BUTTER AT AUCTION First Regular Bid Sale Held in This City. -rST" CUBES IS SOLD Creamer; Men Kegard It a.- Kirst Step Toward Formation or Much-N'eeded Dairy Prod nce Exchange. The first regular butter auction In this ottx was held yesterday. This the. cream ery men hope marks the beginning of a j.ermanent dairy produce exchange for Port' Tha sale was held at 11 A. M. at the office of the North-went Butter & Produce Company, on North Fifth street. It was attended by representatives of ST cream erie. Including every creamery in this city except two. One hundred and thirty-two cubes of butter were offered for sale to the highest bidder, and after a period of spirited bidding all were disposed of. The highest price offered was 33 cents. Other sales were made at 31 cents. It Is the Intention to hold a sale each morning at 11 o'clock. The butter will be subject to Inspection before the exchange opens, and all transactions will be posted a blackboard. Later formal steps will be taken to organise the exchange. Everyone connected with the butter busi ness of the Northwest will appreciate the Importance of this undertaking. Heretofore tlie market has been a more or less uncer tain affair with many conflicting Interests. Prices were frequently named to suit the purpose of the price makers and had little bearing on supply and demand conditions. With an open public market local values can be established on a proper level, based on actual demand and supply. Cream pro ducers, as well as butter makers, will be benefited by the arrangement. IMPROVEMENT IN MOHAIR M- RKET Condition Sounder Than Rome Factors Would Make It Appear. There has been some quiet buying of mohair In the past few days at ! cents. Not much ia left In the state, but there ap pears to be a demand for it. The Eastern msrket Is firmer, and there Is Inquiry for short hair, but none of this is available here, as the Oregon growers shear only once a year. Commenting on conditions in the East and abroad the Boston Commercial Bulletin says: "There has been a small trade in domes tic carding mohair In the Boston market this week on the basla of prices ruling a week ago. No further sales are reported In the Southwest as yet. "In English centers there appears to be little news worthy of note, except for a report that an order baa recently been placed on American account for some stuff suods made of lustre and deml-lustre yarns. The yarn spinners are now fairly occupied, although they contend that no new orders of consequence are coming forward. Trade in tho raw material appears to be more or less of the hand-to-mouth description, but It Is believed that conditions are sounder under the surface than many factors would like to have It generally believed. "Advices from Constantinople recently In dicate a slightly better trade, although buslnes has been far from active. Some fine hair .was recently sold In that market on the basis of 17H tt II Xd. Some demand Is reported at con suming centers for mixed Cape hairs In cluding Winter and Basuto at steady rates." WHEAT IS BOUGHT AT EASIER PRICES Purrhases Made at Cent fader Bids at rreceding Day. There was some buying of wheat yester day at prk-es a cent less than were offered in the country on the preceding day. Sev eral dealers reported more disposition on the part of farmers to aelL They believe holders realise there may be a quiet time until the first of year. Demand Front Railroads tor Equipment Material Is Broadening; and Pricea Are Firmer. NEW YORK, Dec. 19. Dun's review will say tomorrow: With the approach of the annual Inven tory period, a general slowing down of busi ness is to be expected, yet more than aea sonable quietness now prevails both In com mercial and industrial channels. Christmas sales compare talrly well with those of a year ago, although the activity is not general. Although the running schedule of steel mills la likely to be reduced before the year end, producers seem to be more confident as to the outlook. Demand from the railroads is broadening and there has recently been sorao large buying of pig iron; hence, the situation appears more encouraging and producers are less inclined to grant price concessions. Tho final Government estimates of agri cultural results this year Indicate that a vast amount of new wealth has been created by tho soli, notwithstanding the decline In the yield of some crops; higher prices more than offset the loss In production. Failures this week numbered 416 In the T'nlted States against S53 last year and 35 m Canada, compared with 47 a year ago. Retail and Holiday Trade Large. NEW YORK. Deo. 18. Bradstreefs wih say tomorrow: Retail and holiday business holds the cen ter of the stage, while wholeaale trade and industry tend to quiet down. Salesmen are in from the road, inventories will soon de mand attention and jobbing trade, affected by backward demand at retail, caused by prolonged mild weather, ia slackening. Fi nal distribution Is Irregular In volume, being helped by holiday spirit In buying, but find ing drawbacks in the mild weather. Outdoor activities are naturally slacken ing, and the aggregate total of Idle hands Is larger than at any prevloua date this year, but In some Instances pessimism seems to hav outrun actuality, and something like a reaction from the blue-tinged type of reports Is In evidence In a few lines. There is a rather better feeling, for Instance.' In some branches of the Iron trade, and pig iron sales are larger. BmnlM failures for the week were 378. whi-h compares with S33 In 1912. Wheat. STOCK TRADE BGDhiS Advances of Two to Four Points Are Scored. MARKET STRONG ALL DAY Wall Street Has Not for Weeks Seen Such Striking Evidence of In herent Strength Bonds Are -Also Firm. NEW YORK, Dec 19. From opening to close today's stock market exhibited decided strength. The sustained advance in share of ail classes railroad and industrial, in vestment and speculative impressed both bulls and bears and there was increased buying for both accounts. Not for weeks had the street seen a mar ket which gave auch striking evidence of inherent strength.- 51any of the representa tive shares were marked up two to four points. While there are many different opinions in Wall street as to the ultimate effect of the changes to be made because of the cur rency bill, the - trading element took the view that passage of the bill would be a distinctly bullish influence. Recent changes in the bill were construed aa favorable. An unofficial report from Washington that the Interstate Commerce Commission was disposed to regard favorably the peti tion of the Eastern roads for higher freight ratea helped to strengthen railroad stocks. Success of the Lehigh Vailey bond offering was another influence in that direction. Another favorable b&nk statement was Indicated. Forecasts, oased on known movements of currency during the week suggested a gain of (7,000,000 or more in casn noiaings. Bonds ghared In the strength of the mar ket for stocks. Wabash-Pittsburg certifi cates slumped five points to 10. Total sales. par value, (2,000,000, United states 2s ad vanced Vt on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Reported by J. C. WHEAT UP HALF CENT Smallness of Reserves At tracts Attention. BULLS AGAIN TAKE CHARGE Stocks in First Hands in Xorthwest Much tighter Than Year Ago. rrimary Arrivals Also Show Decrease.' CHICAGO. Dec. 19. Returning confidence on tho part of wheat bulls showed itself today as a result of attention being di rected to the smallness of reserves on farms in the Dakotas and Minnesota. The mar ket closed firm, c to Vic above last night Corn finished irregular, , i.c off to a like advance, oats with a gain of Ho to V4 9ic and provkdons varying from 2Vs5c decline' to a rise of 7ic . . It was urged that any scarcity of wheat supplies would probably be in the Northwest and that the relativo mcagerness of stocks in first hands, compared with a year ago, had become too conspicuous to be Ignored. Primary receipts wero nearly . 700,000 bushels under , those of lost year and added to sentiment in favor of tho bull side in wheat and so also did the lack of snow covering in the Winter crop belt. On the other hand, especially during the early part of the season, mild weather and weak ca bles gave at times the advantage to the bears. There waa also a revival of gossip that the Canadian duty would be with drawn, . Corn suffered from selling pressure, .due to continued big receipts at tho chief ter minal points. In oats knowledge of plentiful resting or ders to buy at any decline made prices firm from the start. ' Provisions ruled steady.
