Tttr TOT?XTXO OREfiONTAN, FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 1914. 21 MOHAIR OPENS FIRM First Pool Sale of Year Is Made at Good Price. HIGHEST BID 28 CENTS Thirty Thousand Pounds of LIncoln County Hair Bought by Norton. Valley Growers Have Bull ish Ideas of Market. The sale of the Eddyvllle mohair pool means the opening of the 1914 Oregon market on a firm basis. As. ai reported on this page yesterday, the pool brought 28 cents. There were 30,000 pounds of mo hair in the lot, and the successful bidder was II. F. Norton & Co.. of this city. The next highest bid for the pool was 2714 cents. The growers at the sale first rejected 11 the bids and proposed to postpone the sale, but later in the day they decided to accept the Norton bid, and the hair was delivered to the buyer and will be shipped to this city ait once. A number of other pools .are being formed, but it is noticeable that the goatralsers avre not disposed to press sales and many f them will probably dispose of their clips on the open market. It is reported that some buying has been done at other points nt a price even better than was paid at Eddyvllle. The Texas mohair market, which has teen inactive for the past two months, is gain beginning to show signs of life. Several small lots have been sold there at around ST to 28 cen.ts. I .a at year at this time the bulk of the Texas clip had been contracted for before shearing began, but so far this season, only one or two good stzedT clips have changed hands and some of theso purchases have been speculative. Types of the new Texas clip are in the hands of Eastern dealers. The Soston market continues Inactive. The demand is of a hand-to-mouth charac ter, as usual at the opening of the season, and prices are more or less nominal. Com menting on the foreign markets, the Com mercial Bulletin says; "Bradford spinners are not buying at all heavily at the .moment. According to latest advices they are studiously keeping out of the market, presumably with an eye to allowing- the new clips at the Cape and Con stantinople to reach! the market with as little excitement as possible. "Advices from Constantinople report lit tle or no business on old stock. The new hair is just beginning to drift Into the up country markets. Inasmuch as the peasants are In need of ready money, it is ex pected that the new clip will be bought quickly. "At the Cape the new clip is now coming forward with some freedom. It is reported in good condition and seems likely to be held for more money than was paid a year ago. One lot of fancy Summer kids is re ported the have realized 27d. An increase of about 2000 bales in the Cape clip is pre dicted, of which about one-third Is ex pected to be kids. The demand for alpaca in the Liverpool market Is very healthy." DEMAND FOR SPOT HOPS IS SLACK Inquiry for the New Crop Has Also Sub sided foreign Conditions. Negotiations are on for a few' small lots f hops, and it Is probable that before the month is ended, several cars will be shipped, but in other respects the market is very quiet. Most of the dealers are without or ders. The m demand for contracts has also, flattened out, although it is probable some business might be done at less than the for mer quoted price. English hop dealers' circulars of latest date say: Wild. Neame & Co. There is a fair en quiry for this period of the year. Values are unaltered at their recent level. Thornton & Manger General trade is dull, but enough business passes to keep prices steady. Offers a little under current values have been declined. There Is no change in foreign advices. Manger & Henley There Is no change to report in our market during the past week, the business doing being restricted to actual requirements only. Values remain unchanged. W. H. and H. Le May The market is quiet, and when business is done, prices are In favor of buyers. Worcester Business on the Worcester market keeps quiet, the supply on offer be ing very limited. In the course of cutting down growers find aT great many weakly plants, and this with the moderate stocks on hand, induces them to ask for full rates, while buyers will only do business when come concession is made. WHEAT IS SOT OFFERED FOR PALE Deadlock Exists in Market Trade in Other Llues Quiet. Offerings of wheat at prevailing prices have practically closed and buyers are un willing yet to raise their bids. This has brought trading nearly to a standstill. Holders In the country maintain an inde pendent attitude, and as there is some gen eral demand, the undertone of the market continues firm. Operations in other departments of the grain market were on a small scale. Local receipts, in cars, were reported by the Merchants" Exchange as follows: Wheat. Bar. Fir. Oats. Two clips, one of 100.000 pounds and another of 150,000 pounds, were sold .in San Francisco at prices that were 2o and 3c a round above the figures paid for similar descriptions last ' year. BUTTER PRICES WELL MAINTAINED Local Market Not Yet Affected by Decline at Seattle. The butter market Is holding Its own. The trade has been sufficient so far to han dle the make and local print prices will probably be maintained ror the present. The feeattle market has declined to the Portland level and this may affect the surplus that the local creameries may produce. Egg prices are steady and unchanged. Buying for storage is lighter, but Front street dealers are stil enabled to get 18 "4 and 19 cents case count. Candled eggs are bringing 20 cents. The poultry market was not so firm as earlier- in the week. Hvns sold at 1S&1S& cents. STOCK TRADE SMALL Wall-Street Market Is Given Consistent Support.' SHORTS VERY CAUTIOUS European Exchanges More Disturbed Over Mexican' Crisis Than New York-London Holders Are lyree Sellers Bonds Irregular. . NEW YORK. April 23. Speculative opera tions were on a small scale today. The market received the same consistent sup port which has been accorded on recent days, and the shorts did not venture upon extensive operations. Neither speculators nor investors were eager to buy stocks. In view of the Mexican situation. European markets apparently were more disturbed over the Mexican crisis than was the New York Exchange. It was estimated that 30.000 shares were unloaded here for foreign account. Canadian Pacific, Erie and Kansas & Texas preferred were sold most heavily by London. This selling, together with a decline in American stocks in Lon don, caused a general scaling down of Quo tations in the early market, but later losses were reco-ered. The late decline was Influenced by a sharp break iu Smelting, which was raided on the announcement that the company had suspended operations in its Mexican plants. The stock broke over 5 points. Mexican Petroleum and Southern Pacific also were affected by fears of losses on their prop erty tn Mexico. Canadian Pacific resumed its prolonged decline. It fell 3 points to the lowest figure In four years. Time money and mercantile paper were firmer. Foreign exchange rates rose to the year's high point, and there was talk of gold exports to Paris. Such ehlpments. It was said, were contingent only upon the willingness of French bankers to pay a premium such as was paid during the pre vious movement of gold to Paris. Bonds were irregular with a continuance of the recent active selling of New Y'ork state and city Issues. Total sales, par value, $2,350,000. LAST PRICES UNSETTLED Millers in Northwest Are Active Buyers, but This Helps Values Only Temporarily Corn Af fected by Argentine Weatner. CHICAGO, April S3. Rains that put a stop to danger of drouth lu the greater part of the country west of the Missouri River had a bearish effect today on the wheat market here. Prices closed unsettled 4 t o under last night. Corn finished I-I6 off to g up. oats down hi to c and pro visions at 2 to 15 cents decline. Although a strong rally took: place in wheat about the middle of the session on account of millers in the North-western dis trict being; active buyers, the market later suffered another setback. Clearing weather in Argentina tended to easo corn at the outset, but the market later developed strength, the May option in particular. A feature of the trading was th. active buying of May and the selling of July on the part of the several elevator companies. Receipts her. were small and there was a big falling off in Argentine shipments for tho week. - Unlike corn, oats failed to display power to recover. Rainy weather, with more pre dicted, acted as a weight on the market. Higher prices for hogs brought only tem porary firmness In provisions. On all the hard spots In the market packers aetxed the chance to dispose of holdings. The leading futures ranged as follows: WHEAT. Open. Hifrh. Low. Close.
