THE MORNING OREGOXIAN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4, 1914. 19 SOUTH BIDS MORE California Again in Market for Wheat. HELPS NORTHERN PRICES J5upnl.es Kruiaininir in Oregon uud AYushington Arc in Strong Hands and Sales Are Only Made at Advances. The California wheat market has taken a turu for the better. and with prices firm ing up there, the buyers are willing to bid more for supplies in the north. It was known they would come to this sooner or later, but the demand has picked up rather earlier than expected. It Is practically certain that shiments to Ran Francisco and San Pedro will be as large this month as in February and the movement in April may be etill larger. There was a good California demand on the market yesterday for prompt shipment. With available stocks In the Northwest mo small and California coming in, wheat holders naturally are bullish and demand extreme prices. Quotations as given in the local market yesterday were unchanged at 'flora 91 cents for club, but it is known that dealers made sales at better prices. A little business has been done locally in bluestem at fl, and red Russian was held firmly at 0 cents. There has been practically no selling by farmers since they paid their taxes and there is not likely to be much for the next SO days. Where farmers are offering wheat, It is with the added charges. Farmers' wheat is about eliminated now as a market factor, as the bulk of the supply left is in second hands, which makes the market a local proposition. As the grain is all in atrong hands,' there is not much chance of buyers meeting with concessions anywhere along the line. The only demand at the moment is from the south. Millers are inactive as buyers and there Is no export call. The California situation, however, is strong enough to keep the market In good shape. Local receipts. In cars, were reported by the Merchants Exchange as follows: Wheat Barley Flour Oats Hay Monday 1 3i lit 21 1 1 :; Tuesday 74 1 15 1 h Year ago il .. 4 ti ll Scas'n to date.l40ttu 1! The new rate of duty on sugar, which vent into effect or March 1, caused no changes in Pacific Coast markets, as the change was discounted by declines which took place some time ago. The Eastern markets are also adjusted to the revised tariff, and further changes are not expected there, according to the following- wire, received yesterday; "Heavy withdrawals from bonded ware bouses of raw sugar were made yesterday t New York, as the result of the -5 per cent cut in duties provided for in the tariff act of 101:;. effective March J. Several refiner ies In this city and in Yonkers have resumed full time, after a long period of partial op eration. It was said today that the tariff reduction had been discounted, and prob ably would trause no further decline in the price of refined sugar." fcPfcX'L LATOK8 AKK NOW BUYING EGGS Operations Believed to Be for Storage Ac count. There were shipping orders for egs on the market yesterday, also active buying for speculative account, presumed to be tor storage purposes. .Sales were made in a Jobbing way'at 21 cents. A few Front-street dealers turned their stocks to other deal ers at 20 cents and 20 cents; at the same time, large buyers sent 1. o. b. offers to the country of 20 and 20 cents, which result ed In smaller shipments to commisslon iiouses. Poultry receipts were small and the mar ket was firm for all kinds. Large hens sold at IS cents. There is a good demand for broilers, but dealers are unable to get supplies either in the valley or in Cali fornia. The trade in dressed meats was slow, but receipts were limited and this kept prices firm. . No changes were made - in the butter market. SMALL ORANGE SUPPLY IN SIGHT Vegetable Receipt for Way Are Light Po tato Trade Dull. The steamer In last night brought a mod erate shipment of oranges, 10 cars, some of them in transit for other points, and as the next steamer will have a still smaller quan tity, a -continued firm marxet Is In sight. Ripe bananas were practically cleaned up yesterday. Tha next shipment is due Thursday. - Vegetable receipts were light, consisting of one -car of lettuce and a small assort ment of miscellaneous truck on the steamer. Lettuce was firm at $2.50 and will be scarce until the latter part of the week. No ex press shipments of asparagus came in. Rhubarb shipments . In car lots will be started north from California next week. The potato market has flattened out. Shippers are without orders now from any quarter. Nominal quotations at country point3 are 50 to 65 cents. New Canning; Procewg Tried. A process of canning fruit that is expect ed to revolutionize the canning industry is being developed with the backing of Colum hus. O., capital at a plant in Urbuiia, O, An experimental run just made with apples is said to have resulted successfully. The fruit was canned In the raw state and it is proposed to deliver it to the customer prac tically as fresh as when gathered. Bacteria Is destroyed by a steam process and can ning is done under conditions of steriliza tion which are said to prevent deterioration. Batik Clearing. The elope was weak. foic to 5isC under last night. Corn finished sjtc to 'iC down, oats off '(Sic and pro visions varying from a shade decline to at advance of 5c. Wheat prices at first were inclined to advance, owing to higher cables and be cause of continued complaints of Winter killing, chiefly at places in Missouri and Kansas. Support gave out, however, and the market had a sharp setback after one of the best-informed authorities In the trade went on record with a statement that Win ter wheat, as a whole, has improved In con dition two points since December 1. and that Wisconsin and Iowa were the only ex ceptions to an all-around gain. It was es timated that farm reserves were 4,000,000 bushels larger than a year ago. Corn suffered a bearish reaction as a result ol .the break In wheat, and oats swayed with-. corn. A falling off in the visible supply was apparently ignored In provijions. the large stocks here were offset by the fact that hog receipts turned out unexpectedly small. Besides. the world's supply of lard failed to gain at the rate equal .to that of the corresponding time a year ago. The leading futures ranged as follows: WHEAT. Qjen. t .!' . .80 H High. Low. Close.
