Till: MORNING OREGOXIAX, THURSDAY, AlMsIX SURPLUS Ofl HAND More Potatoes Remain Than Can Be Shipped. PRICES WORKING DOWN Small Chance of Improvement In Market During Remainder of Sea son Acreage In Oregon Will Be Less Tlian Last Year's. The potato season is drawins to a close In a manner not very satisfactory to farm ers who are still holding stock. It was thought last Fall that the Spring months might discloso a shortage somewhere along the line that would cause the market to improve, but Instead of that prices have been gradually sagging. Dealers now be lieve the outlook is hopeless for thf re maining months of the season. There Is still a large surplus on hand and there la ndication of a better outlet being found. In fact, it looks as if shipments would di .mlnish rather than increase from now on. A few cars are going out to points in the Southwest, but the demand from that quar ter for Oregon potatoes is by no means keen. Advices from Arizona are that re ceivers in that section are getting liberal offerings from Sonora and other Mexican districts. As for the California market, it ' la in bad shape. At Pan Francisco prices are demoralized, according to advices re ceived yesterday, and it is said it would take four wc.ks to clean up the stock on hana, even If outside supplies were not being sent In. Puget Sound continues to ship frt;ly to San Francisco and river stock is also being forced on the market, as tbo time foi cheap new potatoes is close at hand. Local buyers are paying 40 to 45 cents in the country for the few cars they need. It is estimated there are stil 100 cars of ship ping potatoes left in this state and less than two months of the shipping season remains. The Oregon potato acreage, it is believed, .will be considerably less than last year'. According to California reports the acreage in that state is large and Browing condi tions for the crop are ideal. Only a severe frost or other adverse weather in California in the neztt few weeks could help the Ore gon market for old potatoes. m MILt BUYING OF WOOL IS SLOWER Pressing Xeetfe of Manufacturers Covered Previously Prices Still Firm. Trading In old-clip wool at Boston slowed down in the past week, according to ad vices Just received. Various elements have combined to exert an adverse influence up on trading. The business has been rather dull because manufacturers previously had covered pretty well their pressing needs and they are loth to operate' ahead at the prevailing level or prices: the conditions in the goods market have had their share in retarding sales. The limited transactions recorded have been at the top prices recently Quoted, as a rule, both for the domestic and the foreign sup plies involved. The shipments for the period Indicate a good consumption, they being more than double those for the same time last year. While foreign wools naturally continue to constitute the bulk of business, with domestic supplies at a minimum, the ac tivity of thes shows a further decrease. The fact that the aggregate of transfers for the week is estimated to be under 2.0CO.000 pounds is - evidence of the decline. More cautious buying has resulted from -the high prices and the fact that the duplicate de mand for heavyweight woolen goods has been somewhat disappointing. The demand, such as It Is, involves Buenos Ayrea and Montevideo wools, as well as supplies from Australia and New Zealand, the Cape and East India. HOP C ONTRACTS HEM AT IS CENTS No New Business Reported In Old Crop. England's Imports. The turn of the month brought no im provement In the hop business, so far as . the demand for spots are concerned. The inquiry for contracts continues good, and 15 cents offered to responsible growers. Imports of hops into Great Britain dur- : ing the month of February last, contrary to general expectation. were exceptionally small, being only 2559 cwt. from the United States and 1918 cwt. from other countries, or a total of 4177 cwt. During the same month, exports amounted to 2474 cwt.; thus leaving net Imports of only 20t3 cwt. as acainst 12.D23 cwt. for February, 1013. and S!X ewt. for February. 1912. Total Imports, less exports, for the months of September to February last, both Inclusive, were 200,---S cwt. as against 208,427 cwt. during the corresponding period one year ago. and 72, 6U cwt. two years ago. The above-mentioned net imports of 2U0.228 cwt. plus the 1913 English crop of 255.B41 cwt. Indicate 'that on February . 