased shrinkage and selects command a full cent premium. There was a better feeling in the poultry market, but prices were no higher. Hens sold readily at 15(rl5 cents and broilers a 25 cents. Ducks were moved with. di. hculty. The butter market was steady at the old price for prints. Cubes offered at 23 to 24 cents, according to quality. BERRVAKKET WtS LATE IN DA Bet PrWe Am Obtained la Forenoon. First Red Onions Received. The strawberry market was firm enough a tha opening, but weakened before the dap was over. The best Oregons sold early in the day at $1.00 to $1.00, but in the afternoon $1.25 was the ruling price. On the early morning farmers" market prices were for small and $1.75(32 for large boxes. Receipts of California berries were small and they cleaned up at 75 cents to $1.25. A car of red onions arrived from Stock ton, the first of the season, and sold at 2.7ojp3 a sack. Vegetable receipts were light, but the street carried a sufficient supply of most kinds. SMALL INQUIRY FROM CALIFORNIA No Demand for Wheat From Other Quarters. Prices Nominal. The wheat market was a dull affair. Prices , were unchanged, but were more or less nominal. California is showing a little interest, but otherwise there was no de mand. There was some talk of contracting but no business was reported during the day. ' The barley and oats markets were also quiet. Local receipts, in cars, were reported by the Merchants' Exchange as follows: " - Wheat Barley Flour Oats Ha. Monday ...... is t ij i? CLOSES ALMOST AT TOP lioeaes From Insect Pest Ma j- Amount to 3Iany Millions of Bushels. Corn and Oats Also Score Material Gains. CHICAGO, May 19. The cloao of wheat was strong at nearly th topmoet point reached, to Hili4c above laat night's. Corn made a net sain of Sc to c and oats 4 6 c to lc In Drovlsious the out come was unchanged to 5c down. Uneasiness over crop damage from Hes sian fly carried the wheat market harjly higher. It was conceded that the loss cer tainly amounted to many million bushels and there seemed no veiling what the tinal outcome would be. Pit offerings were light and buying orders the rule. Afterward the wheat market receded temporarily, a con sequence of the Government weekly crop report proving bearish. Later Hessian fly damage was reported from Piua, O. The close was strong. Corn ascended with wheat. Fine weather and easier cables were ignored. Increase of country offerings clieckd the advance. The close, though, was firm. Firmness of other grain influenced oats. So also did the fact that a Canadian cargo here had failed to reach contract grade. Provisions ruled steady with hogs, but trade was meager. The leading futures ranged as follows: WHEAT. Open. Hich.
