STEAMER IS LAUNCHED Transportation Company's Cralt Takes Water as Captain HosTord Expected Amid Best Wishes of All Aboard. "I christen the Anna TV," fcravely tittered little eip-ht-year-old Anne Wentworth at 8 o'clock yesterday after noon, as she leaned as far over the Bide of the new propeller built for the Hosford Transportation Company as her childish reach would, permit and smashed a bottle of champagne into a foamy stream as the steamer began her glide down the ways at the yard f the Portland Shipbuilding Company. The sponsor of the Anne W. Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd J. Wentworth, and, she stood on the bow tt her namesake In fine disregard of the rainy downpour and rode down the ways into deep water. Mr. 'Went worth is manager of the Portland Lum ber Company and was persuaded by Captain O. "W.- Hosford to have his daughter name the steamer, which la expected to tow many logs to the mill Jrom the lower Tlver during her ca reer. Aboard the Anne W. when she took the water were Captain Hosford. Mr. Bnd Mrs. Lloyd J. "Wentworth and Anne, Imogen and Janet Wentworth. Mr. and Mrs. O. K. Wentworth, Jr., with Mar garet Wentworth: Mr. and Mrs. Olln J. Hosford, Mrs. Sarah Long, Mrs. J. C. Kluckner, Miss Louise Fisher, L. C. VJosford and Jack Selby. The steamer's ..hull is of the tunnel lype and a aoo-horsepower engine -wUl Hrlva a fiS.lnch nrnnflllr. It belnCT PX - fected that she will make 15 miles. I KVie s a. enctVt ot 100 teeA, oeam ot 21.8 feet and with 92 barrels of fuel oil aboard Is to have a draft of five feet. The steamer was designed for epecfal work in towing and assisting the larger vessels of the Hosford fleet In handling log rafts, particularly for work In Grays River, where conditions frequently prevent the navigation of the regular steamers. In appearance she Is of the general tug type, her pilot-house being above the cabin. The latter boasts of a Salon forward and has two staterooms on each side, one being reserved for the owner. A roomy galley extends across the vessel and she has plenty of space on deck and below. A towing machine Is located aft of the house. It is In tended to have her ready for service in 10 days or two weeks. Being the pet of Captain Hosford. there Is reason to believe that her furnishings will be far ahead of the average tug outfit. COLUSA LEAVES T3TE3 HARBOR Current Makes Hard Work of Mot- ing West Coast Liner. Captain "Jim" Smith, of the Columbia River pilots, appeared before a large audience on the river yesterday after noon regardless cf stormy weather. when he undertook to pilot the big Grace liner Colusa from the Portland' mill through the bridges, & task that required more than two hours. Owing to the swift current the steamers Ock lahama and Cascades were made fast to the bow of the Colusa and she was backed down stream, using her own power at times. In passing through the Morrison-street and Burnslde etreet bridges it looked like a close shave, and again above the Broadway bridge, when a runaway barge carrying a donkey engine narrowly missed the sterns of the river steamers, there were sighs of relief when the vessels were swung so as to escape the floating menace. Bridges, docks and "waterfront offices were thronged as the big freighter moved slowly through the harbor. She loaded 1,088, 863 feet of lumber worth $13,918, box shooks worth $200 and 150 piling valued at $1020 here. She had taken on considerable freight on Puget Sound and loads more at San Francisco, so will make calls at the principal ports from Balboa to Val paraiso on the west coast. Most of her passenger accommodations will be oc cupied leaving the Golden Gate. BANKOKU MARC GOES NORTH Japanese Tramp Most Return, to Portland to Load for Orient. When the Japanese steamer Bankoku Maru, bound here from San Francisco, was reported arriving -at Port Angeles yesterday some mariners opined that the skipper had been given such strong Assistance by . the. southerly weather that he could not stop to head into the river. Instead he wired later that his vessel, was off the entrance from early Saturday until Monday afternoon, and assuming that he could not make it In side he headed lor shelter to the north. The steamer has been ordered here to load. She Is under engagement to Balfour. Guthrie & Co., and will be dispatched .. for Japan with about 9000 tons of cargo. The Japanese steamer Kenkon Maru was due to leave Kalama last night for the lower harbor and there await her chance to put out. She goes to China for the Robert Dol lar Company. -The Japanese steamer Tenpaison Maru arrived In the harbor yesterday from Milkl, she having crossed into the river Monday when the Bankoku Maru headed for Port Angeles. The Tenpaison Maru has started loading flour at the Crown mill for Japan. STEAMER, BEAR. TO SAIL TODAY Series of Southerly Gales Which Have Been Sweeping Coast End. ASTORIA, Or., Jan. 6. (Special.)- The series of southerly gales which have been sweeping along the coast during the past five or six days are apparently at an end. Reports from the mouth 6f the river today were that only a light breeze was blowing, but the bar was envel oped by a thick veil of fog and mist and not a one of the weather-bound fleet lying in the lower harbor at tempted to cross out. The steamer Bear, which has been In the harbor since last Thursday night, came to her dock this afternoon to secure addi tional provisions and she expects to sail at high tide tomorrow morning. DAMAGE TO JETTY PROBABLE Storm May Have Helped to Settle "Apron" Into Place at End. Fully expecting that the present Ftorm has left Its Imprint on the aban doned trestle of the south Jetty at the mouth of the river, and probably cre ated a disturbance that caused the en rockment at the other end to settle more, Gerald Bagnall, assistant en gineer in the office of Colonel McKin stry. Corps of Engineers, U. S. A., is planning a. trip by steamer, as soon as conditions permit, to Inspect the prop erty.