28 last Great Britain was still short of her estimated annual require ments of 600,000 cwt. to the extent of 144, J31 cwt.. or about S7.000 American bales. The quantity Imported from the United States during the months of September to February last, both inclusive, was 159,671 owt., equivalent to about 97,000 bales. TOP TRICES ASKED FOR WHEAT Trading Is am Small -le at all Feints in Northwest. Wheat trading was limited "in all parts f the Northwest. Holders asked extreme prices, and where buying was necessary, the buyers had to come well up to seller's terms. Local prices were unchanged. Hay was quoted weaker by some of the dealers. Alfalfa, in particular, was quoted easy, as offerings were on & liberal scale, and with grass plentiful, the demand was less. Local receipts, in cars, were reported by the Merchants' Exchange as follows: Wheat Barley Flour Oats Hay S'Onuflv 34 :; to 3 9 Tuosdy :: R i .. 3 Wednesday ..33 5 8 4 11 Year ago 11 3 1 g Sess'ti to date.14S.w4 223:! 22SH I486 2344 Year ago 132H7 l'.IUO 19(5 lliso 1751 cointry rnonccK markets- weak Recent High Prices Cause Increase In Receipt. The country produce market .vas weak all around yesterday. The recent high prices have brought in larger supplies of poul try and meats, and the former quotations imc not now obtainable. Hens sold yester day at 1Si cents, and vea! did not bring ver 13H to 14 cents. Even pork waa easier, with the nest going at 11 cents. Kfiss still sold in small lots at 19 cents, eat It was generally considered an 18s rent market. This was lite best price tiie Sound would orfer and storage speculators bid the same price. There were no new developments in the butter or caeere markets. ONION" SCARCITY WIEI, BE RELIEVED One Thousand Crates In Bond Are on Meaner Use Today. The San Francisco steamer due today will bring a shipment of 10OO crates of Aus tralian onions In bond. This will serve to relieve the local scarcity, owing to the clos ing of the Oregon season. The steamer will also have about eight cars of oranges. Nine cars of bananas, the first received this season by the northern route, were delivered yesterday In good condition. A few small lots of Florin strawberries arrived and cleaned up at (4 a crate. Most vegetables were firm, especially as paragus and peas, which were strong in the south. Mohair Arrivals Are Small. Mohair is coming along in a small way. Local dealers are paying 20 and 27 cents. They all assert these prices are too high, but growers take a bullish view of the mar ket and are not offering freely. SETTLERS AWAIT DECISION Homesteaders Around Sheridan Have Appealed to Land Commissioner. SHERIDAN. Or.. April 1. (Special.) Sixty or seventy settlers in township 12 south, ranpe 4 east, are anxiously awaiting: a decision of the Commis sioner of the General -Land Office in volving their rixhtx to receive patent for the lands held by them. Although the land has been in controversy for several years the settlers have re ligiously complied -with the homestead laws. Back in 1899 the Northern Pacific Railway Company laid scrip upon this township, the same being unsurveyed at that time. On the day the plat was filed by the railway company the set tlers presented their homestead appli cations at the local office accompanied by their affidavits of settlement upon the land dating buck prior to the ac tual survey in the field. The local of fice rejected the applications because the railway company had applied for the land in lieu of land within the Rainier National Forest in November. 189?. The settlers thereupon appealed to the Commissioner of the General Land Office. A former Secretary of the Interior in a case similar to the present one decided some four or five years ago that scrip laid upon unsur veyed land was without prejudice to the rights of bona fide settlers whose settlement began prior to the actual survey in the Held. GOULDS ARE STRONG Stocks in Demand Because of Rockefeller Rumor. EXPORTS HELP COPPERS Movements in Remainder of I.Ut Arc Narrow Poor Showings Made by . Eastern Roads Bonds Are Well Held. XEW YORK. April 1. Price movements today were narrow. News from Washing ton that the Interstate Commerce Com mission's decision in the freight rates case would he rendered sooner than had been expected, and possibly within a month, caused a brief rise In the railroad list, but tha effect was lessened by the poor show ing of the largest Eastern railroads for February. New York Central's decrease of S3. 343,000 in operating revenues for Feb ruary and Pennsylvania's shrinkage In op erating Income of I2.l,000. were em phatic reminders of the present position of the railroads. Gould stocks were strong and active on reiteration of the reports circulated yester day that Rockefeller Interests would take over holdings or Northern Pacific. Coppers derived some benefit from the export figures Tor February, showing record foreign shipments of the metal. Railroad bonds were well held, except Rock Island collaterals, which fell 114 to '"4. a new low record. Total sales, par ..vw,vuu. unitea states bonds Were unchanged on calL CLOSLNQ STOCK QUOTATIONS.
