TIIE MORNING OREGONIAN, TUESDAY, JANUARY 27, 1914. 11 4 ) JUDGE BENNETT TO 1 Jurist of The Dalles Enters Race to Head Democratic State Ticket. PUBLISHED ATTACK CAUSE Tromlneiit Political leader Resents Letter Impugning Motives In Opposing Mr. West and He Makes Announcement. Judge A. S. Bennett, of The Dalles, yesterday announced his aspiration for the Democratic nomination for Gov ernor. The political ring? is now cluttered, o to speak, with four Democrats, five Republicans, one Progressive and one ludgre A. S. Bennett, of The Dalles, AVbo Announces Candi dacy for Democratic domina tion for Governor. Independent - Republican - Progresslve-SinR-le Taxer. Nor is this the end, for at least one other, and perhaps several others, are awaiting propitious turns of events before Joining the struggle. .Tudgo Bennett is one of the best known Democrats In Oregon. He has lived In this state since 1865, coming here with his parents In that year from Iowa and Bettllng In Yamhill County. He was admitted to the Oregon bar in 1880. From 1SS4 to 1886 he was a law partner of Frank Paxton in Portland. In 18S2 he was elected to the lower house of the state Legislature and later was appointed a Circuit Judge. In a letter to a Portland Democratic evening newspaper announcing his randidacy, Judge Bennett asserted that he had been forced Into the race by insinuations in a letter pre. yiously published In that paper, signed 4 A Democrat,"- which impugned his motives in opposing Oswald West when the latter was a candidate at the Democratic primary in 1910 for the nomination for Governor. "I had not concluded to be a candi date, and might never have been one but for the publication of this letter," Faid Judge Bennett in part In his letter. "The fact that the letter is based upon the assumption that I am un worthy of aspiring to any Democratic lionor because of my opposition to Governor West four years ago, to gether with the fact that I had tacitly permitted my friends to mention me as it possible candidate, puts it up to me, as I view it, and leaves me no honor able alternative (no alternative that does not seem cowardly) but to an nounce, as I now do, that from this time on until the polls for the pri mary close, I am and shall be a can didate for the nomination." PENSIONS GIVgM TO WIDOWS Increases Are Allowed In Cases of Two Applicants. Tensions for widows and Increases were allowed yesterday as follows: Mrs. Marie .Shafer, 1239 East Eigh teenth street North, $25; Mrs. Edith N. Deal, St. Johns, $10; Mrs. Maggie Barnes, 5218 Sixty-second avenue Southeast, $25; Mrs. Cora Cuneo, 643 Clinton street, $32.50; Mrs. Mary E. Davis, Luther Station, $25; Mrs. Eliza beth Ewing, 290 V4 Sixteenth street North, pension raised from $10.50 to $17.50, and Mrs. Ilattie Weaver, 248 Thirteenth street, pension raised from $17.50 to $25 on condition that she move from her present home into bet ter quarters.
